Aragorn returned from the dead soon after that and soon Sarah found herself in a hall trying to convince the horse lords to let her be part of the battle. Merlin and Arthur were off being fitted for new armor along with the rest of the ragtag group of farmers the Rohirrim needed to bolster their numbers.
"Ah, come on. I can help" Sarah said to Theoden. The king of Rohan gave her a bemused look.
"You know you remind me of Eowyn at times. She too is always looking for a chance to fight with the men. I admire your spirit but I will not risk your life" he said, not unkindly.
"Sire, as much as I would like to see her safe from harm I think perhaps she should join us at least from the safety of the hornburg" Aragorn said sitting in a chair behind the king, remembering his talk with Gandalf. Theoden turned to the former ranger with a curious glance.
"And why should I put this mad woman on the wall where she will likely be slaughtered like so many others. I have failed to protect too many in this land. I will not let her die as well" he argued. Aragorn let out a breath before standing to face the lord of the horse lords.
"Because Gandalf said that she knows things that will help us overcome this army. She is also no stranger to war and has fought valiantly against many foes" Aragorn said calmly.
'Aw, that's so nice. I'm not sure five orcs count as many foes but I'll take it' Sarah thought to herself while the king pondered for a moment.
"Well, I suppose since she is already armored like a Rohirrim..." Theoden began gesturing to the guard uniform she had picked up while escaping the Edoras dungeon. Sarah actually really loved the outfit. It had one of those epic green capes that flowed in the wind as she walked around the wall of Helm's deep.
"then she can fight with us but I would have her stand with me near the hornburg rather than on the wall" he finished. Aragorn nodded in agreement before gesturing for Sarah to follow him out of the hall. Sarah squinted as they walked into the sun and followed Aragorn down the steps to the courtyard.
"I wished that you had gone back to Lorien" Aragorn muttered as they passed several Rohan soldiers running to complete various errands.
"You would miss my spectacular awesomeness though" Sarah said cheerfully, although in truth she was rather nervous at the prospect of being in the middle of a giant battle. She was also scared of falling off the wall into a sea of Uruk-kai. There would only be spikes and blood thirsty monsters at the bottom rather than a blue stunt mat.
"Stay next to Merlin and Arthur and do as the king says. I also suggest you get some sleep before the army arrives" he said as they reached the other side of the courtyard below the hornburg. Sarah realized that was probably a good idea since that night was going to be a looong all nighter.
"Yes, I'm going to go dream about having laser gun now that would destroy all the Uruks" Sarah said before running back up the steps to the barracks where she shared a corner with Merlin and Arthur. Sleep weirdly came easy to her but days and days of bickering and riding horseback had actually made her tired. She briefly wondered when Merlin and Arthur would be back before drifting off to sleep.
"NEEAAAAAAAAAEEEEEEERRGGGHHHHHH" sounded a far off home. Sarah was immediately roused from her epic slumber and blinked hard.
"Yay, the elves are cannon" she muttered to herself. She pushed herself out of bed and walked sleepily to find everybody else. When she emerged from the Hornburg she was greeted by a flurry of activity. There were men now epically standing by the wall while others ran about. She even saw several elves walking quickly but still with fabulous grace amongst the chaos.
"Sarah!" Arthur yelled. Sarah whirled to find the Prince storming up to her, his chainmail clinking as he approached. He was also wore the green tabard of rohan and had one of the fantastic cloaks Sarah loved.
"How did you convince them to let you stay on the wall?" he asked exasperatedly.
"You know me. I'm very persuasive" Sarah grinned at him.
"You don't make sense half the time!"
"You're only jealous of my rad negotiation skills"
"Lady Sarah! The king requests your presence beside him immediately. Your companions are to join you" a guard bellowed to the two of them as he fought his way through the chaos.
"Yes come, my companion. The king is in need of my epic expertise" Sarah said mischieviously. Arthur looked stunned as she drug him along to follow the guard.
"I cannot believe this" Arthur muttered to himself.
"Believe it! Also where is Merlin?" Sarah asked, realizing that the wizard was mysteriously absent.
"Here!" Merlin yelled as he burst through the crowd to join them. His new armor clinking as he pushed past a few Rohirrim.
"Where the hell have you been?" Arthur yelled.
"Just getting ready" Merlin said.
"There's a bloody battle about to start. Move it Merlin!" Arthur yelled.
"Quiet down!" yelled Gamling over the noise. Sarah realized that the guard had left them at their position. She could kind of see the king over the heads of the ugly rohirrim helmets. Everything was quiet as the Rohirrim stopped talking and the men running around preparing finally took their positions on the wall. It was time to wait for the Uruks to arrive.
Waiting for the Uruks to show up was actually really boring so Arthur, Merlin, and Sarah quietly resumed their usual banter.
"This kind of sucks guys" Sarah remarked.
"What does?" Merlin asked, translating sucks as bad.
"The whole waiting around for the giant army thing"
"Well, at least it can't get any worse" Merlin commented.
"Or you know it could start raining and get even more depressing" Sarah said and on cue thunder sounded and rain began to clink against the armor of the Rohirrim.
'Yes! I knew that would happen! I have the best timing' Sarah thought to herself and she held in her laughter.
"Sarah, Merlin…?" Arthur began.
"Yes?"
"Hm?"
"I just want you both to know that I hate the two of you" he said completely deadpan.
"We love you too, Arthur" Sarah laughed quietly.
"Speak for yourself" Merlin smiled.
Arthur snorted but soon they were all quiet as the army came into view. The battle began largely as Sarah remembered it with the old man firing the arrow first. The elves reigned arrows epically down on the orcs but weirdly know bomb was placed in the grate that allowed the river through. Sarah didn't know this at the time but everything became clear as a bomb whizzed over the deeping wall and exploded in a group of elves. Sarah's eyes widened.
'WHY ARE THERE BOMBS FLYING?!'
"Lady Sarah!" Theoden yelled over the noise. Sarah ran through a few Rohirrim to answer the king's call.
"This would be a good time to use your knowledge to assist us!" he yelled. Sarah froze up for a minute. What the hell could she do to fight amidst flying bombs assailing the castle? This was not even supposed to happen! Her eyes were wide with fear as her brain turned for some kind of solution before it dawned on her.
"MEERRRRLIIINN!" she yelled, sounding almost like Arthur.
"Sarah?" Merlin said confused at her outburst as he ran up to her. His armor chinking more loudly as he joined her next to the king.
"I have an idea but you must keep Arthur occupied for this to work." she told Theoden urgently.
"What do you have in mind?" the king asked.
"I can't tell you but I'll get those exploding things out of the air if you do as I say. Also Arthur must not know what I'm doing. Tell him you changed your mind and sent me back into the caves with Merlin and then send him down to the gate to help barricade it. Trust me" Sarah said, now sounding a tad desperate.
"If Gandalf and Aragorn have trusted you thus far then I would be a fool not to. Very well, Lady Sarah. I will distract your companion" Theoden said.
"Awesome! I'll be back in a few. Come on, Merlin!" the American said. She grabbed Merlin's hand and pulled him down the stairs of the hornburg. She could distantly hear Theoden calling Arthur to his side.
"Sarah, what are we doing?" Merlin yelled amidst the rising chaos as they neared the battle.
"I have a plan and it mostly involves you using magic to explode the bombs before they kill all of us!" Sarah said as she pulled him up the stair to wall above the gate. It was crowded up there as the people of Rohan chucked rocks at the Uruks assaulting the gate.
"You know I have magic!?" Merlin yelled in surprise.
"You use it all the time! Only Arthur is stupid enough not to notice! We also should probably have an emotional moment where we talk about this later but let's deal with the bombs first!" Sarah yelled. Merlin was rather shocked and could only nod in response.
"Right, good! Now I'll keep watch for things trying to kill us and you focus on shooting spells at the flying bombs!" she yelled. The wall shook as another bomb was catapulted at them.
"Alright!" Merlin agreed. Sarah drew her sword and watched for Uruks as the Warlock wracked his brain for the right spell. Sarah braced herself against the wall as another bomb went off. This one had landed on the elves again behind the deeping wall.
"You could hurry up though! Try flipendo if you have to!" she said as she heaved herself up with her sword.
'Getting up is hard when you're in armor' she thought to herself.
"Flipendo?" Merlin questioned, although he seemed more focused on finding the right spell.
"It's from Harry Potter… but just stop the bombs!" Sarah called. She didn't have to tell him twice though as the wizard suddenly had a mask of concentration on as he reached his hand out. Sarah looked out at the battlefield and let out a relieved breath as she saw small explosions happening mid air. It was almost like watching fireworks go off at the fourth of July. Sarah smiled as a cheer went up among the rohirrim.
"Merlin can you make these things fall back and explode in the Uruk-hai army" Sarah asked.
"Watch me!" Merlin smiled at her.
The Canadian was furious as he saw the bombs exploding mid air.
"FOR THE LOVE OF CANADA, HOW CAN THIS BE HAPPENING?" he shouted at a confused Uruk. The hybrid orc just shrugged.
"Agh, you're just stupid hoser. Aren't you, eh?" he bellowed at the Uruk. The giant orc clearly had no idea what that meant since he didn't speak Canadian.
"The catapults are working fine, perhaps it is your invention that has failed" the Uruk sneered.
"What do you know, eh?" Henry spat. The Uruk did not reply and merely ran off to go assist in the battle. The Canadian fumed next to the catapult.
"Damn, mindless beasts. They're no better than a bloody moose" he ranted to himself. The Canadian didn't get to go on in his native language much longer since Merlin had mastered sending the bombs back and one struck home and took out the mad man from Canada along with the catapult.
"Yes, Merlin! Take out the Catapults! We can survive this!" Sarah yelled as she saw the flaming remnants of the catapult from the wall. Merlin responded by sending back three bombs at once to explode on the remaining catapults. The sky was finally clear of the spiked balls of death. Sarah didn't get to celebrate for long as suddenly a large figure suddenly blocked her view of the valley. She let out a yell as it charged at her. In a stunned surprise she held her sword in front of her as it came at her.
'Oh God, I'm gonna die!'
"Sarah!" Merlin yelled, he had been distracted while he checked to make sure all the catapults were gone. Sarah fell to the ground with the orc on top of her. Merlin ran but Sarah was clearly alive as she grunted while trying to push the thing off her. Merlin rolled it off and Sarah coughed hoarsely.
"Ow" she finally managed.
"Are you alright?" Merlin asked worriedly, checking her for injuries. The only thing he could find was a large bruise on her forehead.
"Yea, I'm not dying yet. Also I think this Uruk was really unintelligent because it just ran onto my sword" Sarah said, absently poking it to make sure it was actually dead.
"FALL BACKKK!" came Theoden's voice.
"Looks like we're done up here!" Merlin yelled as he pulled Sarah up. Their cloaks billowed behind her as they ran down the stairs to reach the hornbug. Uruks swarmed up the ladders behind her. The two raced through the fray and through the doors just as they slammed shut.
"Can I just die now?" Sarah asked exhausted. She walked a few feet forward and slumped down the nearest wall. Merlin's chainmail clanked against the floor as he sat down next to her.
"Not on my watch" Arthur said as he helped Hana shove a table against the door.
"And where in the hell were you? Theoden said you had been sent back here" Arthur continued, his voice was clearly annoyed that his friends were in danger without him knowing. Merlin was too tired to even respond as he leaned his head back against the wall with his eyes closed.
"We just went outside to see what was happening" Sarah lied as she rubbed her forehead gingerly.
'Damn that actually really hurts' she thought tiredly. It didn't help that Aragorn was yelling at Theoden about something. Arthur was also yelling something at her about being stupid and running out to watch people retreat. She couldn't really remember. She blearily realized that Merlin looked unconscious now against the wall.
"Merlin?" she asked worriedly.
"I'll be fine" he ground out tiredly, clearly spending all night epically exploding bombs mid air had taken its tole on him.
Sarah nodded wearily. "You know you did awesome dude" she said and drowsily patted his arm. Merlin smiled a little although his eyes were still closed.
"My name is Merlin" he mumbled.
"Oh I know" Sarah said, realizing that she sounded rather punch drunk. That Uruk to the face may have done more damage than she thought.
"Then why do you keep calling me dude?" Merlin asked, his voice tired but still somewhat amused.
"It's a word that means an attractive person among my people" Sarah said without thinking.
"Oh does it?"
"Mhm"
"Will you both stop flirting! We're still under attack" Arthur yelled as he shoved a chair against the door. The door rocked as the Uruks slammed against it as if to emphasize his point.
"It's s'okay cause Gandalf is almost here" Sarah basically slurred.
"How do you even know that?!" Arthur asked while helping a Rohirrim drag another table toward the door. There were a convenient number of tables in the room.
"First light… fifth day" she said lazily, as her head drooped onto Merlin's shoulder. She managed to gesture to a golden ray of light streaming from an epic window on the other side of the room. Aragorn turned and looked at the awesome window. Gandalf's words echoed through his head.
"She is right" Aragorn said quietly to himself.
"Yea, I know everything cause I'm awesome" she mumbled into an unconscious Merlin's shoulder.
"What does she mean Aragorn?" Theoden said, taking Sarah seriously after she had stopped the bombs.
"Ride with me. Ride out and meet them" Aragorn said.
"For death and glory?" Theoden asked.
"For Rohan, for your people" he elaborated dramatically.
"Yes, yes" Theoden nodded. "The horn of Helm Hammerhand shall sound in the deep one last time!"
"YES!" roared Gimli.
"Yay" Sarah said quietly, sounding delirious.
"Arthur" Aragorn said, striding towards the Prince who was bracing the door against the Uruks trying to get in. "Take Sarah and Merlin to the caves. They are too tired to fight. We will barricade the entrance behind you" he said urgently. Arthur nodded at the other future king
"Good luck out there" Arthur said before grasping Aragorn's arm.
"And to you, my friend" Aragorn said smiling. Arthur then hauled Sarah over his shoulder while another guard helped a bleary eyed Merlin to his feat.
"Why is the world upside down?" Sarah groaned. Arthur snorted as he moved as quickly as he could through the hall to the caves.
"Go to sleep Sarah" Arthur said with a small smile on his face.
"M'kay" Sarah managed to say before the loud noise of the raging battle faded into darkness.
