Chapter Six

Double D stood in front of the cafeteria's many vending machines; he slowly entered a small series on numbers into the dial pad. A loud "Kurclunk" could be heard as a can of soda came rolling below the machine. With a juice box already in one hand; he reached out for the can of soda with his free hand. After he grabbed the can he slowly walked over to Marie; whom was waiting patently at a nearby cafeteria table.
" right?" Double D asked as he polity gave the can of soda to Marie.
"Aw, you remembered my favorite soda Dumplin." Marie said with a cheeky smile.
"Marie...I would appreciate it; if you would refrain yourself from calling me that." Double D replied; as the bridge of his nose began to change to a rosy red.
"But Dumplin is what I've always called you." Marie said slightly startled by Double D's reaction.
"Well, circumstances have changed. So I would prefer if you called me by name in the future." Double D said as he poked a straw into his juice box.
"I'll say they've changed." Marie mumbled to herself as she took a sip of her soda.
For a few short minutes the two just sat across from each other; with only the sound of one or the other taking sips of their beverage to fill the awkward void.
"So no. "Oh my God Marie, I'm so glad that you're back in town?" Marie asked
"I will admit...That when the principle said that we had a new student. I would have never guessed that it was you." Double D replied.
"What, did he not recognize my name or something?"
"No no, our school has a new principle. He just started this semester in fact."
"Ah, I see." Marie said as she and Double D once again took another long and awkward drink of their beverages.
"So, how come you chose to come to Peach Creek High. Isn't it going to be a long commute from Lemmon Brook?"
"Well that's what I wanted to talk to you about over the summer." Marie said.
"I wanted to tell you that I was going to stay at my aunt's place here in Peach Creek for the semester."
"I...I see." Was all Double D could muster to say as he averted his gaze from Marie.
She then took in a deep breath of air and focused all of her attention towards Double D.
"Double D...Can we please talk about what happened?"
Double D continued to avert his gaze from Marie; which continued to discourage her.
"Eddward, please?" Marie pleaded as she reached out her hands to his.
Seeing this coming; Double D quickly shoved Marie's hands from his and kept them out of her reach.
"There isn't anything to talk about Marie." Double D said as he looked towards the criteria floor.
"You said what you felt that night; that's all there is to it." Double D said as he quickly stood up from his seat.
"I believe you know where all your classes are. So if you don't mind; I have to return to class now." Double D said as he hastily retreated from the cafeteria.
Marie wanted to stop Double D; but knew it would be to no avail. So all she did was just sit alone in the cafeteria, with her hand reaching out towards Double D.
