"Hello, everyone!" Excitedly, I waved at the audience as I wore a white shirt along with another one of Mini's fancy skirts only with Paris imprinted on the front. "You're watching 'Question Corner', and I'm your host Kale." Taking a few steps to my left, I said, "Today we have with us Clone Force 99, or, as you all known them, the Bad Batch! Please put your hands together for Hunter, Tech, Crosshair, and Wrecker!"
Dramatically extending my arm out to point to the four troopers coming in, the crowd broke out in cheers for the troopers. However, as they strode in with their chests puffed out in pride, I noted Crosshair's sniper rifle still attached to his back, and Hunter with his twin blasters still in their holsters. I mentally sighed. Day one of the reopening to 'Question Corner', and our guests were already able to get past security with their weapons still in hand.
Coming up to greet them, I smiled as I extended my hand out to each of the Bad Batch members. However, when I shook hands with Hunter and Crosshair, I said in a quiet tone, "I guess parting with your weapons was not an option, then?" I gestured to the blasters on their persons with a smirk.
Wrecker beat Hunter to the punch when he blurted in a not-so subtle voice, "Ha-ha! They weren't about to part me Tan-Ta!" He unsheathed a commando knife from his leg and drew it close to my face. Hesitantly, I tilted my head away from the blade that was now being pointed directly in my face. Given my past history, I was not too fond of weapons invading my space.
The audience gasped at the sight of Wrecker's knife, and I quickly gave a meek smile in hopes to ease the sudden tension that was beginning to build. "I think you scared the Little Lady, Wrecker." Hunter said as he took off his helmet and tucked it under his arm. With his helmet off, I was now able to see the amused look on his face, and it made me feel somewhat more at ease. Wrecker, oblivious to my standoffish behavior until now, withdrew his knife and re-sheathed it. The muscles in the back of my shoulders uncoiled with relief as I watched the threatening knife be put away. "Not trying to hurt you, Little Miss." Wrecker chuckled, "Tan-ta only hurts who I want her to hurt."
"For the record," Tech butted in as he lifted his hands to show he was without his usual dual blasters, "I, at least, obliged the rules of your establishment."
"Thank you, Tech." I smiled kindly to the trooper, "But, I should have known better than to ask the famous Bad Batch to do this interview unarmed." Gesturing to the couch set up to the left of my chair, I said, "Please, have a seat."
All of them began to take off their helmets now as they went to sit. Hunter sat in the seat closest to me while Crosshair sat on the far end of the couch. Judging by how un-entertained Crosshair looked, more so than usual, I figured that this interview was likely not in his good books. Reports on Crosshair told me that he wasn't much of a talker, so an activity that involved him chatting didn't sound like something he would like.
Taking the 'Question Corner' cards off the table, I began to shuffle them as I leaned back in my own chair. "It really is an honor to have you guys on the Show. I must say, though, I didn't expect you guys to say yes when we contacted you guys."
"Eh, we've seen a few of your showings on the holoscans. We were pretty impressed with how you handled that pirate take-over."
"Even though the probability of your survival was extremely low." Tech said.
"Wow," I was taken back by the notion of what I was hearing, "I didn't know you guys were fans of the show." I was about to express my gratitude towards their liking of the show when Crosshair interrupted. Taking the toothpick out of his mouth and rolling it between his fingers, he said nonchalantly, "I wouldn't deem us as fans, Miss Kale."
"Nah, we like to turn on your show and have it playing in the background just in case any action happens!" Wrecker gave his knee a good smack as he bellowed a laugh.
Trying to hold a look of unamused, I found myself smiling as I plucked a card from the 'Question Corner' deck, saying "Well, at least you guys can say you're all fans of the action? Ah, maybe we'll make you guys fans of the Show when the interviews over." I nodded to the card in my hand, "Shall we began?" Pleased with themselves, the Bad Batch nodded their consent and so I began, "First question is from Weathergirl17248 who asks, did you ever wish you were a "normal" clone (no offense), or are you happy being yourselves, and being different?"
Taking the card and placing it on the coffee table, I looked at the Bad Batch squad expectantly as I awaited their answer. It was Wrecker who spoke first, "Ha! No way. Those regs have nothing on them that we'd want. Right, Hunter!" He threw a punch into Hunter's shoulder, which looked like it hurt, but the team leader made no signs of pain from the forceful blow.
Glancing a smirk at Wrecker he said, "We may be mutants, but we're genetically better than your average clones." He leaned back into his seat and refolded his arms, "You wouldn't find me asking to be normal. What about you, Tech? You tired of being exhaustingly smart?"
Tech, who had the best posture of the entire group, I noted, gave Hunter a quick nod, "Can't say I am, Sir." None of them, I noticed, bothered to pull Crosshair into the conversation. Leaving their brother to sit quietly at the end of the couch. I decided to look at him directly with raised eyebrows, asking him with my eyes if he felt the same ways as his team. He only gave me a half shrug before pulling his sniper rifle off of his back to examine it. Noticing something on the blaster, he pulled out a grey rag and started to casually whip the weapon down. Part of me felt thankful that I interviewed the entire Bad Batch as a team and not individually. Pulling anything from Crosshair could have gotten difficult if I was left to talk with him alone.
"Okay then, our next question is from captainrexbest35. She asks Hunter, "Do you enjoy searching for things by smell?"
Hunter raised a brow as though caught off guard, but soon smirked. "It gets the job done I suppose. I enjoy being accurate one hundred percent of the time. But smelling to search for things? Can't say I really put much thought into it." He shrugged with his right shoulder, "Maybe, yes."
"Next question is from JediChick101, who asks, "Whose idea was it to paint the portrait of Senator Amidala on the side of your ship, and is there any reason why it's her in particular?"
"That was my idea!" Wrecker punched his thumb against his chest as he said proudly and loudly, "We'd been checking her out for a couple of months on the Holoscans when I figured it was about time to show a little gratitude to our girl."
"Were you the one who painted her on there, then?" I asked, curious as to who was the artistic one on their team. "Or did you guys pay someone to do the nose art?"
Tech answered, "Actually, that would be Crosshair," He gestured to his brother who only glanced up for a second before going back to whipping down his gun. "He won't admit it, but his hand-eye coordination doesn't just stop with blasters. He has proven to be quite capable with a paintbrush."
"Was there a reason why you guys fixed your sights on the Senator?" I tried to restrain a smile at the notion that the Senator of Naboo might be watching this right now. I'd have to make sure I didn't push this question too far so as not to offend her.
Hunter replied, "Eh, our girl knows how to fight. She's not just tough in the political arena, but in an arena that might involve a blaster as well."
"Not to mention good lookin'." Upon this statement, Wrecker smacked Tech on the back only to make the trooper look up at his tall brother with an unamused glare. Warning him with a glare to put more restraint in his friendly punches. Afterwards, Tech commented, "As Hunter has stated, she is quite capable in the political arena. I'm impressed with her ability to think so quickly on her feet."
Placing the card on the table, I concluded, "Whether it's physical or mental, Senator Amidala definitely has admirable traits in both categories." changing the subject before I'd get an angry message from the renowned Senator Amidala herself, I read the next card "Next question is from Drmethilon, who asks, "Since you guys are known as an elite task force of the Republic, does that put you on the same level of Republic commandos? Or you are even better than commandos?"
For what felt like the first time in the entire interview, Crosshair nonchalantly took out his toothpick and lifted his eyes off of his sniper rifle, "We may be on the same level as commandos, but commandos are not on the same skill level as us."
Eager to actually hear Crosshair speak without being asked to, I was almost disappointed when Hunter took over to explain what his brother meant. "We're commandos alright, but we're genetically modified to be better than your average regs."
"The numbers don't lie." Tech jumped in with his facts, "While reg commandos have a high success rate for accomplishing their missions, we have yet to even need a success rate. Meaning we've yet to ever face a mission we couldn't complete."
"Or smash!" Wrecker threw his closed fist into his open palm, "Ha-ha!" This earned him a laugh from the audience, and I couldn't help but let out a chuckle myself at the commando's enthusiasm for his job. Wrecker smirked at the attention he was currently receiving. Being the center of attention seemed to be his favorite position on the team as well as on the Show.
"Okay, Mandalore the freedom asks Hunter, "Were you trained by any of the members of Cuy'val Dar? More specifically, a female Mandalorian bounty hunter named Vhonte Tervho?"
"Vhonte," Hunter's lips quirked into a lopsided smile, "We haven't heard from her since she retired."
"So then you were trained by her?" I asked.
"In a certain medium, yes." Hunter removed one of his twin blasters from their holsters and nonchalantly chucked the weapon in the air. Letting it twirl twice before forcefully catching the blaster and pointing it directly at me. He pulled the trigger. I flinched as the sight of blue laser suddenly filled the focal point of my vision. Squeezing my eyes shut, my immediate thought was that I should have pushed the 'no weapons on set' rule a little more forcefully.
Several seconds past, and all I felt was my intense heartbeat bounding rapidly against my chest in distress. I didn't get any sense of intense burning inside my body, nor was there any smell of scorching flesh hitting my nostrils. Daringly, I took a peek only to find my 'Question Corner' card now had a hole in it. Opening up my other eye, I glanced at the audience and saw all of their shocked faces. The crowd looked the same way I felt. "Do you see how dangerous this job is." I said, with furrowed brows. What disturbed me the most was that the card was almost in direct line with my upper shoulder, and I could barely feel the grazing warmth of the laser on my skin.
"Jango Fhett taught us most of what we know, but Vhonte specialized in dropping by to teach us how to properly shoot twin blasters. She argued that she was better on the subject." As Hunter continued to explain, I placed the burnt card on the coffee table as I unconsciously rubbed the curve of my shoulder. The spot that was nearly touched by a laser.
"Good old, Vhonte." Wrecker beamed, "She was a top shot. Even gave Crosshair here some pointers."
"New rule," I said, not really listening to their answers, "No more shooting the host."
"Technically," Tech pointed out, "Hunter didn't actually shoot you, Miss Kale."
"Good point, Tech." I rubbed the bridge of my nose, feeling a headache start to come on, "No more shooting in the general direction of the host. Or in any general direction at all. In fact, I think it's safe to say there should be no more shooting on this ship. " Suddenly becoming wide-eyed, I said, "Hey, where did that laser land anyway." I angled myself, so I could look back stage only to see Ashley, our manager, looking rather peeved. Her clipboard now had a burning hole sizzling through the middle that could match the color of her flushed face.
She reared her ugly glare at me, and I slowly, inch by inch, turned back around to face the Bad Batch again. "You know what...that's not an important question right now. Where was I? Oh, yes, well our last question is from captainrexbest35, who asks Crosshair, why are you so grumpy?" Widening by eyes, I wish I could have taken the question back but it was too late for that now.
Hesitatingly, I looked up from the card, but I was shocked to find Crosshair's head slightly tilted forward and his eyes closed. His chest had a slow rhythm to it, indicating sleep. Jaw-gaped, I was partly shocked that he slept through Hunter shooting me and partly thankful that he didn't hear the question that captainrexbest35 had asked. At least, I was until Hunter rolled his eyes and told Wrecker to wake their brother up. I opened by mouth to protest, but Wrecker had only reached over with his long arms and smacked Crosshair on the back. "Up, Crosshair! The Little Miss was asking you why you were so grumpy all the time." They were going to be the death of me...I just knew it.
Fixing a glare on me, Crosshair asked me, "Do you really want to be asking me that, Miss Kale?"
Eyes as wide as dinner plates, I slowly shook my head and placed the card down on the table as though it had already been answered. Pouncing from my seat just a little too eagerly, I said, "Well, thank you guys so much for coming on the Show!" I went to shake Crosshair's hand, but he just fixed me with an unamused glare as he placed back on his helmets.
"Ah, don't let him get you down." Hunter grabbed my hand and shook it firmly as his other hand gripped my shoulder. "To answer the question, I think it's because he never gets a good nights sleep." Smiling kindly, I nodded my thanks as Crosshair jabbed his elbow into Hunter's side.
"Thanks for having us on the Show, Little Miss!" Wrecker suddenly engulfed me into a bear hug that couldn't be escaped from. The thickness of his arms covered half of my torso, and, while I was pathetically crushed under his grip like a ragdoll, I patted his arm thoughtfully. However, when he finally relinquished me from his death grip, I heard something crack. I wasn't sure what bone did, but something definitely cracked.
Suddenly, Tech popped out of nowhere and handed me painkillers that he had kept handy in his pockets. He said, "You'll need these for tomorrow," When I was about to turn down the offer, he pressed the painkillers firmly into the palm of my hand, "Trust me on this, Miss Kale." Tech gave me a look that told me he had experience in this department.
Smiling up at him, I took the painkillers and placed them in my skirt pocket before I shook his hand and said goodbye. They left the stage with the audience cheering their wake until they couldn't be seen anymore. I turn to the camera and say, "Thank you, everyone, for watching 'Question Corner'. Next time, we'll have Captain Rex on the Show. Remember the rules: No M-rated questions and check the reviews to make sure that your question hasn't already been asked."
