A/N: So this started off as an exercise in one of my college classes. The idea was to write a story using nothing but dialogue to set a scene/come up with a plot. What emerged was this. Just a one-shot. Hope you enjoy it.
"Hey, where are the earrings Grandma used to wear? I would like to have them," said Hilary. "Grandma was special to me and she promised me I could have them."
"Oh really? Darlin, I'm way ahead of you. Do you like them?" Janet pulled her hair away from her ears, revealing grandma's two sapphire drop earrings.
"Aunt Janet! Grandma said I could have those!"
"She did? When? Honey, she gave them to me!"
"It's not fair! I want something special from Grandma!"
"You could have her embroidered, hand-stitched handkerchief."
"Ew. Yeah right. Like I really want some old lady's snot rag."
"Give me one good reason why you want the earrings."
"Because Grandma said—
"I heard you the first time. Why are the earrings special to you?"
"Grandma let me wear them to the prom, my date complimented me and kissed me because of them."
"Yeah and Grandma didn't see those earrings for two weeks. By the time you gave them back, Grandma had to take them to be cleaned and fixed. There was mud on
both earrings and one of them was chipped. Your grandma had to pay a lot of money for your frivolity!"
"Well, why do you want them?"
"I was going to wear them in my wedding."
"What wedding? You never married Robert."
"Because he got cold feet and didn't want to be married! It wasn't my fault! I did nothing! Besides, your grandma used to wear these earrings all the time and they remind me of her. Not because I spent one night wearing them to impress a date, but because your grandma raised me and made me into the person I am today. So don't go acting like you're better than me!"
Hilary's mouth dropped. "But—"
"No buts! I don't want to hear your petty excuses. You are so self-centered, it's no wonder you don't have a man in your life."
"I have Trevor."
"You had Trevor. Except he decided to go bungee jumping on your wedding day and look what happened."
"He's not dead. The doctor's said he could come out of the coma any day now."
"Honey, he's been in a coma for four years. I don't think he's gonna come out of it anytime soon."
"You're just saying that because I actually had a wedding day."
"Yes, but it never actually happened."
"It was going to."
"But it didn't."
"Fine. You know what? Keep Grandma's stupid earrings." Hilary walked away, her nose in the air. "They're just a cheap piece of costume jewelry anyway."
Janet watched her niece go before sinking onto the bed, head in her hands. "Oh Robert, why did you have to leave?" She felt the tears leak out of her eyes. "It would have been such a beautiful wedding."
