Hello. In the episode 'The Ultimate Computer' (I think that's the episode) and in the movie Star Trek V (but don't quote me on that), Kirk quotes a line from John Masefield's poem "Sea Fever". The second line to be exact: "And all I ask is a tall ship, and a star to steer her by". Well, since I have a recitation on Monday, I decided to do that poem for my recitation. Then, I decided to try and rewrite the poem so that instead of coming from the perspective of an old sea captain, it came from that of a starship captain, just for fun. This is the result. Unfortunately, I can't make stanzas here.
I must go up to the sky again, to the lonely sky and stars,
And all I ask is a sturdy ship, and a way to know where we are;
And the engine's jolt and the stars' song and their light falling behind,
And the black sea with diamond eyes, where not all worlds are kind.
I must go up to the sky again, for the call of the endless sky,
'Tis a clear call and a haunting call that I cannot deny;
And all I ask is another day where the future's wild and free,
And the things unknown and unseen are awaiting their discovery.
I must go up to the sky again, to the place I most belong,
To the comet's way and the star's way where the days and nights are long;
And all I ask is a good tale from a fellow curious explorer,
And to feel the Earth turn beneath my feet when the long journey's over.
I might add other poems to this. Tell me what you think.
