Chapter 11 – Bitchen' in the Kitchen

When they finally got back to the cabin, Astrid and Tuffnut were annoyed to see Mandy waiting for them. As they approached, Mandy opened her mouth to greet them, but Tuffnut hissed at her. Squeaking in fear, she quickly raced back into the cabin. Astrid helped Tuffnut over to the bed and he sat down, sighing.

"Are you all right?" Astrid wondered. Tuffnut shrugged.

"You mean besides my broken, bleeding ankle?" he asked, "I guess so."

Astrid had tried her best to wrap up his ankle, but it was clear it would need more advanced medical care. She just hoped that Stoic and Stench wouldn't hold this injury against them. She was mad enough as it was that Kreb seemed to be doing better than them. She also took a moment to ask the question she had been dreading to ask herself. Had Sandy meant to just injure them? Or had he meant to kill them?

Now that Mandy and Sandy had switched cabins, Hiccup made sure to keep a close eye on Sandy for Tuffnut, now that he was in the same cabin as his sister. As soon as he and Ruffnut made it back to the cabin, Belchus burst out the door, taking the two of them by surprise.

"We will need food and fire!" Belchus declared to no one in particular, "I, being the future chief of my tribe, will find food. You three find wood." He gestured to the two and to Sandy who had slipped out of the cabin behind him. Then, without saying anything more, he leaped away, like an inhuman being.

Hiccup and Ruffnut stared after him. "I really wish he would stop telling us what to do," Hiccup muttered.

Ruffnut was about to reply when Sandy swaggered up to her. "You want to go look for fire wood with me? Just the two of us?" He wiggled an eyebrow at her. "I'm really good at finding wood, if you know what I mean."

Before she could reply, Hiccup gently took her arm. "Actually, we were just about to do that ourselves," he said, trying not to sound hostile, "Right, Ruffnut?"

"Right," she muttered. As they turned away to head into the woods, Hiccup couldn't help but notice the self satisfied look on Sandy's face melt away into anger and jealousy. He tried not to smirk as he and Ruffnut walked away into the woods.

Snotlout was annoyed that Fishlegs and the other two in their cabin didn't have survival instincts like him. How did they expect to live for another two days with no food? As he sat and watched Fishlegs, Noseferatu, and Sharkfeet futilely try to build a fire out a couple of twigs and some leaves, he sighed.

"Ok, I'm not gonna watch this anymore," he announced, standing up, "I'm going to try to find some food. Fishlegs, come with me."

Fishlegs looked at him. "But I'm no good at finding food," he told Snotlout, "Maybe I should just help with the fire."

"Yes, because you're doing a bang up job of that," Snotlout replied, sarcastically, "Now let's go."

Looking slightly hurt, Fishlegs stood and followed Snotlout as he led the way into the forest. Snotlout strode along with confidence while Fishlegs shuffled along behind him, keeping an eye out for any danger. He was sure these woods were full of evil beasts. Why else would Slackjaw have sent them there? Hearing an owl hoot in the distance, Fishlegs shivered and raced to keep up with Snotlout.

Hiccup and Ruffnut slowly shuffled along, trying to find any wood that could be used for a fire. Despite being in a forest, there seemed to be a lack of twigs and branches, almost as if someone else had already taken everything the woods had to offer. They had been walking for nearly ten minutes and hadn't found anything. Eventually, Ruffnut stopped.

"Can we rest?" she requested, "We've been walking forever and haven't found anything." She sighed and leaned against a boulder. "What's with this forest? Why are there no twigs or stuff under the trees?"

Hiccup walked over and stood next to her. "I don't know," he confessed, "Maybe it's supposed to be part of the challenge; to make it harder to survive."

Ruffnut merely scoffed at the suggestion. Hiccup sighed and leaned against the boulder next to her. They stood in silence for a while, as Ruffnut stared at the ground, rubbing her foot in the dirt and Hiccup looked up at the trees.

Eventually, Hiccup spoke. "So, should we talk about what happened last night?" he asked.

"Why?" Ruffnut muttered, "There's nothing to talk about. We made a mistake, so let's move on with our lives."

"But maybe there is something to talk about," Hiccup insisted, "I mean, we did, you know…"

"Don't say it out loud!" Ruffnut hissed suddenly. She looked wildly around, as if expecting someone to pop out of the trees or something. When no one did, she turned back to Hiccup. "I know what happened," she said, "I was there!"

Hiccup sighed. It was hard to talk to Ruffnut, especially when she was being stubborn. He looked over at her and saw her staring back at him. Suddenly, a strange feeling overcame him and he started to lean forward, as did Ruffnut.

"What are we doing?" she asked quietly.

"I don't know," Hiccup whispered, "What if Astrid finds out?"

"Astrid doesn't have to know," she replied.

And then they kissed. Gently at first, a cautious touch as if testing each other. But then they kissed more deeply, both of them gently wrapping their arms around each other. Hiccup pulled Ruffnut in to kiss her deeper and she sighed in contentment. Their bodies were pressed against one another, warming each other from the brisk cold that had settled over the forest. They stayed there for a while, holding each other and kissing deeply, perhaps more than they should have. When they finally pulled away, Hiccup immediately started rubbing his arm in awkwardness, and Ruffnut stared at the ground. They looked at each other and both opened their mouths to say something, when suddenly they heard the bushes rustle.

Cursing softly, Ruffnut stepped in front of Hiccup and drew out her ax, ready dismember whatever was coming towards them. Then suddenly, they heard two familiar voices.

"I still don't see why I have to carry more wood than you do," Astrid complained to Tuffnut as they stepped out of the bushes.

"Oh, I'm sorry," Tuffnut hissed, "I didn't realize your ankle was broken as well. You know, making it very hard to walk without any support? Is your leg killing you too?"

"You're going to hold this over me for the rest of our lives, aren't you?" Astrid growled.

"Yes, I am!" Tuffnut snarled.

They stopped and stared when they saw that they were standing in front of Hiccup and Ruffnut, who had just barely stopped herself in time from taking her brother's head off. They all stared in astonishment at each other.

"What are you two doing here?" Astrid wondered, a look of shock on her face, "Not that I'm not happy to see both of you, but seriously, what the heck are you two doing here? We just left our cabin like, two minutes ago!"

"We've been out here for quite awhile," Hiccup muttered, "We've been trying to find sticks and branches for a fire, but there's nothing out here!" He hoped he sounded convincing enough that that's all they were doing, and that Astrid didn't notice that he refused to look her in the eye.

"What are you talking about?" Tuffnut scoffed, "We've found plenty of wood." His and Astrid's arms were filled with twigs and thick branches to prove his point.

"Yeah, well good for you," Ruffnut grumbled under her breath as she put her ax away.

"Here," Tuffnut said, "You can have these. We don't need that much wood anyway." He pressed the heavy bundle into Hiccup's arms, who immediately collapsed under its weight. Free of his burden, Tuffnut gently leaned on Astrid's shoulder, who helped Hiccup to his feet.

"Are you all right?" she asked him.

"I'm fine," Hiccup murmured as Astrid brushed him off. Ruffnut stepped over and took the bundle from him while also casting a side glare at her brother who shrugged.

"We were about to go find food," Astrid informed them, "Would you care to come with us?" She wore an expression that told them she desperately wanted them to as she didn't want to go back to only having Tuffnut to talk to.

"I don't see why not," Ruffnut answered, "Belchus just told us to find wood, but why would we ever do what he says? Besides, I would want company too if I only had my brother to talk to." Tuffnut glared at her for this last comment.

They started off, Astrid and Hiccup walking side by side, while Ruffnut pulled her brother over to her. As she supported him, Hiccup couldn't help but notice her lean in and whisper something to him. Tuffnut's eyes widened and he whispered something back, but Ruffnut shook her head. Hiccup desperately wished in that moment he could hear what they were saying. Instead, he turned to Astrid who was keeping a keen eye out for anything she could kill and was edible.

"Do you see anything, Hiccup?" she asked.

Hiccup shook his head. "This forest is so weird," he observed, "Ruffnut and I haven't found anything that could be used for well, anything."

"I still don't understand that," Astrid replied, shaking her head, "How come you guys can't find anything? Tuffnut and I have found a bunch of stuff." She leaned down and pulled something from her boot. "See this dagger? I just found it lying around."

Hiccup stared in surprise as she continued pulling out random objects she had found. As she did, she handed them to Hiccup.

Meanwhile, Ruffnut was starting to fall behind a little as she supported Tuffnut on her shoulder. She also wanted to make sure Hiccup and Astrid couldn't hear them talking. She looked at her brother, who looked like he was in massive pain. Not that Ruffnut cared.

"Are you ok?" she asked him, trying to sound concerned.

"Not really," Tuffnut muttered, "My ankle is hurting like crazy. Stupid Sandy dropping a tree on me."

Ruffnut scoffed at him. "How do you know Sandy had anything to do with it?" she asked, skeptically, "Trees probably fall in these woods all the time."

"Except he told me and Astrid that he cut the tree down so it would fall on us," Tuffnut pointed out. "And if you don't believe me, you can even ask Astrid."

She didn't believe him, but she also had no intention of asking Astrid. Ruffnut didn't want her brother to be right about something.

They walked for a while in silence when suddenly there was the sound of twigs snapping as something came closer. Astrid stopped, holding up an arm to stop Hiccup and pulled out an ax while Ruffnut did the same. The two held their axes defensively while staring into the bushes where the sound had come from. Astrid raised her weapon to strike, but stopped herself when Snotlout and Fishlegs emerged.

"Hah! See Fishlegs? I told you we weren't lost!" Snotlout bragged, unaware of the dangerous weapons pointed at him.

"I never should've doubted you," Fishlegs replied sarcastically, rolling his eyes.

"Snotlout, what are you doing here?" Astrid asked in an exasperated voice while putting her weapon away, "Your cabin is several miles that way." She pointed towards his cabin.

"We got lost," Fishlegs told her.

"No! No we didn't," Snotlout put in hastily, "I, er, just got a little turned around, that's all. Yeah, we were looking for food, and I got a little turned around."

"And then we got lost," Fishlegs added.

"We weren't lost!" Snotlout snapped at him.

"Sounds like you were lost to me," Hiccup said.

"Nobody asked you," Snotlout muttered. Trying to look dignified, he strode over to Astrid. "So, what are you doing out here in these woods all by your lonesome? Come to find me?" He raised an eyebrow at her.

Astrid gave him a very annoyed look. "In case you haven't noticed, there are three other people here," she said, indicating Hiccup and the twins, "Second, go stand over there." She gestured to a spot about twenty paces away.

Dejected, Snotlout did what he was told.

"So, uh, since we're all here, should we continue looking for supplies together?" Fishlegs asked, hopefully, "Surely there's no rule against that, right?" It was quite obvious that he didn't want to risk getting lost in the forest alone with Snotlout again.

Hiccup couldn't but smile a little. "I don't see why not," he replied, casting a quick glance at the twins to make sure they didn't object, "It might make it easier that way."

Since they were all in agreement, the six of them headed off into the woods once more.

I think I'm gonna end it there for now. Next chapter I'm going to wrap up this challenge so I can move on to something else.

Again, I'm sorry for leaving. But I'm back now. I'm updating a lot of my stories, so look forward to that! As always, R&R!

Also, props to anyone who knows where the title of this chapter came from.
