Here's a real quick one-shot on Katniss & Gale, the uber cute couple :) Please let me know what you guys think!
He tilts his forehead down to rest against mine and pulls me closer. His skin, his whole being radiates heat from being so near the fire, and I close my eyes, soaking in the warmth. I breathe in the smell of snow-dampened leather and smoke and apples, the smell of all those wintry days we shared before the games. I don't try to move away. Why should I, anyway?
His voice drops to a whisper, "I love you."
My heartbeat quickens as soon as the words leave his mouth, and all of the blood rushes to my face in a huge gush of heat. Gale loves me. The corners of my mouth tug up into a small smile. I turn my face to the side a little, so that he can't see my expression.
"Catnip?" he whispers.
I bite my lip to try and hold back my smile.
"Say something," he says, pushing my stray hairs behind me ear. He actually sounds worried, like he thinks there's a slight possibility that I don't feel the same for him. How could that even cross his mind, after everything that we've been through? He must know that what Peeta and I have is a lie. Doesn't he?
I turn my face back around to look at him. My eyes travel over his face; his tanned skin, the dark hair falling over his piercing grey eyes, his strong jaw, and finally, his lips. This was the Gale I've known for years, but I am seeing in a completely different way.
Gale starts to pull away, having taken my silence as my way of telling him that I don't feel the same way.
"Gale, wait-"
"No, it's okay, Katniss," he whispers, the pain audible in his voice. He barely ever calls me by my real name. "I understand."
He keeps pulling away, but I grab both of his hands and pull him back over to me, a little too quickly. He trips over a root in the ground, and lands with his face inches from mine, breathing heavily. Even his breath smells like apples and winter. It's coming out in short gasps now, and I lean into him closer; feeling his breath warm up my frozen nose.
"Do... do you..." he starts, but I don't let him finish. I press myself into him until our lips are just barely brushing.
"Yes," I murmur, and kiss him with everything I've been holding in. All of my fright from the games, all of my worry of never seeing him again... I put it all into this one kiss, as if it is the last one that we will ever be able to share. With everything that has happened, though, I wouldn't be surprised if it is. So I make the best of it.
Gale grabs the hair at the back of my head, and pulls me in closer, if that's even possible. I slide my hands along his stomach and chest, smiling at the tight muscles that have developped there from all the years of hunting and running through the forest... our forest.
We pull away to catch our breath, and I look up at him to find the warmest smile I've ever seen on his face. Even when we'd catch an incredible amount of game, or we'd watch our younger sibblings playing together and looking completely at peace, I've never seen Gale half this happy.
"I love you," I murmur, wrapping my arms around his neck.
He smiles, and kisses my cheek. "I know."
I loved writing that... they're an adorable couple :') Plus, it was pretty cool using the, "I know." line. I wanted to choke Katniss when she said that during Catching Fire! :P
