A/N: I got a request from one of my readers to do a fanfic with Near in it, so i did, and here it is. Keep in mind that in this story Near is eight and Mello is ten, just so there is no confusion. (Sorry if it's not the correct age difference, don't kill me!) I hope you like it! Don't forget to review please, it is greatly appreciated! I do not own Death Note.

Just In Time For Valentine's Day

It was February 14th; Valentine's Day. The children were allowed to leave the Wammy Orphanage for the day to buy treats for their crushes.

One ten year old boy named Mello, had decided to stay and make the gifts himself. He spent hours in the kitchen making cookies and brownies, most of them were for himself as he was a major chocoholic. By the time he was done, he was covered in flour and egg yolk. After retreaving the brownies from the oven, and putting them on a platter, he marched into his room wearing a proud smile on his face. On the counter, they cooled while Mello went to take a shower.

Meanwhile a little boy named Near, was in his room assembling a tower of Legos. His face was scrunched up in concentration and his white bangs hung down over his eyes.

He jumped in surprise when he heard a knock on his door. "Come in," he said in a rather expressionless voice. A few seconds passed before the door opened to reaveal Mello holdin a brownie in one of his hands. "Hello Mello," Near said souding surprised. He had always been under the impression that Mello hated him by the way he always called him a 'stupid albino kid'. So he was not expecting him to visit.

"Hey," Mello grumbled taking a step towards the white-haired boy and extending his hand to him.

"Umm...what's this?"Near asked with a brownie in front of his face.

"It's a brownie, stupid. I made it for you for Valentine's Day." Mello said, sounding annoyed.

"Oh, well thank you very much Mello," Near said taking the brownie form the other boy's hand.

"Yeah well, Roger said that if I made one for Matt, I had to make one for you too," Mello lied. "Well bye." He said as he inched out of the room.

"Wait!" Near called. He went up to Mello who was already heading out the door, and kissed him on the cheek without warning. "Happy Valentine's Day Mello," He said quietly.

"Uh huh, whatever." Mello replied. He turned around to hide the red spreading over his cheeks.

As Mello walked away, Near sighed looking pleased. "He'll be back," Near thought to himself.
