The Man with Eyes of Green

I went today upon my way to see what I could see

Each chiming step I took I leapt further than I've ever been

I cannot say what pulled my gaze away from flowering trees

But there beneath the scarlet leaves stood a man with eyes of green.

This man I said would be my friend a companion fine and free

I veered my course and I knew of course that he was not naive

His soul was pure though his past I'm sure was not so nearly clean

I laid my heart oh in his hands and he took a hold with glee.

Though fire and fog through marsh and bog we galloped merrily

To me he was my dear my love the only man for me

What foes that came fell to his blade and the flashing hooves that be

So there he stood with the will of good the man with eyes of green.

Now time would play with lives this way and paved with pain it be

For he grew old and I grew old this battles won slowly

When all was done we had but one final wish out to decree

I reached for he, he grasped for me and I took a hold with glee.

We went that day upon our way with eyes that no more see

Each gasping breath we took we wept for the end was near so sweet

I cannot say what pulled my gaze from above the towering trees

The bell that tolled, for the heart of gold, for the man with eyes of green.
