Welcome to the very first chapter of this novelization! I do hope you all enjoy reading as I will do my very best to make this a scary and fun experience. A disclaimer; Resident Evil belongs to Capcom, and this novelization is just for fun.
Outbreak Girl
It was a typical night at J's bar. Some uninvited guests crashed the party. Our race for survival was just beginning.
September 24th, 1998 -8:01 pm
Kevin Ryman is finally getting alcohol.
It has been an strange day, a somewhat quiet one in fact. There were no major emergencies, less paperwork, and he didn't even get yelled at by his boss. To celebrate, he decided to come to this bar for a night of drinking before going home. He is still in uniform, a specialized RPD vest. J's Bar is quiet tonight; only consisting at least a dozen people that includes the only two people that are working here. Most of the patrons look like they came to the bar straight from work, and he knows at least three who are frequent customers. He spots a young woman walking inside, heading straight for the woman's bathroom. He expected that this place would be a full house since today is game day at the Football Stadium, and patrons would gather to this place to watch the it on Tv. The night is young, and he really isn't worried about it. The bartender, Will; is behind the bar, cleaning a shot glass.
"It's a slow day today," Will said, sighing as he gingerly placed the glass underneath. "I was hoping that more people would come in, I hate it when we have days like these."
Kevin took a sip of his mug, looking at the bored bartender. "Yeah, I would think that people would come pouring in to watch the game." He mused.
"Yeah, I thought so too...but I guess people would rather either be at the stadium or watch at home." Will shrugs, "I'm filing in for Freddy tonight, he's a no show."
"Really? What happened?"
"I don't know, Jack told me that he just didn't show up for shift. In fact, Cindy told me that Shannon, Linsey, and Christa called in sick, which is why she is the only waitress on duty. Maybe they caught that sickness that has been spreading around."
Kevin understood, since early September, people started to become sick. He doesn't know much of the details other than this sickness is putting people in Raccoon General. All that is said is be careful when going outside and practice frequent hygiene, while an investigation is underway to find the cause. "What about Jack?"
"He came in, wasn't feeling so hot, but he had to open the bar. It has been two hours since i've heard a peep, hope he is alright."
Alyssa Ashcroft is doing research; tapping away on the keyboard as she remains focused on the screen. She didn't want to go home just yet, she needed a drink every once in a while to help with her work. She turns her head as soon as the TV in the upper corner displayed a news report. She listened in, as tonight's game is canceled because of a riot. Something like that doesn't happen often in Raccoon city, maybe some rowdy fans has gotten into the game too much. The papers would no doubt have this story by tomorrow, and she already has an assignment she has to finish.
Mark Wilkins is sitting at the bar counter, having this concerned look on his old face. His companion, Bob hasn't been feeling well during his shift at the security station, even though he insist that he is fine, but Mark doesn't buy it. When they sat down earlier, his friend hasn't said a word, or ordered anything, but his head is resting on the flat surface.
"Bob? Aren't you gonna eat anything?" Mark asked, He got no response so he tries again. "Bob, Where's your mind at?" This time, Bob slowly lifts his head.
"What?" Bob responds in a slurred speech even though he didn't drink. "Mark, has the game started yet?"
"Sorry Bob, the game's been cancelled." Mark replied. Bob just nod silently and lays his head back down on the counter, looking a little paler than usually. Maybe coming here wasn't such a good idea, it looks as though he needs to head over to the hospital. He will keep an eye on him, but he looks up at the Tv to see the news broadcast again, still talking about the riots. "So much for a peaceful evening..."
Jim Chapman is concentrating. The crossword puzzle that he has been working on for three days is almost complete. Ever since he was a kid, he is always tries to find ways to challenge his his mind one way or another. This crossword is advanced, but this is what he asked for, he pays for a monthly subscription for this. "Shit, man." He grunts, taking off his work hat to wipe his forehead, then placed it back on his blonde dyed low fade hair. He isn't really focused on what is going on around him, not even when the broadcast reports that the violence has spilled out on the streets.
David King is paying attention, and he believes things are becoming grim. Granted, he has never been in a situation when sports fans becomes violent, but it pays to be cautious. He gulped down the last of his drink, he then looks to the bartender. "Hey, I'll have another one." He simply said to Will. After this last drink, he'll just leave this place and go on home. He is responsible, he didn't need to become piss drunk since he has work in the morning as a plumber. Suddenly, he caught the scent of something that is a bit strange, a faint odor that made him cringe. What could be causing it?
George Hamilton is in a depressing mood, drinking a cold mug to dull his emotion, but it doesn't seem to work." Damn it..." He murmured. He looks at a piece of paper he is holding; as it is the cause of his grief among other things. The grim expression on his face changed when he caught a whiff of something foul. The front door slowly opens as a man came in, the smell has gotten stronger when the door opened and he presumes that came from the stranger.
Cindy Lennox almost dropped her tray after being frightened by a mouse moving along the floor, causing two glasses to fall and shattered on the ground into shards. This has gained Will's attention, and he moves towards her.
"Cindy, are you alright?" He asked her. She nods as she smiles towards him.
"Oh yes I'm fine." She said as she move to the front counter. "Will, would you hand me the broom and dust pan please?"
"I could do it, you know. We could switch places for a bit, I could sweep while you man the bar." He teased, which made her giggle a bit.
"That's alright, I'm horrible at bar tending. I'm sure I would be fired on the spot." Cindy said, feeling better. That quickly changed when there is a sudden funny odor in the air. "Do...Do you smell that?"
A strange man came staggering inside, standing at the entrance with his head lowered. His clothing looks to be tattered and his long shaggy hair obscure his face from view. The waitress felt that something about him is off, afraid to even approach him as he didn't move from his spot. Will walks up behind Cindy as he gently placed his hands on her shoulder.
"I'll handle this. Don't worry." He assures her before confronting the man. "Hey buddy," The man didn't reply. "Look, if you're not going to buy anything then I suggest you-" Before he finished, the man reached out his arms, grabbing the bartender's shoulders with his mouth exposed.
Yoko Suzuki puts down her scissors and stares at her reflection in the mirror. A few moments ago, she had long shoulder length hair, but now she has a short bob. She walked into the bar for a quick change, and thankfully the women's bathroom is empty for her to do it. She also placed contacts in her eyes so she would need her glasses anymore, placing them on the sink. Her thoughts are interrupted when he heard a scream from outside of the women's restroom, which made her heart jump in shock. Why is there screaming? What is happening out there?
"Oh dear sweet Jesus!" Jim instantly fell out of his seat and crawls backwards away from the barbaric scene. The strange man has suddenly attacked and used his mouth to rip off a huge chuck of flesh from the bartender's neck with his teeth. Everyone witnessed this senseless act of violence, and Kevin is the first to react.
"Hey, stop! RPD!" He warns the homicidal stranger, as he rushes over to pull the crazed man off of the bartender. He does so successfully, but the stranger turn his attention on Kevin and starts to snap his bloody mouth at him. Both of them struggle, but thankfully the cop is stronger. He gives a harsh push, making this crazed individual fly backwards outside of the bar. Since Kevin doesn't have handcuffs on him, the best he could do is to close the door and lock it. The guy outside is a danger to everyone on the inside, so this was the best course for now.
"Crazy bastard!" He grunts, then he quickly made is way over to Will, who is on the floor bleeding rapidly. "Oh shit, what did he do?"
"I am a doctor, I can help!" George quickly kneels right beside the bartender and looks at his neck. Kevin nods, as he left things to the doctor and went right to the bar's pay phone to call for emergency services.
"Oh my God, Will!" Cindy came at his side as well, Tears are coming down her face like a waterfall. "Oh God..." She doesn't know what else to say, a man suddenly attacked him, and now her colleague is on the floor in his own blood.
"Sir? You can fix this, right?" Cindy asked the man beside her, as she is greatly concern.
"This is deep." He said as he gives a diagnosis on the man's condition. "If we try to move him, he'll only bleed faster..."
"What the hell was that? Oh shit!" Jim exclaims, as he is scared out of his wits. He wants to get out of here, but the man is still out there.
"Dammit, are you kidding me?" Kevin hissed, as he is borrowing the wired phone at the bar to call the emergency number, but he cannot get through. The crazy man began to throw himself at the font door, trying to get in. The stranger is not alone, as there is a small gathering of people sprawling along the window, and pounding their arms on any surface they can. Kevin acted quickly, as he doesn't want these band of crazy people to break in.
"We have to block the door, use the barrels!" He said, as the heavy barrels might give them enough time. Mark thankfully thought of the same thing, and he goes over to use his strength to push one of them at the door while Kevin pushes the second one. It would hold the mob for a while longer.
"Cindy..." Will gasped in a weak voice while choking up blood."Key...to the back door...use it..."
The waitress have never been so scared in her life. She couldn't bare the thought of leaving him behind like this. Meanwhile, Mark is lifting his friend on his shoulder, Bob is not feeling well to walk on his own and he is starting to sweat.
"Work with me, come on Bob." It isn't easy dragging along someone who is slumping about, but he has to get him and his friend to keep up with the others. Jim runs over behind the counter, frantically trying to find the keys.
" Shit shit shit, where is it?" He shouted before he heard a scream coming from the bathroom. "What now!" He looks to the woman's bathroom where the source of the scream came from.
Yoko burst from the door and stops to take a few breaths. She is terrified when she saw a hand shot out of the door ventilation while she was inside. It was small, a full human body couldn't get through, but she left the bathroom finally, only to face something even more frightening. People outside are slamming their hands against the front window while the folks inside are barricading the door. She is too frighten to speak, but a man past her quickly to the back door, using the keys to unlock it.
"Hey everyone, the door is opened so let's go!" He made sure that everyone heard him; they don't have much time.
Cindy stood in her spot trying picking Will up from the ground. He grabs her hand and shakes his head. "Cin...go..." He implored her, even while he is in pain.
"No, no! I am not leaving you behind!" She wouldn't let him go as she attempts to carry him." W-we'll somehow get you to a hospital and everything will be alright." She wouldn't give up hope even in a situation like this. Will knows that he can't make it like this. She gives George and Kevin a pleading look, to help her.
"It...hurts..." He gasped, as he couldn't talk anymore as too much blood is pouring out of his mouth. He looks at her right in her eyes, before she saw his rolls back, and stopped moving.
She refuses to let go of him. It took Kevin to grab her shoulders to make her release her grip.
" Come on, we have to get out of here." Kevin said as he pulls her along. She looks back at him one more time before she went through the back door. She couldn't fight back the tears; it's too painful for her to think about what happened. A quiet, peaceful night has just turned into a living nightmare.
Staff Room
Everyone manage to escape from the ground floor and made it up the stairs to the first floor of the establishment. It looks like a spacious apartment living room with three closed door, a couch, a table, and a working small refrigerator.
They are in panic, they just witnessed a brutal murder, and are running for their lives from a group of crazed individuals that are trying to get inside of the establishment.
"What the hell was that?" Alyssa frantically asked, hoping for some kind of answer. No one can give her an answer, as they are probably thinking the same thing.
"Everyone, calm down," Kevin said, as he tries to keep the peace. "I don't know what is going on, but we have to stay together-"
"Calm down?" Jim interrupted with fear on his face. "How can you tell us to calm down? We just witnessed a man ripping another man's throat, and now a gang of lunatics is trying to get in to kill us!"
"Which is why we cannot panic!" The cop shouted at him, but lowers his voice to normal. "We need to keep going, we are exposed here. Cindy..." He turns to the waitress as she is in a state of distress, standing frozen right beside him. "Cindy, we need your help, do you know a way out of here?" He asked her as softly as he could, but it seem to have worked as she seems dazed, but snapped out of it.
"T-That leads to the liquor storage room, and there's a passage that leads to the roof." She answered softly. "We can use that to jump across the next building, the roofs are close enough for that." She said, as she walks to the door, but it's locked. Alyssa moves her out of the way, as she pull a metal lock pick and work on the door.
"Let me do this, it'll be faster." She said. the waitress didn't stop her. Cindy leans on the wall, trying to process what is happening. Will has been murdered right in front of her, and they are running for their lives. Across from her is a door that leads into her boss's office, and that is when she realized something.
"Wait...I forgot Jack was in today! I have to warn him!" She dashed towards the door, without thinking. Jack is more than likely inside, not realizing the danger that he is in. She has to see if he is alright.
Owner's Room
The Waitress swiftly opens the door, quickly scanning the area. "Jack?"
The room is quiet messy, it seems that someone must have been in here already and just tore up the place. There is a desk close to the window, and the chair is facing said window. Everything is silent, until a figure stood up from the chair with his back turned. Cindy looked relieved at first, but that changed when the figure starts to move slowly. She heard him moan, which made her more scared.
"J-Jack?" She strains, but she didn't receive an answer. There is enough light to see his face, as Jack's mouth is open wide, and his eyes are white. "Oh God...not you..."
"Cindy!" Kevin pulled her back, as he came into the room to check on her and now facing the owner in a similar state like the strange man. "Jack!"
This middle aged balding bar owner named Jack moans loudly, as he shuffles himself towards them raising his arms is a threatening manner. Whatever has gotten that strange man that killed Will, has gotten to him too, and Kevin acted quickly. He lowers his .45 at his leg, and pulls the trigger. It's enough to make him fall on the floor, but even still, he started to crawl, moaning even though blood is bubbling from his throat.
"Jesus...It's like he's possessed..." Kevin said as he couldn't believe it, and he held Cindy back as she took one step.
"No...why is this happening?" She doesn't understand what is happening, why Will had to die, and why her boss is like this. Kevin let go of her, and he quickly went behind Jack and forcefully placed his hands behind his back, putting all of his weight on him so the bar owner wouldn't be a danger to anyone. This method is working, Jack is weakly thrashing, still making noise and snapping his teeth.
"Cindy, quick, get his guns." He ordered. He knows that Jack collected guns, and they would need to protect themselves at least. The waitress nods, she knows what to do and searches the office. It was then when Mark, and David came into the office.
"We heard a gun shot...What the hell is this?" Mark questioned, as he sees Kevin holding down Jack. "Oh my God..." He knew Jack, this doesn't make any sense that he would be this way just like the people attacking the bar. None of them know why this is happening, but he knows that he has to protect himself and Bob. Kevin is still holding him down, and Cindy finally found the weapons inside of a shelf.
"There's only two..." She confirms, as she found two handguns in a secret slot in the rest drawers. She noticed the two men that came in, and Kevin doesn't need a gun, so she decided to give it to those who need them. "Here, they are loaded." She said, as she gives one of them to David.
"Thanks," He grunts, as he accepts this. Cindy tries to hand the remaining gun to Mark, but he declines, as he already have one in his holster. She will keep this one for now, but now they have to get out of here as they heard Alyssa' s voice, she must have unlocked the door.
The waitress give one more sorrowful glance at Jack, before quickly leaving the office.
Finally! Ugh, so what do you think? I'll do better on the next chapter so stay tune, the horror is just beginning! =D
