Light closed the door slowly.
He had done all he could to avoid coming upstairs, so much so that his sister was getting suspicious.
He told her he just wanted to spend more time with his family but that wasn't even close. Still, he couldn't really tell them that there was a psychotic ghost in his room who wanted to kill him.
He took several deep breaths, ignoring Ryuk's laughter.
"Still scared of the corpse, eh Raito?"
Light glared at him.
Ryuk didn't understand, Kayako was afraid of him. He wasn't at risk from being haunted. It was only Light who had to suffer her insufferable taunting.
He sighed, walking over to his desk, opening his laptop and switching it on.
"CRRROOOAAAKKK!"
Light froze, turning slowly... and almost jumping out of his skin to see her stood there beside him!
He tried to back away, stumbling over the carpet and only just avoiding banging his head on his bedside table. He lay there, unable to do anything else as Kayako began to slowly crawl up his legs, staring at him with those wide black eyes... those strangely beautiful black eyes.
Light had no idea where the thought had come from but now that he considered it, Kayako was quite beautiful. Despite the unnaturally pale skin and her slightly disfigured neck, she had managed to retain her attractive features from life. As he watched her move closer and closer to him, he couldn't help thinking there was the slightest trace of grace about her motions. What the hell was wrong with him? One moment he was freaking out about this girl and now he was admiring her physique. His thoughts had been lost so completely in this strange revelation that when her face was barely an inch away from his, Light leaned forward and... kissed her.
Almost immediately he pulled back, shocked at himself.
It took him a few moments to notice that Kayako had froze, blinking slightly in surprise. Light could feel himself blushing, what had got into him? Why had he done that? Why was he...
As he felt the cold lips touch his own again, he stopped thinking and lost himself in the sensation, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her closer to him. Occasionally Kayako's neck cracked as she moved but they ignored the sound. They both closed their eyes as the kiss deepened.
Light had lost Shiori and though it was his own choice, he did regret not having her with him anymore.
Kayako had been betrayed by the man she thought she loved, the man who was supposed to protect her.
Although both lived their lives among the deaths of others, there was a deep whole in their hearts, a loneliness and longing.
As they lay together in a passionate embrace, they were no longer a god of justice and a cursed spirit. Neither were they a college student and a married woman.
They were simply a boy and a girl who needed love and by some miracle... they had found each other.

Ryuk watched the display with fascination, hovering above them slightly.
"Humans are strange... dead or alive." He muttered to himself, noisily biting into the apple that Light had left for him.
