Promotions and Paperwork

Shunsui Kyoraku hurried to the first division meeting hall, where he knew his Nanao-chan was currently being held. If the old man had done anything to upset her… He burst through the doors.

The head captain regarded his former pupil solemnly. He got straight to the point with no preamble at all. "Shunsui, it has come to my attention that your lieutenant's skills far surpass your own. We have given you every opportunity to correct this, but I am afraid I have no more choice in the matter."

Shunsui looked to Nanao, who stared back at him expressionlessly. "What is he talking about, Nanao-chan? Are you leaving me? Are you transferring squads?"

"No, Shunsui," the head captain replied. "I am giving her a promotion."

Promotion? "Wait, can't we talk about this, Nanao?"

"I am sorry, sir," she replied. "I just cannot stand it another moment."

"As of now," the head captain continued, "you will be answering to Miss Ise, Captain of Paperwork and Sake of Squad Eight."

"What does that mean exactly?" Shunsui asked, afraid to know the answer.

"You are still my captain," Nanao explained with a wicked smile on her face, "but I can give you orders with regards to those two areas. In other words, if you don't do your paperwork, I get to ban your sake. Permanently."

"NOOOOOOOO!"

…

Nanao looked up from the form she was signing. Her captain, asleep on the couch for several hours now, was thrashing and mumbling.

He must be having some nightmare, Nanao thought with a bit of concern. She stood from her chair to wake him.

"I'll do my paperwork, Nanao-chan. Just don't destroy my sake," Shunsui muttered in his sleep.

Nanao sat back down. It won't hurt to let him sleep a little longer.
