Death the Kid found himself staring at Maka Albarn. Again.

He'd been staring at her a lot lately, and he couldn't figure out why. He didn't mean to stare at her, of course. A gentleman would never stare. However, whenever he was thinking about something else, he'd find his gaze drawn back to the scythemeister.

Kid didn't know why, so one day he tried to figure it out. Sitting at home on his couch (in the exact middle) he ran over the reasons why Maka would grab his subconscious attention and not his other friends.

Well, she was very friendly, but so were most everyone else he knew. Even Black Star had his own . . . special way of being a friend. When, of course, he wasn't trying to beat Kid in hand-to-hand combat and failing miserably. Yes, that boy had a long way to go to transcend God.

Back to the matter at hand. Maka was also a powerful meister in battle, but as a young shinigami himself, he invariably fought alongside the best meisters at Shibusen. Why should Maka be different?

She proved that she was extremely intelligent during the legendary test, coming out number one by several points. Kid shuddered to remember this test and his hideously asymmetrical writing. No, focus on Maka for a minute. Wait, scratch that. Focus on why she's interesting.

Asymmetry . . . the faintest spark of an idea flickered in Kid's mind for a minute, then vanished. It was probably just his OCD acting up again.

Anyway . . . Maka was an exceptional person, but everyone was in their own way. Wait. SHE was an exceptional person . . . could Maka's gender be distracting? No possible way. Kid didn't try to plan much of the future, but romance was definitely nowhere in sight, in his opinion. He was a shinigami. How could he have affection for a human?

Still . . . if it was affection, why Maka? She didn't fit the stereotypes of attractive women. Liz, Patty, and Tsubaki were all more . . . endowed than Maka. They had more curves, most of them were taller . . . older? Liz and Patty weren't sure.

But . . . the spark of an idea returned and brightened like a lamp being turned on. Maka was symmetrical!

Liz and Patty were Kid's weapons. He had no physical attraction to them outside of their symmetry as pistols, and couldn't get over their asymmetry when compared to each other. They also were too close to each other to approach romantically. Tsubaki had a yellow star on the right side of her dress only, no doubt the work of that fiend Black Star. Even without it, her ponytail invariably drifted to one side, and her bangs didn't bear thinking about.

Maka, on the other hand, was different. Her twin pigtails always seemed to be pulled up at the exact same height, and were the exact same shape. Her clothes didn't have any unnecessary designs to throw off their beautiful simplicity, and if her fighting style wasn't symmetrical, Kid could forgive that. His wasn't always, either.

He knew Maka didn't think of him as more than a friend. Oh well, that was fine for the time being. Soul would have probably tried to decapitate him if he approached Maka, anyway.

Still, romance in the future was looking more and more likely.
