A/N: Not my best work, but I think it turned out all right. This idea just sort of popped into my head last night and wouldn't leave me alone. This is probably the shortest oneshot I've ever written... I hope you like it!
"Kens?"
"Callen." The brunette replied without turning around.
The senior agent walked across the roof and leaned against the railing next to Kensi. "You want to tell me what's going on?" He glanced at her and noticed the beer bottle in her hand. "And why you're trying to get drunk?"
She glared at him and took a deliberately slow swallow of her drink. "I know how to hold my liquor."
"I didn't question that."
They stood in silence for a bit.
"I've never had a New Year's kiss." She said suddenly. Callen forced himself not to do a double-take, and opened his mouth to reply but she continued before he had a chance. "It's just a stupid little thing, but it's always bothered me. I was fine with it until... Until my dad died. It sounds stupid, but... that's what changed things."
"Kens..."
"You don't understand. I'm not making sense." Kensi pressed her palms against her eyes. "It never mattered to me until he died because once he died, it was like I was cursed. If I were in a relationship when holidays came around, something would always happen and I'd be single by Christmas. Then... then I got Jack and I stopped worrying about it. I knew he wouldn't leave except... He always was gone for the holidays. It was his job. I don't blame him for it, but..." She took a shaky breath. "It was like this, this thing in the back of my head telling me that it would never happen. I'd never start the New Year with a kiss. And then Jack came home for good finally, and, somewhere in the back of my mind, I thought that I'd finally get my kiss. But... you know what happened. He was just... gone."
Feeling out of his element, Callen slipped an arm around her waist. Sounding far too scared to be his Kensi, she whispered, "Tell me I'm not cursed. Tell me it's not my fault. Please, Callen."
"It's not you, Kensi. You know that. It's nothing you could control." She stared at the ground. "Hey. Look at me." He put two fingers under her chin and made her meet his eyes. "None of that is your fault. I pomise."
"You never make promises."
Callen ignored that. "Come on. I'm driving you home."
She opened her mouth as if to protest, but thought better of it. "Okay."
They crossed the roof, his arm still around her, and were almost at the door leading back into the building when Callen's watch started beeping. He glanced down at it and smiled. "Hey, Kens."
"Hm?"
He leaned forward and kissed her cheek lightly. "Happy New Year."
