Why was he sad?

He ruled the night; humans would cower in fear from him and beg Arceus to make him go away.

He was powerful, no Pokémon… not even the vaulted Mewtwo was immune to his powers.

He had everything that a Prince of Nightmares could possibly need.

Except one thing… and she hated him.

She hated his very existence, but he could not see enough of her.

She was beauty incarnate to him… everything he was not.

He was darkness, she was light.

He was pain, she was pleasure.

They loved her, all the Pokémon and humans welcomed her into their minds, he had to force his way in.

He had tried to get along, in the beginning, but had failed.

She would have nothing to do with him.

She had hated him on sight; she had even gone so far as to demand that Arceus destroy him.

She said he wasn't needed.

But he had been mesmerized.

Her long neck, her translucent wings…

He had never seen anything as beautiful as her.

And she wanted him dead.

Giving nightmares was his job, the only thing he could do.

She hated him for it.

She saw him as evil, a conniving beast.

She would attack him on sight, trying to end his life.

She did not know that he lived for these moments.

Those battles were the only times that he could see her.

The only time that he could be close to her,

He could have easily won… but he held back, he would never harm her.

He would sometimes follow her, watching from a distance as she gave good dreams to the world.

She would never know he was there.

She would always see him as a freak, as a demon.

Someone to be feared and destroyed, someone without emotions,

But it was not so, even the Prince of Nightmares can feel lonely.

And so he would wait, ever so impatiently, for the nights that they would meet in battle.

Just so he could see her again.

But she would always hate him.

And he would always love her.

This is why Darkrai, Prince of Nightmares, is always sad.

Wanted to try my hand at a one shot using one of (I think) the most overlooked pairings in Pokémon. I also like the idea that Darkrai isn't really bad… he is just doing his job after all. Plus… one shots can be jotted down in between classes and homework, epic stories… not so much.
