Many purebloods put a thought into names; they wanted their children to grow up to reflect that name. The parents of Vincent Crabbe were no exception. They named him Vincent; they named him victorious. "You just wait," they told their acquaintances, "he'll grow up and he'll bring the Crabbe name glory." As Vincent grew older, though, they found they were mistaken. Little Vincent Crabbe failed all of his tests and could only speak jumbled, incoherent sentences. He was only accomplished in eating far too often and loyalty. Slytherins are not loyal, his parents scolded him. Slytherins are only loyal to the Dark Lord, but no one else; and certainly not classmates. Hufflepuffs are loyal; Slytherins are not.

He showed promise in his final year of schooling, though, in the unforgivable curses. Crucio was his specialty. His parents couldn't help but hope that he was finally living up to his namesake. When the final battle came, however, they received the news that their son was dead. Right before they were arrested, they were told their son was dead.

Vincent Crabbe never lived up to his name. Death was not victory. Failed classes and loyalty are not victory. Disappointing your parents is not victory. Vincent Crabbe was never victorious.

If you didn't catch on, the name Vincent means victorious.
