Nothing

To him that watches, everything is revealed.

And since he had watched for an entire year, he knew it was true: beyond physical pain, Sam felt nothing.

Nil, nix, nada, null.

Zilch, zip, zippo.

Absolutely nothing.

Not joy or awe that he'd been freed from the cage.

Not shock at meeting a long-dead grandfather and long-lost cousins.

Not doubt that he had made the right decision under a blown streetlight.

Not loneliness or sadness for a life without Dean.

Not envy of the normal life his brother led.

Not regret for the year that was lost between them.

Not annoyance for the woman and kid that now held Dean's heart.

Not gratitude for the offer of a muscle car.

Not shame for using a baby as bait.

Not guilt for pulling his brother back into the hunt, into the life.

Not disappointment or frustration in their awkward, strained relationship since Dean's return.

Not optimism or hope that things would get better between them.

Not boredom during research or hours of surveillance.

Not anxiety before a hunt.

Not fear during.

Not satisfaction or pride afterwards.

Not embarrassment over what he paid for these days.

Not shock over snatched souls or stolen weapons from Heaven.

Not distress over an angel-crushed car.

Not hesitation about kicking in doors.

Not sympathy toward crying women or defenseless children.

Not worry for a turned brother.

Not confusion for how to play his part.

Not remorse for manipulation or lies.

Not relief for having to tell the truth.

Not helplessness under his brother's blows.

And best of all, Samuel thought, smirking as he followed behind Sam – not distrust or suspicion for those he thought he knew best.
