Lying
Lying came easier now, after a day to think it over in his mind and several years of actually do it on a day to day basis. He had, after all, been lying for years. Nessa had been an easy target with her romantic fantasies and daydreams having already paved the way for the sweet nothings he whispered in her ears. It had come so naturally, like breathing. Perhaps it was natural, or he'd just wanted Galinda's approval so badly that he'd done it without thought. Boq had whispered "I love you" so often into Nessa's neck during their nights together that he could almost believe himself.
Almost. He wasn't that good.
The news of his Madame's death had come to him with the trees and feigning rust was easy enough. He just had to not move. What a novel idea—a man of metal was unable to move because of rain. He supposed that rain rusted things over that quickly wherever this girl was from. She was almost easier than Nessa. He couldn't exactly be given away by his facial expressions though, so this Dorothy had that advantage over Nessa.
That and she was not madly in love with him.
Perhaps madly was putting it flippantly. Then again, he was suddenly completely made of metal and wandering towards his maker with a scarecrow who walked like a drunken prince and an idiot girl who had never learned to talk to strangers. Boq shifted the axe. He'd become suspicious in his servitude.
This entire situation was completely mad. One more little lie wouldn't hurt.
"As for you, my galvanized friend, you want a heart. You don't know how lucky you are not to have one. Hearts will never be practical until they can be made unbreakable."
"But I still want one."
