Just something to prevent writers' block. Plus, I've been itching to write a CharacterxReader one-shot thing for a while now.
Study Break
You set down your pencil with a sigh, frustration making you cross your arms with a huff. "Why does math have to be so hard?" you muse.
Shuichi, who is tutoring you, smiles. "Why don't we take a break?"
Standing up, you cross the room to your bed. Grabbing your favorite pillow, you hug it as algebraic equations run through your head. "I'm gonna fail this test…"
"No, you won't," replies Shuichi, voice calm and patient as he looks at you.
You meet his green eyes and frown. When he doesn't look away, you sigh and say, "I guess with you helping me, I can't bomb the test." You pause. "How do you do it? Getting all straight A's, I mean? You must study like crazy."
"Some things come more naturally than others," he answers.
"So you're saying you don't study?"
"No. I do, but not as hard as some."
"Like me."
He hesitates before replying, "You're good at other subjects, right?"
You nod. "Yeah."
"It's the same thing. I'm good at math, but have trouble with history."
You narrow your eyes with suspicion. "You seem the type who would have no problem memorizing dates."
"Do I?" he asks with a smile.
You look away, a slight pink spread on your cheeks. "I still think you're a genius."
You hear Shuichi shift in his chair. "Can't you just see me as a fellow student?"
You notice the hint of pain in his voice, and you look over to meet his somewhat sad eyes. You're blush deepens, and you feel a little guilty. "I-if you want me to," you stutter.
He smiles as he replies, "I would love that."
You hug the pillow closer to your chest, trying hard to fight down the blush. "Then I'll see you as a student who has to get good grades because his freedom depends on it."
He chuckles, and you can't help but join in. As the room returns to silence, you say, for the sake of a conversation, "Aren't you uncomfortable in that chair?"
He shifts as if to confirm your question, but instead says, "I'll be fine."
You shake your head. "Don't torture yourself, Shuichi." You pat the space next to you.
He hesitates, then sighs in defeat. Crossing the room, he sits next you.
"Better?" you ask.
He smiles, a bit embarrassed. "Yes. Thank you."
"No need for thanks," you reply, giving him a sideways smile. "And relax. I don't bite."
You see him visibly relax as he leans back, supported by his arms. His eyes travel the length of your room, and you nervously hug your pillow. He notices this and lowers his eyes.
"So, um," you say, frantically searching for a subject to talk about.
Shuichi is the one to find one. "What's your favorite animal?"
A bit taken aback by the random question, you hesitate before replying. "Um, well…I guess it would have to be a fox."
"A fox?" he repeats, slight surprise hidden in his voice.
You nod. "Especially white foxes. They're so beautiful." You give him a sideways glance, catching a smile that shows your answer means more than you think. "Is that weird?"
He shakes his head. "No, no, it's not. It's just…ironic." His voice drops to a whisper, as if he's talking more to himself.
You contemplate whether to ask him why it's ironic, but before you can say anything, Shuichi looks at you and says, "Let's get back to studying."
You sigh but don't object as you follow him back to your desk. Picking up your pencil, you listen carefully as Shuichi writes out an equation and says, "To do this equation, you have to…"
