Chapter 12: House of Cheats & House of Rumors.

Dinner had just finished but I didn't feel like hanging around the living room with Fabian acting weird and a big French test coming up my mind was already swimming and I needed a little peace and quiet. Besides, everyone was busy doing something. Jerome and Alfie were wrestling on the floor knocking everything over, Patricia was relaxing on the couch watching the two boys, Nina sat across from her reading a book, Mara was cleaning up the table since it was her turn for chores though I could have sworn it was Jerome's and Mick was doing pushups off a chair while Amber stood by counting them.

Standing up from the table I attempted to leave the room but was nearly knocked over when Alfie accidently rammed into my leg. After giving them a good yell I finally walked out of the room. I start to wonder where Fabian is because didn't show up for dinner and I was beginning to get worried. The moment I stepped onto the stair case the door opened revealing none other than my brother Fabian. His arms were full of books and he was horribly attempting to shut the door with his foot. I shake my head laughing as I went over to help him but he tripped causing him, me and the books to fall to the floor.

"Nice one Fabian." I tease sitting up.

"Sorry." He replies sheepishly as he stands up and helps me to my feet.

I chuckle. "Thanks and it's okay but is there a reason you look like you checked out the entire section of Library books on Egypt?"

He laughs. "Mine and Nina's project remember?"

"Oh yeah," I nod as we began to pick up the books of the floor. Fabian reached for one near the staircase when he paused looking up at the banisters. I watch him confused as he walks over to it and places his hand on one of the beams.

"The eye." He whispers grinning.

"The what?" I ask completely confused.

"Huh? Oh um, the banister sort of looks like an eye….doesn't it?" Fabian nervously replies pointing to the staircase. I look at the banister and surprisingly it did look a lot like an eye.

I nod, "You're right, it does. How odd."

It seemed as if my answer made him more nervous because his face grew pale. It was as if he accidently told me the answers to a test. "Yeah, um I have to go….do something. Thanks for helping pick up the books, I can get the rest." He starts toward the living room door but before I can fully question him he replies. "I'll explain later."

He was out the door before I could say anything else. I let out a long sigh and continue my earlier path up to my room wondering when he'll actually explain things.

A loud squeal echoed throughout the house. I gasp sitting straight up in bed hearing the sound. What the heck was that? I hear a clicking noise and look over to see Amber turning on the lights.

"What was that?" I ask frightened.

"I don't know." She says sitting back on her bed sounding just as scared as she was. "But it sounded creepy."

I nod glancing about the room and notice Nina's bed is empty.

"Where's Nina?" I ask.

Amber gives me a confused stare then looks at Nina's bed and gasps. "Maybe she snuck out with Fabian again!"

I frown, "What are they up to?"

Amber shrugs, "Who knows, ooh what if they are on the secret date!"

I roll my eyes, "Don't you think we'd know if they were dating?"

"You may never know." She smiles.

I laugh, "Well we should-"I pause hearing muffled voices outside the door. "Do hear that? It sounds like Fabian and Nina."

"Yes, what are they saying?" Amber asks quietly.

"I don't know." I say getting up and walking to the door. Amber follows me and we quietly stand near it listening in to Fabian and Nina's conversation.

"My heart is still pounding." I hear Nina say.

Fabian laughs. "Mine too."

Nina sighs. "I hope I can sleep… who am I kidding, I may never sleep again."

"Same." Fabian whispers.

"I can't believe we got away with it." Nina says. Amber and I glance eat each other in confusion then back to the door.

"Night." Fabian tells Nina. I notice the doorknob twist and pull Amber away from the door knowing Nina was about to open it.

"Can't believe you got away with that?" Amber asks as soon as Nina walks in.

"What! No. Nothing, nothing at all." She quickly replies closing the door and sitting on her bed.

"Sneaking around with Fabian in the middle of the night, your hearts beating really fast and you think you've got away with something…" Amber gasps and sits beside Nina. "I was right! You were having a secret date!"

Nina's eyes widen. "No! Not exactly…."

"This is so exciting. You, me, Mick, Fabian, Double dates….I can see all ready! I can't wait to tell everyone!" Amber replies excitedly cutting off Nina.

"No! None one. You tell no one, the both you of you. Promise?" She says looking between Amber and I. So, is that what Fabian wouldn't tell me? That he's dating Nina? Why would he hide that from me though?

"Oh, I get it. Secret love, so romantic." Amber says moving to her bed. "You're secrets safe with me."

I look at her confused. "Wait, so is that what you and Fabian have been hiding? That you're dating?"

"Um, sort of. Just promise you won't say anything! Please!" She answers nervously.

Sort of? What does that mean? I sigh, and decide to drop it, for now at least. It was almost one in the morning and I was exhausted so I didn't really feel like thinking about it, but I had a feeling something else was going on.

"Don't worry, I won't say anything." I promise smiling. "Now, I don't know about you two but I'm exhausted. I'm going back to bed. Night."

"Night." Nina and Amber say as I lay back in bed and wrap my blanket around me. I was definitely talking to Fabian tomorrow; he had some serious explaining to do.

"Fabian James Rutter!" I practically shout walking up to my brother at school the next morning. I would have confronted him at the house but I didn't want to mention anything around the others. It was supposed to be a secret, apparently, after all. He was at his locker putting some books in his school bag and I nearly laughed when he jumped and turned to face me his eyes wide.

"Uh…hi Anna…so, how are you?" He greets nervously

I roll my eyes. "Nice try. Are you and Nina dating?"

"Um…well….not exactly." He replies nervously.

"That's what Nina said, but I have no clue what that means. So tell me the truth. Are you or aren't you?" I ask again arms folded.

"What is this? An interrogation?" He teases raising his eyebrows.

I sigh. "Sorry, but you two have been so secretive lately and neither of you will say why then Amber was going off about-"

"I know, Nina told me." Fabian says cutting me off with a mixture of annoyance and sadness in his voice. "We aren't dating and before you ask I can't tell you what we were doing last night."

"Ugh fine." I groan in annoyance. I notice Fabian's facial expression drop and frown. "What's wrong Fabian?"

He shrugs. "Nothing."

I stare at him a long moment before a wide grin forms on my face. "Aww, you like Nina! I knew it!"

His eyes widen. "What! No I…is it that obvious?"

I giggle. "A bit, yeah."

He sighs. "Great. If only Nina didn't think us dating was ridiculous."

"What?" I ask in shock.

"Amber told Mick that we were dating, so I went to talk to Nina about it and she told me it was ridiculous." Fabian explains. Figures Amber would tell someone even after Nina said not to.

"Aw, don't worry Fabes." I tell him, knowing Nina had a crush on him. "She probably only said that because she was nervous, besides you two would make such a cute couple."

"You think?" he asks.

Anna nods. "Of course. Now come on we have to get class."

"Alright." He says closing his locker with a smile on his face. I laugh and the two of us went to our next class: Drama.

As Fabian and I arrived in the Drama room I noticed Jerome, Alfie, and Patricia standing by the window talking. Patricia looked worried while the boys looked a little confused. It made me think of that weird scream last night. I wonder what it was.

"Fabian, did you hear that weird screeching sound last night?" I ask deciding to voice my thoughts.

He face pales a bit, but he shakes his head. "N-no. I didn't hear anything."

I raise my eyebrows. "Please, the whole house heard it, you must've heard something and don't say you were sleeping because we both know you weren't."

"Umm…alright I heard it but it was probably nothing." He replies quickly.

"You're lying again, Fabian." I frown. "I know because you're face turned white as a sheet when I mentioned the noise and we're twins, I can always tell. I'm guessing it has to do with whatever you can't tell me. Right?"

He sighs. "Sort of. I'm sorry Annie."

"I know." I reply. "It's okay."

It really wasn't. I still didn't like that he was keeping something from me but I felt like he had a good reason, so I decided to leave it alone…for now anyway. We were supposed to go in pairs for the class activity, Mr. Winkler told us earlier, so I pair up with Fabian. After a few minutes Mr. Winkler turned to Patricia, Alfie and Jerome, who were still talking, and told them to get into pairs. Patricia and Alfie pair together while Jerome walks over to Mara, a smirk on his face. I frown as I watch him turn to her the grin never leaving his face. Mara just rolls her eyes. Why is Jerome pairing up with Mara? And why is he looking at her like that?

"Three little words…" Mr. Winkler says breaking me from my thoughts. "I love you. See it's not what you say; it's how you say it. In your pairs I want you to tell a story but you can only have a conversation with those three words. I love you. Okay?"

"You're still mad at me aren't you?" Fabian says turning to me as the class began to do the activity.

I shake my head. "No, of course not. It's just…"

"You don't like the fact that I've been keeping something from you." Fabian finishes with a sigh.

I nod, "Yeah, but I trust you. I know you have a good reason, it's just hard I guess."

"I know, I would feel the same if it was the other way around." He tells me.

I give him a look, "Then why are you letting me go through it?"

"If you were in my shoes, you would do the same thing." He says placing a hand on my shoulder. "I'm only doing this because I love you, Anna."

I laugh. "Aw, I love you too Fabian."

He laughs too and pulls me into a hug which I return.

"Very good, Fabian and Anna! You can really see the sibling relationship you both have." Mr. Winkler smiles at us as we break from the hug.

"Oh, thank you." We say simultaneously. He nods.

I glance at Jerome as he hands Mara a piece of paper.

"I love you." He says a huge grin on his face.

She glares at him. "I love you."

"Mara and Jerome. Great acting, yeah?" Mr. Winkler says turning to them. "Yeah, I can almost feel the hatred."

I couldn't help but feel annoyed. What is going on with them?

"Somebody's jealous." Fabian smirks.

"What! No, I'm not!" I exclaim. "I am just wondering why Jerome is…" I trail off seeing Fabian bust up laughing. I hit his arm blushing bright red. "Oh shut up."

"Did anyone see that?" Patricia shouts fearfully before he could reply.

"What?" Mr. Winkler asks as everyone turns to her.

"That man! He was staring at me." She replies pointing out the window. Everyone gathers behind her trying to get a glimpse of what she saw but nothing was there, just a bunch of trees. Patricia seems to notice this too and frowns. "I saw him. I did."

Fabian and I glance at each other wondering the same thing. Did she really see someone? And if she did who did she see and why was he watching her?

"Are you and Fabian still fighting?" Amber asks as she reapplies her make up in the bathroom mirror. It was lunch and the both of us got out of class early, so Amber pulled me into the girls bathroom because she wanted to talk to me about something. What that was I wasn't sure.

I lean against the counter. "No, but he still won't tell me about what he's hiding. He told me that if I were in his shoes I would do the same. What does that mean? He makes it seem like he's keeping some dangerous secret or something."

"That's what I wanted to talk to you about." She says turning to face me. "Fabian and Nina are definitely up to something."

"No, ya think?" I reply sarcastically.

She rolls her eyes. "Point is, we need to figure out what."

"But Amber, what if there not telling anyone for a reason. We can't just force them to tell us what's going on." I tell her.

Amber sighs but before she couldn't reply the bathroom door opens. Amber gasps and pulls me into one of the stalls.

"Amber what-"

"Shh!"

I hear someone walk into the stall beside us and close the door. It's quiet for a moment before the person starts to speak.

"What are you hiding?" It was Nina, but what was she talking about?

Amber pulls out her phone and stands on the toilet looking over into Nina's stall.

"Yes, what are you hiding?" Amber questions as I sneak into the stall on the other side of Nina's and stand on the toilet looking down at her.

"Please do tell." I say seeing she was holding a book on Egyptian hieroglyphics and holding a strange golden object with hieroglyphics on it.

Amber snaps a picture of Nina. "Tell us, or I'll go to Mr. Sweet and tell him you're doing something weird and I don't know what it is…or something."

I give Amber a look but she just shrugs and continues to stare at Nina, waiting for her answer.

"Okay, but you tell no one." Nina says looking between us both.

"I won't promise." I tell her.

Amber nods. "I'll take to the grave. I never tell a secret." Nina glances at her unsure.

I give Amber another look. "Yes you do, you told Mick about-"

"That's not the point Anna." Amber cuts me off rolling her eyes as the three of us move from our separate stalls to beside the sink. "So, what are you and Fabian hiding?"

Nina glances around as if making sure no was listening then turns back to us and sighs.

"Remember Sarah? That old woman I helped a few weeks ago?" She asks. We nod. "Well she gave me this locket and told me she used to live at the Anubis House and that there is a treasure hidden it." She shows us her locket which was shaped like an eye…wait a minute…

"The Eye of Horus!" I exclaim.

"What?" Amber and Nina ask confused.

"The other day Fabian was looking at the staircase in the house and said that the banister looked like eyes. He must have been thinking of your locket." I explain.

She nods, "Yeah, that's how we found this." She holds up the golden object. "It's a puzzle piece, and somehow it will give us the clue to the next one."

"Wait, wait. Puzzle pieces, clues, treasure? Why is this sounding like Indiana Jones…or Scooby Doo? How do you know this is all real?" I ask unsure. This whole thing just sounded bizarre, it was like something you would read in a book or watch in a movie. Besides, how can there be treasure in the house?

"Because…well maybe I should just explain everything." Nina tells them. "Except why don't we get lunch first I'm starving."

Amber and I agree. I was pretty hungry myself now that I thought about it. We grabbed our bags from the counter and walked to the cafeteria. After getting lunch we found a spot outside that was as far from the school as we could go and as we ate Nina explained what happened since she had met Sarah. Once Nina was given the necklace Her and Fabian have been searching the house for clues to the treasure but that wasn't all. Sarah had told her that there was evil in the house and to beware the black bird, which lead to her earlier nightmare. Nina even told them about a hidden room in the attic that only her attic can unlock where she and Fabian found the first clue. When she had finished explaining the story, the clues and pretty much everything I was sure my mouth was hanging from shock. I'm sure Amber was shocked as well. It was a lot to take in but there was one thing that kept entering my mind. Fabian was really trying to protect me, he knew what they were doing was risky and that's why he didn't want be involved. Everything started to click in place and now I just feel really guilty...

"Fabian?" I ask knocking on his and Micks bedroom door. I've wanted to talk to Fabian about this whole mystery thing since Nina had told Amber and me about it, but I haven't been able to talk to him since we've been busy with classes all day. I decided once I finished my homework I would talk to him. I really want to apologize for how angry I was before and how rude I acted. I felt just horrible about it.

I stood outside the door for almost a minute before I heard him answer telling me to come in. I did as I was told and smirked when I saw Fabian and Nina standing rather closely together.

"Sorry, was I interrupting something?"

"No!" They both shouted their faces bright red.

"We…we're just talking but, I'm going to go so I'll see you both later." Nina explains quickly before running out of the room.

I laugh. "Well that wasn't suspicious at all."

"We were really just talking." Fabian replies quietly a serious expression on his face. "She told me what happened and how she explained everything to you and Amber about the mystery."

"It really wasn't her fault. Amber and I sort of ambushed her." I say giving him a sheepish smile to which he rolled his eyes. "But we promised not to tell anyone and I meant it…I'm sure Amber did too, I hope."

He chuckles but nods, "I know…"

It was quiet for a moment before we both turned to each other and blurted. "I'm sorry."

"You are? For what?" We asked each other simultaneously causing us to laugh.

"Look," I began after we calmed, the both of us now sitting on his bed. "I get why you were hiding this from me…you were protecting me and you were right I would have done the same." He smiled at me as if to say 'Told you.' I smiled back giving him a playful shove then frowned. "I'm sorry for the way I acted. I feel horrible. I mean here you are trying to be a good brother and I all I did was yell at you for it."

Fabian shakes his head. "You had every right to be mad, Anna. I would have been angry too and I'm sorry for keeping the mystery a secret."

I chuckle. "Isn't that ironic?"

He laughs. "It is, isn't it?"

"It's kind of frightening though, I mean what is Sarah so afraid of?" I question in wonder, "And what is this treasure?"

Fabian frowns, "I don't know...and that's what worries me."

"Anna? Anna!"

I groan in annoyance as I open my eyes to see Amber leaning over me. She smiles seeing that I was wake and walks over to her bed. Confused, I glance at the clock then sit up running a hand through my hair.

"Amber, what are you doing?" I ask exasperated, "And why did you have to wake me up? It's 12:30!"

"Nina snuck out again," She whispers grabbing a pair of red heels from the closet, "And I bet Fabian is with her, so we're going to follow them."

I was about to tell her we should just leave them alone but a part of me wanted to see what they were up to. The curiosity got the better of me and I got out of bed just as Amber grabbed a necklace with…garlic?

"Amber why-you know that never mind." I say shaking my head, "Let's just go."

I threw a harry potter sweater over my black tank top and red and gold Gryffindor pajama shorts then slipped on my grey Uggs. I turn to Amber to see her holding out a bunch of garlic for me to hold.

"For protection," She says.

"Amber, I am not holding all that garlic." I tell her rolling my eyes. "Besides, we're just going to the Attic, not Transylvania."

"What?"

I sigh and grab her wrist, "Come on."

I pull her out of the room and we snuck through the hallway and to the attic. I slowly opened the door allowing Amber to go in first before following her and slowly closing the door. Amber held out her red shoes and garlic out looking around as if something was gonna jump out at her.

"Amber, relax." I whisper, "There is nothing up here."

"How do you know that?" She replies worriedly.

I didn't answer. Honestly, I didn't know and the attic is really creepy but I doubted there only thing scary up here was the rats…ew, and the spiders. We crept up the steps that lead to another door. Amber slowly opened it and peaked inside. I notice her visibly relax as she sighs in relief.

"Oh thank goodness you're both here." She says loudly walking into the room. "I thought I was going to get eaten by a ghost."

"Amber, quiet!" I whisper following her inside. I'm guessing that she saw Fabian and Nina, who were sitting on the floor in between an old voice recorder, and was obviously relieved but really, eaten by ghosts?

"What are you two doing here?" Nina questions quietly as both she and Fabian looked up at us in confusion. "And Amber, what's with the heels?"

"I didn't want to miss out on anything." Amber replies, "And these are my lucky heels."

"Amber woke me up, but I came because I kinda wanted to see what was going on." I gave them a sheepish smile to which they both rolled their eyes.

"Wait," Fabian says turning to Amber and motioning to the shoes, "Why aren't you wearing them?"

"I can't actually run away in them." Amber tells them as if it were obvious.

"And Amber, what's with the cloves of garlic? This isn't Twilight!" Fabian remarks earning nods from me and Nina.

I look at her, "I told you."

"No, you said Transylvania. Whatever that is." Amber says, "Besides, the Bible says always be prepared."

Fabian sighs, "Transylvania is where Dracula lives…you know the vampire and Amber, that's the boy scouts."

"Oh."

"Guys, let's just focus." Nina tells us as Amber and I sit down with me beside Fabian and Amber in front of Nina. "What if it makes that horrible noise again?"

Nina told us the screech we heard the other night was from the voice recorder. She and Fabian were up her trying to figure out how to work it when it happened. Amber was still disappointed that it wasn't a date but I assured her they would be together soon to which Nina and Fabian blushed bright red. That only added to my point, it was so obvious they liked each other.

"Don't worry," Fabian reassures her pulling out an oil can from behind his back. "This should do the trick and if it doesn't…get ready to pull the horn off."

"Okay," Nina agrees.

Fabian put the can down and turned on the recorder. Thankfully, instead a loud screech the sound that came out was instead the voice of a little girl.

Mother and Father have given the house a name. Anubis.

Nina looks at us, "It's a girl."

They're going away again soon. To Egypt I think. Father says he has to for his work. When they go I'll be on my own again…with him.

Him?

A bad feeling crept over me as the girl let out a frightened cry. It was like something ice cold had slithered down my back. I shivered; this was starting to get scary.

"Why is she crying?" Amber asks, "It's so-"

"Sad," Nina finished quietly.

I don't want to stay here. I'm frightened of what will happen to me.

Amber shakes her head, she looked really freaked out, "I don't want to stay her either, can we go please."

"No-"

"Amber-"

Amber got up and turned to leave the room but in doing so her foot got caught on something and knocked over a bowl and some other knick knacks onto the floor. We cringed at the sound that we knew Victor has surely heard. Though, I'm really hoping he didn't.

"Right, this is getting way to risky," Fabian says as he stands up putting the recorder on a table beside him while Nina and I stood up as well. "I vote we get out of here and find a sensible and safe way to listen to these things. Amber-" He turns to Amber who is standing by the door, "Quietly."

She nods and the three of us walked out of the room. We went down the creaky steps and once we reached the door to the hall, Amber opened it. My heart dropped to my stomach when she did. Victor was making his way towards us and there was no way to get to our rooms without being seen.

Before any of us could think of a plan, Amber shoved Nina, Fabian and I back inside and closed the door.

"What are you doing?" We heard Victor ask. "You know you're not supposed to be sneaking around after lights out."

"Hello Trudy," Amber says in a weird zombie like voice. "Ice Cream, Brownies …Yum…Yum…"

The three of us looked at each other and laughed quietly. Only Amber would come up with something like that…well, Alfie probably would too. Aw, maybe they would make a cute couple.

"Yes, unlike you Miss. Millington I was not born yesterday. Now what were you doing?" Victor replies.

"I'm starving and I don't care about your stupid rules." Amber shouts, "I'm on a fridge raid!"

"Amber Millington get back here now!

I heard Amber run and Victor following her. Once we were sure that they were out of the room we stepped out into the hall laughing.

"Impressive." Fabian smiles.

Nina folds her arms, "She's just full of surprises. Maybe she can be trusted after all."

"You didn't think you can trust us?" I question facing them.

"Well, it's not that we don't…it's just Amber is a bit of blabber mouth." Nina explains as we walked to our room, "I was just worried she'd accidentally tell someone."

"Yeah, she can be like that sometimes." I agree, "But, I've known Amber for five years now and she's my best friend so I can assure you that when it counts she'll keep a secret."

"But, I'm hungry!" Amber shouts as if proving my point and was followed by an angry yell to be quiet from Victor.

Nina chuckles, "I can see that."

Fabian nods and throws his arm over my shoulders, "Yeah, looks like we got two new members to help us with this mystery."

"So you trust me?" I ask.

He smirks, "No, I just didn't want you to feel bad."

"Fabian!"

Ha, I love that last line. Ooh and didn't I tell you Anna was going to find out what is going on soon and all thanks to Amber too haha! I'm glad they know about the Mystery now, so I can actually start writing about it...well I kind of did already but still lol. Anyways please review and let me know what you think! Thanks so much for reading!
