"Today," he read aloud as he penned the heartbreaking words, "he told her that he loved her, put a ring around her finger, and promised her forever together."

Severus was distraught. Today was Lily's wedding day. She had become Mrs Potter. Mrs James Potter.

As he wrote the words, they almost became too real. He could picture the ceremony, the smiles, the laughter that he would never be a part of. Lily was gone.

In truth, he hadn't had a chance with her since their fifth year at Hogwarts, but now all hope was lost.

"Today is the happiest day of her life. I should be happy for her," he said to himself.

But he couldn't be. Tears stained his cheeks as he dreamed of a different reality; one where Lily still loved him.

Ron stared at the letter in disbelief. He hadn't talked to Hermione since they had broken up, two years previously; or rather, since she had left him to pursue a Potions career. He didn't understand why she wanted to go back to Hogwarts, let alone with Snape. He had ruined everything the day he told her to do whatever the hell she wanted with the murderer.

Ronald,

I know this will probably come as a surprise, but someone had to tell you. I know it isn't really my duty, but I felt responsible.

Ron, I married Severus today. I love him more than anything. DON'T ruin this for me. If you feel like throwing a tantrum, I'm sure Harry will be patient enough to listen to your ranting.

Hermione Granger Snape

Today, he thought about the moment he could have said he loved her, and promised her forever together. It really hit him: she'd found a new beginning. Without him.

Severus looked at his wife. She was smiling radiantly. Today is the happiest day of her life, he thought, and the happiest of mine. The ring on Hermione's finger is the one I placed there. And for the first time in his life, he realized that he was eternally grateful that Lily had married James.
