Para Comprender~

"Like, a year ago, in Spanish class."

Hoagie Gilligan and Abby Lincoln were the smartest kids in their grade. It wasn't a big deal, though, because he was a boy and she was girl. They didn't argue about it because they were both low-key. So, it was just a fact, a truth, everyone knew but didn't really think about. Hoagie and Abby both had strengths, but when it came down to it, they were pretty equally matched. Except in one class.

Abby grew up knowing French. Her mother was from France so her parents spoke it around the house. Naturally, she and Cree picked it up. Everyone told her that since she knew French, learning Spanish would be a no-brainer. It really wasn't.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, Hoagie only knew English and yet he just got Spanish. Abby would never willingly admit it slightly angered her, but it did.

The girl sat in her normal seat, second to last row, outside column. An excellent place to hide from teachers. Abby slouched at her desk, pulling her red cap lower to cover her face. The teacher was babbling, a fast-paced onslaught of meaninglessness to Abby. She only caught the Spanish for "paper" and "complete".

Hoagie sat in front of Abby, nodding his auburn-haired head like always. No doubt picking up every word of the lecture. Moments later, he turned around with a large grin and handed her a worksheet. "Gracias," she mumbled. Abby had an awful accent; Hoagie had a great one.

"De nada, mi cielo," the boy replied, playfulness in his eyes as he turned around.

The surrounding students giggled slightly. "Oh, Joaquin!" the teacher exclaimed.

Abby arched an eyebrow, having no idea what Hoagie had done to cause this outburst. He'd said you're welcome, right? He'd said something after… "mi cielo". The dark skinned girl frowned. Cielo meant sky. My sky? She pulled a slim green book out from under her desk, flipping through the pages with quick fingers.

Cielo did mean sky. That for sure sounded like Hoagie, but that didn't make it clear to Abby why everyone had laughed. Suddenly, the girl who sat next to Abby pulled the book from her grasp and flipped to a different page. The page read "Idioms" across the top. Abby's dark eyes followed the girl's ring-adorned finger until it landed on the phrase "mi cielo".

The same dark eyes rolled in a large circle as Abby read the accompanying definition, "a term of endearment, much like sweetheart".

Abby's head hit the desk. He just had to, didn't he?

A/N: So...the title translates as "in order to understand" and the line is from Juno. Love that movie. This is OK, I guess. I wanted it to be better.
