"Don't let go of that one"
He was truly an awful friend.
He knew that James was in love with her and yet, he still fell for her. He hadn't thought that his friend would ever find out, but he should have known better. James, the person who figured out that Remus was a werewolf, would obviously eventually realize that his best friend was in love with Lily, too.
It wasn't like Sirius meant to like that flower. He was only a guy and couldn't help himself. But still, he could have tried harder to stop it from happening…
James wasn't mad like Sirius had expected him to be. No, he was the opposite and, somehow, that just made Sirius feel even worse.
"If you really like her I'll back off…," the raven-haired boy told his friend as they sat in the deserted Gryffindor common room. "She seems to like you more," he added as an afterthought.
Sirius groaned. This was not the way he wanted things to turn out. He could handle some yelling and thrown objects – he was used to that thanks to his home life. But no, James had to be, well, all James-ish about the situation and nobly give up the girl that he loved just so his friend would be happy. "No, don't do that. It was just a, errr, crush… Don't worry about it. She means nothing to me…," Sirius told him, trying his best to sound convincing.
"You sure?"
Sirius nodded as his heart yelled in protest.
"Pity and mercy do nothing for me"
"Sirius, I'm not kidding about this. I'll stop asking Lily out if that's what you want," Prongs offered again with an half-hearted smile.
Black shook his head. "Nah, it's fine. Really. You guys are like soulmates or something – like I said, I just had a stupid crush on her. It was nothing major."
James grinned widely and replied, "Thanks, Padfoot."
Sirius forcefully returned the smile. He knew that his friend really did not want to stop liking Lily. He was only offering because, to him, friendship was worth more than any girl, even the girl of his dreams. Although Sirius' feelings for Lily were more than a silly crush like he claimed, he knew that they could never even compare to James' feelings for her.
"I've got time to find
Mine"
Sirius lay in his four-poster bed, thinking about his actions earlier that evening when Remus walked into the dormitory. He took a seat on the edge of Black's bed and smiled solemnly down at him. "You did the right thing, you know?"
Sirius nodded his head, but didn't look his friend in the face. He knew that Remus would be able to tell that he was having second thoughts about his decision if he looked at him.
Lupin rested a hand on his fellow Marauder's leg and said, "You really liked her, didn't you?"
He sighed and knew that there was no way that he could lie his way out of the situation – Remus knew him better than he knew himself. "Yeah… I suppose I did."
Remus rose up from his seat and ruffled Sirius' dark hair. "You'll find that special someone someday – I promise." He went over to his bed and pulled out that evening's homework from his bag.
"And I'll find mine.
I'll find mine
I'll find mine"
Sirius smiled to himself as he thought about Remus' words. Maybe that someday would come sooner than either of them expected…
The lyrics that I used are from the song "I'll Find Mine" by Meg and Dia.
