Chapter 17
For Katherine, her first rock concert was a new experience. She had never been to any concert before, or listened to anything that resembled muggle rock. Not even wizard rock, no, her mother had forbid it. So as she stood there with Sirius, James, and Lily as they watched The Who rock out the stage, she felt completely out of her element. As the guitar shifted from a loud and angry sound to a much softer one, she felt Sirius' arms wrap around her from behind. Brushing his lips against her neck she couldn't help but get lost in not only his arms but the music as well. It seemed perfect as Sirius slowly began to sway with the music, tightening his grip on her.
"You sure you're ok?" He whispered into her ear.
"Great." She answered, glancing up at him, "This is great. I've never done anything close to this before."
"You're great." Sirius murmured into her neck as the drums joined in with the song followed by the piano.
Soon the vocals were added into the song and as she listened she realized the song wasn't meant to be a soft song, in fact it was actually a faster pace song, but as the artists manipulated the instruments; it turned into a softer song.
She felt Sirius continue to kiss her neck softly, "How do you like them?" Sirius asked into her ear.
"They're great."
Sirius laughed and nuzzled her, "That's your word today isn't it? Great."
She laughed with him and relaxed a bit more into his arms. Glancing over to her right she saw that James had his arm wrapped around Lily's shoulders and his head resting against hers as they swayed together. "James and Lily are going to get married." Katherine voiced softly.
"Yes." Sirius confirmed, "They are."
"They seem so right together." She squeezed his arms as he tightened around her, "They fit together."
"Yes they do." Sirius agreed, "Balance one another out."
"Yeah." Katherine nodded, "Exactly."
As the song picked up tempo just a bit more, she felt Sirius drop a line of kisses down her neck and back up to her ear where he nibbled softly on it. She found herself relaxing more and realized that like the song, Sirius could be fast and slow, hard and soft. Sure he had his loud angry moments, but he also had the soft soothing ones like the one he was having right now. She liked that he could be two different things, he wasn't just an angry rock song or a sappy love ballad, he was both.
She had turned her head softly to catch his lips with hers and ultimately did a 180 in his arms. They shared another kiss, Katherine being the one to deepen it this time. She felt Sirius bite her bottom lip softly when he was tapped on the shoulder. The couple parted to see a muggle that had been standing to Sirius' left holding out what appeared to be a glass tube. "Wanna hit man?" He asked them.
"No thanks, mate." Sirius shook his head and waved the guy off before he returned to his group of friends with a shrug.
"What was that?" Katherine asked as Sirius returned his hands to her waist.
"Cocaine." Sirius answered as the song began to wind down.
"Co—what?" She questioned as he slid his hands to her hips.
"Crack cocaine." Sirius explained, "A muggle drug."
"Drug?"
Sirius glanced down at her as a new song started, "Yeah. A drug. Muggles use it to make them feel differently. It's not a good thing."
"Have you ever done it?"
"No." Sirius answered, "I haven't done that."
Sensing that he wasn't sharing everything she looked up at him, "What have you done?"
His eyes shifted down to look at her and he shrugged lightly which she frowned, "So drugs are bad."
"Yes."
"What drugs have you done?"
"They aren't really drugs."
"Aren't really?" She repeated.
Sirius sighed, realizing he had said too much, "I've smoked before."
"Smoked? Like cigarettes?"
"How do you know about cigarettes?" He asked with a soft smile.
"Lily explained it to me while we were in line. There was a muggle smoking in front of us," She explained, "Lily says they're bad."
"They are."
"Then why do you do it?"
"I don't do it." Sirius answered back, "I've done it before, but I don't continue to do it."
She looked at him, "What else?"
"What else?" He repeated.
"Is that all you've done?"
"No."
"What else?" She repeated her question.
"I've smoked other things."
"Like?"
"You wouldn't know what they are." She frowned at him and he sighed as he dropped his arms from around her, "I've smoked pot before."
"Pot?"
"Marijuana." Sirius continued, "It's a drug you can smoke."
"So it's bad."
"Not as bad as the others." He answered.
"Then why did you do it?" She asked and he simply shrugged, "They pass it around at the concerts, James and I tried it one time."
She searched his eyes and he sighed, "You smell that?"
She shook her head, "Smell what?"
"The smell that doesn't quite seem right? Yeah? It smells a bit like fruit and a bit like a skunk." Sirius explained, "That's pot."
She was quiet for a few minutes and she turned her head to the left, as the smell grew more and more distinct. Realizing that what Sirius had said about it being passed around was true, she saw the guy next to Sirius put it to his lips and inhale.
The guy handed it to Sirius who held it out to Katherine. She looked at it and saw that it looked nothing like the previous drug; instead it was wrapped in parchment of some sort. She looked up at him as he handed it to James who handed it to the person next to him who took it between his lips.
"You don't do it anymore." Katherine asked him.
"No." Sirius answered back as he looked down at her, "I don't."
She nodded and then turned her attention back to the stage. "Katherine." Sirius murmured as he grabbed her and pulled her closer to him, "I didn't know it was a big deal. It was a one-time thing. It's the 70's, everyone does that kind of stuff."
She nodded as the crowd went wild as another song ended. "It's almost over." Sirius explained to her as he kissed her softly.
She nodded and turned her full attention to the stage as the drummer crashed his sticks against the high hat.
