Life's Not Fair
Every day the sun sets, a new day begins somewhere else. And each day that ticks by, the closer I am to dying. This thing inside me, I know it's killing me, but I can't let them kill it.
I know it's not safe for me to keep it safe, but to me, it's murder to kill it. It would be selfish to let them kill it and me live. I can't deal with that. I'm having it even if it kills me. Literally.
"Hey," Rosalie said, sitting on the couch beside me. I smiled weakly at her and looked at where Edward stood talking to Carlisle in hushed voices.
"I wish they wouldn't whisper. I hate not knowing what's going on," I said, crossing my arms.
"Mutts," Rosalie muttered. I looked at her.
"What?" I asked. She shook her head.
"They're talking about the mutts," she said. I frowned and looked back at Edward, who was staring out the window.
"Why mutts?" I asked.
"Your mutts. Edward's worried about what they'll think," she said. I nodded and felt a pang. I wanted to see Jacob. I missed him like crazy.
"Bella? Can I talk to you?" Jasper asked suddenly. Everyone looked at him, including Alice.
"Uh, sure," I said.
Edward met my eyes before nodding at Carlisle about something and him and Carlisle disappeared outside while Emmett and Rosalie went upstairs. Alice stayed. I looked between them and then Jasper as he sat down next to me.
"You know about my past, correct?" he asked after a moment of silence. I recalled the story he had told me.
"Yeah, I remember," I said, glancing at Alice, who sat staring out into space.
"I've never seen-" I cut him off.
"Look, Jasper, if you're going to tell me that I shouldn't go through with this, then you might as well save your voice because I'm not going to do it," I said stubbornly.
"I know that, Bella, but I'm just making you aware that in all my years, I've never seen anything like this. None of us have. I just want you to be aware of what you're getting into," he said. Alice appeared by his side.
"We're with you, Bella, even if we're against what you're doing, we're here for you," she said, putting her hand on Jasper's shoulder. That had been the first time in a long time she'd spoken to me.
"Promise to drop it?" I asked, meeting each of their eyes. They exchanged glances.
"No promises, but we'll try," Alice said at last and immediately I felt joy come over me. I gave Jasper the coldest look I could manage.
"No fair," I said meekly and they smiled at me.
"Nothing's fair," Jasper said, squeezing Alice's hand.
"You're right," I said, sighing. "Nothing's fair."
