Previously…
Placing her fingers to Felix's throat Chloe searched for a pulse. He couldn't be dead. He couldn't. As she pressed in just the right spot she felt it. His pulse. It was weak, but it was there. A glimmer of hope shot through her. She stared down at him and tried to figure out the extent of his injuries. The wound seemed to be in his abdomen and given how slow his pulse was, she was fairly certain it may be fatal. Reaching out she pushed down and began to apply pressure to the obvious gunshot wound. As soon as her hands were pressed firmly down Felix's eyes shot open and he cried out in pain. When his eyes met hers they went from shock to intense terror.
"No," he whispered.
"Felix," tears streamed down her cheeks as she kept her hands pressed firmly against him, "What happened to you?"
All it took was a one shuttered word reply from his bloody mouth and she begin to shake, "Trap."
Chapter 18
Chloe's blood ran cold and her head shot up to asses the large, seemingly empty room around them. Someone was there, someone who had shot her friend and left him there for her to find. Though aside from the near blinding light shining down in them and the bullet currently lodged in Felix's abdomen there was no sign that anyone else had accessed the warehouse in years. Maybe not even since Rick Flagg had brought Oliver here to torture him all those years ago.
Her eyes continued to dart to the far corners of the room as she kept her body over his, acting as a human shield. A low groan from below her pulled her attention from her surveying and she looked back down at her friend, "Felix? Felix, can you hear me?"
He coughed as he tried to sit up, but Chloe nudged him back down with a gentle nudge to his shoulder, "Don't try to move," she insisted. "Do you know who did this to you?"
"Waller… she's alive."
"No…" there was no way not after… "Felix, how is that possible? We… we killed her." Her voice was low and thick. No matter what that vile woman had done to them the idea that she had been the reason anyone had died still weighed on her.
"No." He coughed violently and blood began to drip from the corner on his mouth. "I killed her, or at least I thought I did."
"I don't understand. Felix, we watched her die."
"Did you really Miss Sullivan?"
Chloe's eyes shot to the woman who now stood a mere ten feet from them, her gun aimed and a vicious look in her eyes.
Felix carried her in the direction of the door. "Won't someone come for us?"
"I don't know who," he informed her with a shrug. "From what I've gathered, this little subdivision of checkmate has been closed for years. This entire thing was just a desperate attempt to prove that she was right… she's been desperate to prove her worth to her former superiors for a few years now,"
"I will come for you… the both of you." A weak yet still somehow still firm voice announced from behind them.
Felix stopped mid step and turned his firm gaze toward the woman on the other side of the room. Currently she was gripping the exam table beside her with what strength she had left and was attempting to pull herself to her feet.
"You'll never be safe. It may be a few days or possibly even months or years from now, but I promise you both your times will come. I will make you both suffer so much so that the last few years will feel like an extended vacation."
"Felix," Chloe whispered. She hated how week her voice sounded, even to her own ears, but the thought of Waller always being out there. The uncertainty, the overwhelming fear of being taken again, shook her to her core.
"I know." Felix lowered her to her feet and gave her a minute to fully steady herself. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I think so."
"Well, isn't this sweet? Still holding out hope, huh, Felix?" Finally fully on her feet but still needing the table to steady herself Waller continued her taunts. "Are you actually naïve enough to believe that you'll ever have a chance with her out there? The only real chance you had was while she was in here… away from him." She coughed harshly and stared Felix down.
"It was never going to be that way for us. She's in love with someone else and I accept that."
Chloe felt a huge knot of guilt form in her stomach. He was risking everything for her and she was hurting him.
"She could be though," Waller hinted, an obvious last ditch effort to turn him back to her side.
Behind Felix Chloe's eyes grew wide. What was she… she couldn't possibly mean.
"Come back into the fold Felix… and she'll be your reward. You can continue to be with her. No more restraints on your time together."
"No," he whispered a slight crack in his voice, "I'd never want her that way."
"Ah… it's true love then. Unrequited… but true. Too bad," she gave him a small shrug as her hand suddenly shot behind her back reaching for what he was sure was a gun before the violent shaking took over her body once more.
Felix walked toward her and rolled her to her stomach snatching the gun from her back holster. And raising it in the fallen woman's direction.
"Felix…"
"She'll never stop. You'll never be safe."
"You don't have to do this. We'll find another way."
He whipped his head in her direction, "There is no other way, Chloe. You heard her… she's never going to stop, not until were both dead."
"We'll find a way. You Do Not have to do this."
A look of relief flooded his features and he lowered the gun and tucked it into the back of his pants, "Let's go."
"I'm going to kill her." Waller gasped from the floor. "You haven't saved her today. You've just prolonged the inevitable, and when the day finally does come you'll be by her side forced to watch as the life drains from her eyes before I kill you too."
"You've lost it," Felix stared at the woman before him. She'd once been so focused and driven. Her main goal in life to protect her country. "What the hell happened to you?"
"That's irrelevant, now I think it's time you said your goodbyes."
'Felix," she repeated the terror evident in her voice. Staring at the barrel of the gun that the other woman had pulled from somewhere. Just as her finger tightened around the trigger Felix screamed out and they both watched in shock as Waller fell to the ground her eyes vacant and dead staring up at them.
"Oh God," Felix ground out as he stared at her empty eyes. "What have I done?"
"What you needed to," Chloe's voice was firm as she tried to make sure he knew there was no room for debate. She would never let him feel another moment of regret for what had just happened. She had made him stop from shooting the now lifeless woman when she was unarmed and had seemed beaten, but then her preparing to shoot them had changed things. He did what was needed to save their lives. It was self defense, plain and simple.
"It's over. It's finally over."
As soon as the words fell from his lips Chloe felt equal parts relief and guilt. It was finally over, but at what cost? He had killed for her, for them both of them really, but deep down she knew that he would have never done this if it wasn't for the way he felt about her. He had risked everything, and she would never be able to give him what he wanted most from her. Lifting her hand to her cheek she turned her gaze toward hers and stared deeply into his eyes trying to convey all she was feeling toward him.
'She was sorry.'
'He meant so much to her.'
'If things were different…'
He gave her a quick nod of understanding and looked toward the door.
"We have to get out of here." She said following his gaze.
"I know." He shook his head and turned fully away from the body of the woman who had controlled and tortured the for years. "Let's get moving."
"Agreed." Chloe smiled for what felt like the first time in years.
As he opened the door he could already hear the steady clamor of booted feet running towards them. "We have to move." He reached out and grabbed her hand, "Can you run?"
"I think so."
"Good, let's go."
As he took off at a fast pace he kept her hand clamped firmly in his and silently prayed that she'd be able to keep up.
"Aren't you going to ask, Miss Sullivan, "Waller questioned. "I know the curiosity must be killing you."
"How are you here…? How are you still alive?"
Chloe hated giving this woman what she so obviously wanted, but nothing made sense. She'd watched Waller die, seen the vacant dead look in her eyes.
"Let's just say that we have a mutual acquaintance. One who is incredibly skilled at all things… unexplained."
"Lex."
"He was very helpful Miss Sullivan," Waller continued. "Well at least his research was, It seemed that after his return to the living Mr. Luthor had some trouble remembering things. 'Complete and total loss of any and all established memories' is what I believe the doctors listed it as. "Luckily when Agent Mercer returned to us, even for that short time, she was required to give us access to all of her Luthor Corp files. Including Lex Luthor's little science experiments. I made sure to use that information to put in place contingency plans should anything ever happen to me, and those few that are still loyal to our cause made sure they were put into effect." Waller raised her gun and moved closer to them. "You see, he knew the truth. Those infected individuals are dangerous. Just look at what Felix became, and his gift seemed completely harmless at first."
"Having abilities doesn't automatically make you a threat." Chloe glared up at the woman defiantly.
"I disagree, which is why when I finally finish with the both of you I fully intend to do everything in my power to continue Mr. Luthor's work."
"You've gone completely insane." Chloe whispered.
"I prefer to think of myself as determined… to finish what I started and continue the research of a truly brilliant man."
Chloe stared at her in shock. What did that mean? Would she be reopening 33.1, and how would she accomplish it? How could she afford such a venture when she was obviously off the grid with the government? Did she have help, a backer? So many questions flew through her head.
"It really is a shame if you think about it." Waller stepped closer to them. "The both of you would have made such interesting test subjects." She pushed the barrel of the gun to Chloe's forehead. "Guess I'll have to hope that the autopsies give us some decent information."
As if finding an unexplained strength Felix managed to sit partially up and wrap his hand around Chloe's arm. H e used what little strength he had to pull her down to try once again to save her.
Pulling the gun back slightly, Waller stared at the pair in disbelief. "Why after everything and all this time are you still so desperate to save her? It can't possibly be because you're still in love with her. Not when she has never loved you… not when we both know who she's really in love with," Waller taunted. "She was with him tonight you know? You blew everything for her, Felix, and when I sent her that S.O.S. with your name on it she made sure to take the time for a long and romantic goodbye with him." Raising her gun again she began to move it forward but stopped suddenly and glanced ahead, "Isn't that right, Mr. Queen"
A/N Just a heads up. This story is very close to being over. I know a couple of chapters I said about 10 more but now it's looking more like 2 or 3. Thanks again for reading.
