Expressions
Eli did not lie. Not normally at least, not if it could be avoided.
But there were always times at which the truth simply couldn't be told, moments in which radical honesty would do nothing but complicate matters.
The fact that Lightman had seen right through his lies, even when he'd virtually drugged his face into impassiveness, was not comforting; especially not when he was standing in front of him without those pillows of safety and knowing exactly how his body reacted to the man. The reflex to lick his lips he could suppress, the expanding of his pupils he could not.
Seeing as Lightman was staring at him, virtually peering into his very soul, the man made the situation just more difficult for him and he couldn't help but stiffen, even if that would result in Lightman knowing perfectly that he was nervous.
Lightman cocked his head to the side and smiled like he always did when he'd just cracked a particularly difficult person.
"Relax, Loker," he drawled, leaning back in his chair and steepling his fingers in a picture of self-confidence. "I'm not going to eat you."
An, "I'm not so sure about that," slipped out before he could stop himself and for once he cursed his habit of always blurting out the first thing on is mind. Lightman on the other hand seemed to consider all that to be terribly amusing, if the way the corners of his mouth twitched was anything to go by.
Loker's next reaction was truthful to his feelings – even in body language he disliked hiding or falsifying things. Crossing his arms and drawing his eyebrows together he made the dismay he felt very clear.
Lightman was not impressed and just shook his head, still looking vaguely amused.
"Enough of that," he cut through the silence that threatened to smother them. "I know you want me, maybe even..." He trailed off, without ever finishing the sentence, and instead continued to ask a question. "What I want to know is whether you want me to ignore it, or…" he stepped closer to the younger man who was visibly conflicted (when had he gotten up anyway?), "or if you want to pursue what you're thinking about right now."
"I'm not-," Loker began, licking his lips and stepping back, only to be stopped by a wall. Lightman interrupted him before he could even finish that sentence.
"If you finish it, it's going to be a lie," he predicted, getting Loker to shut up and blush – not much, it was really just a hint of colour on his cheeks, but it was enough to be noticed by Lightman right away and it was enough to cause that irritating grin he always wore when he had just solved some mystery.
That was the moment Loker decided to give up trying to deny anything. If even his body seemed hell-bent on contradicting everything he said there was no way he could convince Lightman that he hadn't seen what he thought he'd seen.
"Don't ignore it," slipped over his lips before he could hold in those words, even if he knew that, had he decided to act as if this had never happened, nothing would have changed at work and they could have gone on as before.
As it was, his words prompted a softer smile to spread over Lightman's face. He wasn't sure what it meant, but something in that smile told him that he would get to know. And many other expressions as well…
