Dorothy awoke to a sound of muffled pleas; she blinked one eye open then the other. As her eyes adjusted to the dark environment they were in she sat up and wiped away the sleep from her eyes. They were in the woods; Toto was sleeping soundly curled up next to the lion by a tree to her left. And scarecrow was resting by a log to her right; she smiled and noticed that someone was not there.
She stood up and looked around, being careful not to wonder too far into the woods and away from her friends. The tin man sat on a log a short way away from her and the others. His eyes were open and his joints were stiff, she rushed over to make sure he was alright.
"Tin man?" She asked softly. He couldn't turn his attention to her so he just muttered.
"Oy—ca—nn—oy ca—nn"
"Pardon?" She asked, straining her ears to get a better listen. He repeated his muttering again but this time more clearly.
"Oy—can- Oil—can" Dorothy gasped as she realised what he meant. She turned full attention to him and said.
"I'll be right back" He grunted in reply as Dorothy rushed back to her friends in search of the oil can. She noticed that scarecrow was holding it under his arms, she sighed – mostly in relief- to herself and moved closer.
She gently lifted scarecrows weightless arms and carefully slipped out the oil can. She rushed back to Tin man and oiled his mouth first. She helped him loosen his jaw and then placed a comforting hand on his chest.
"Oh are you alright" Tin man sighed and smiled as best he could.
"Oh I am feeling slightly better" Dorothy giggled a little and oiled his arms, legs, elbows etc...
"Have you been crying?" She asked looking at the wet stains under his eyes which must have rusted the rest of his body. He sighed.
"I'm fine Dorothy, you needn't worry about me" He smiled warmly, but falsely.
"Tin man? Please, what's wrong?" Her soft tone made him sway slightly in the cool steady breeze. He just realised he had been holding her hand, so he pulled away quickly.
"My apologies!" He burst out after releasing her. She shook her head.
"It's ok" She whispered.
"Dorothy? What if when we get to the wizard, he won't give me a heart?" He asked. Dorothy frowned slightly.
"Oh but he will! He must!" She urged him by grabbing his hand.
"What if I don't have the heart I need to... to?" He just realised what he had almost said and stopped dead.
"To what?" She asked.
"To love you?" He whispered and turned away. Dorothy's smile beamed at him.
"But don't you see tin man? You already have heart" She replied happily.
"No, no I don't I'm a tin man remember... All hollow" He banged his chest and listened to the echo. Dorothy gripped both his hands and pulled them to her chest.
"You have a heart because you love and care" She whispered. "And I feel both those things for you" Without a smile they both moved in close and the tin mans cold, tin lips smacked against hers. She smiled in her mind at the kiss but stopped when he pulled away.
"No, you deserve better than me, you deserve someone with a heart to love you more" He told her gently.
"No, I could not possibly find a man with more heart than you" She smiled and pulled closer. "I know you have heart" She rested her head on his chest. "Because I hear our hearts beating together." He smiled and when he heard the heart beat coming from his own hollow chest he gasped.
"You gave me a heart!" He exclaimed happily.
"No" She shook her head "You had a heart all along" She smiled and pulled him close. He kissed her neck softly and they both fell asleep in each other's arms.
Our hearts beat as one.
