I just saw Tangled tonight for the first time. I just had to write something! This is probably the darkest thing I've ever written, and I write about death a lot! It's strange-I'm a very happy person with no suicidal thoughts...
WARNING: This does not have a happy ending. Flynn/Eugene does not get revived and Rapunzel does not have a happy ending either. Both die. You have been warned.
Disclaimer: I don't own Tangled. :'(
Rapunzel held Eugene Fitzherald's head in her hands, trying to keep him from dying. She frantically tried to memorize the words to the song that would cause her magical hair to glow and heal him. She knew it was pointless because his last act was to cut her hair off and kill Gothel.
She pressed her cheek to his as she tried to remember the song. "Rapunzel," he said softly. She looked into his eyes, afraid of what he was going to say or do. His eyes began closing, but he fought with all his might to keep them open.
"Yes?" she asked him, trying to remain strong and will him to live.
"You were my new dream," he said.
"And you were mine!" she replied, finally letting the tears fall.
Eugene began to try and say something else, but he couldn't fight the pain anymore. He allowed his eyes to close and slowly exhaled, the memory of the woman he loved engrained in his brain as everything else disappeared.
"No!" Rapunzel cried. "Eugene!" Her tears ran down her cheeks; she couldn't stop them. One fell onto his face as she struggled to remember the song, hoping that it might save him.
But it was too late.
He was gone.
Rapunzel knew she couldn't go on without him. She allowed herself to stay with him for a few moments. Finally, she knew what she had to do. After all, her mind had been made up since she realized that she loved him.
She carefully lifted her head and looked at his face. Eugene "Flynn" Fitzherald was beautiful in death. He was always beautiful. She slowly dropped her head and kissed him. Her lips lingered there for a few seconds, but it was pointless. He was dead.
Rapunzel knew she should move him so he wasn't still in that huddled slouch against the stairs. If she still had her hair, she could have moved him easily. Rapunzel didn't want to accept the fact that he was gone, and couldn't bear to move him, so she pulled him up to a lying down position and folded his hands over his chest. He could be sleeping, she thought to herself.
Slowly, Rapunzel stood and took a look at the man she loved. She gathered up her brown hair that was spread around the floor. Rapunzel walked to the center of the room and tossed her hair around the rafters above, looping it into a knot.
Ironic, she thought, He was supposed to be hanged and I probably would have been killed by Moth—no, Gothel. And now he's stolen my fate, and I've stolen his.
She knotted her hair into a noose. Rapunzel climbed up the hair onto the beams above. She pulled up the noose and placed it around her neck. She looked down at Eugene—the man she loved with all her heart.
Rapunzel closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and stepped off the beam.
Sharp pain.
Darkness.
And then she was with Eugene.
