Chapter 1: ANTi THe FoRMuLa

From behind the counter, I watched the woman with long, flowing, pink hair. Her slender and nimble fingers danced upon the thread, spinning and smoothing and forming something within her grasp. I stared quietly at her, standing straight and tall, and tapped my boots' soles against the cold floor, causing a clacking noise to sound throughout the room.

The women with the long, flowing pink hair paused for a moment, and I stiffened, catching my breath as she slowly turned around. My heartbeat filled the room and it seemed too loud so that if it were any quiet, the woman would hear with no doubt. But once she faced me, the stones and crystals of her necklace smacking and hitting each other, her earrings jingling and her face completely apathetic and drained of emotion, my heart stopped.

My mistress.

"Rin," She spoke my name, and I immediately nodded.

Her voice was like petals. Flower petals. Soft, light, even, and as if they were falling to the ground—gentle and flowing. Her voice echoed in my ears and head, like ripples. That rippling sound—her voice.

"Mistress," I said, unsure of what else to say, and she walked over to me, her own boots clacking against the cold floor like mine had, the noise echoing in the room.

This room is far too big—it always echoes every single sound.

"Rin, it appears you need something. Is that correct?" she talked to me in her normal, sweet-like voice, but her expression has not changed. It was still emotionless.

I looked at her carefully, trying to mimic her face expression without doing so too drastically, and she tilted her head, smiling softly, her eyes smiling themselves.

"Is there a problem?"

I opened my mouth to speak, but nothing came out, except for a small, strangled-like sound coming from my throat. I grimaced at my stupid action and shut my mouth, pursing my lips slightly. Turning around, I brushed at my too-frilly and too-puffy skirt, fixing the black rose on the side of my head, and pulled the two ribbons so it became tighter.

I should tell her sometime soon.

"Nothing is a problem, Mistress." I said quietly, approaching the black, wooden door. I placed my hand on the doorknob, and turned to look at her.

Then she will understand finally.

"Is that so, Rin?" she asked me, smiling, and I narrowed my eyes.

"Yes." I said, barely a whisper, and she nodded simply.

"If you say so."

Then she will finally see how this all works, and in which it should be done.

I left the room and closed the door, leaning against it. I sighed.

There is a series of steps, you know.

"You have to follow them too." I whispered.
