Chapter Five

A light flush dusted Chi-Chi's face as she looked down, feeling awkward for bringing up the subject in the first place. "Oh, well...I'm sorry." She had put her foot in her mouth.

Kagome merely shrugged, not thinking it was that big of a deal. "Its fine. I mean life's what you make of it. Sure it'd be nice to know what my birthday is so I can gorge myself on cake but whatever." She shared a smile and laugh with Gohan.

Goku smiled at how easily the two interacted, it was good to see. It stirred something deep in him and it put him a bit on edge. As a child he had lived his life listening to instincts, it kept him alive and even after meeting Bluma he was driven by his instincts. They had kept him and his friends alive up till now.

Yet Chi-Chi hated it, she was a more logical kind of person, hence why he usually pushed his instincts down and didn't say a word when she tried to instill the same views in their son. Logic was good in all but it made people feel...cold? It was even more evident how cooly Chi-Chi treated their son when he saw how happy and outgoing he was with Kagome

Blinking the thoughts away he stretched his hands over his head and rolled his neck. Ignoring the scowl sent his way by his wife he grinned and lowered his arms to rest on the table. "Thanks for the food."

Chichi sighed, her ire waning, and nodded. It was wrong of her to take out her embarrassment on her husband. "Of course, if you're all done I'll start cleaning up, Gohan go start your homework. Kagome feel free to take a bath and Goku please can you at least go do a once over on the fields? I want to be sure everything is growing properly, they're our lively hood since you don't have a job." The jab fell so easily from her lips that it was almost second nature to her.

Goku frowned slightly but nodded his head, he didn't want to get into it with her again about his lack of a job. How many times had she yelled and screamed at him? It wasn't his fault he had never had any real schooling and honestly up until they were married he had just wandered from place to place living off the land and training as hard as he could.

It was odd for him to end that and settle down in his grandfather's house, but at the time he was so excited about the idea of a new adventure, one called marriage. It had been so exciting and new in the beginning, they were both so young and happy...

A small frown marred Kagome's lips, it seemed taking small digs at Goku was so ingrained into Chichi that she didn't even notice she was doing it... While it wasn't her place to judge their relationship she did notice it made Gohan upset and that was not okay.

Rolling her shoulders she shot the younger boy a smile. "Maah, mind if I help Goku check the fields? I worked a summer or two in some before. I can tell you if your crop is going to be good or not?"

Chichi blinked at the offer but quickly nodded. "If you don't mind, it would be nice to have someone who knows what they're doing take a look. Afterwards you can take your bath."

"Thank you..."Kagome smiled at Chichi, she didn't want to impose but she really was just wandering from place to place right now, staying in once place for a couple days would be a nice change.
