As Tech-Man pointed out in a review on one of my oneshots, I am addicted to Disney. As further proof of this, this is a oneshot that relates to one of my all time favorite Disney songs. This is the song "So Close" by Jon McLaughlin, which appears in the ball scene in Enchanted. Really, it's a beautiful song, and amazingly Seddie. Enjoy the song, and the story.
So Close
"Why do all the good songs have to be slow songs?" Sam inquired as we stood along the back wall of the school gymnasium. I watched as Carly twirled across the floor with her new boyfriend, Ethan. I was somewhat relieved that she had found someone else. He made her so happy; I couldn't begrudge her of it.
Sam, on the other hand, hovered near my shoulder. She had refused a few guys, knowing that before today, none of them had known who she was. I was her best friend, and even I was shocked when she showed up to the dance in a beautiful dress, her face lit up with barely a trace of makeup. I had been tempted to ask her to dance all night, but I didn't want to face the awkwardness sure to follow.
But this may be my chance, "What's wrong with slow songs?"
She scoffed at me, "Other than the fact you need someone else to dance with? Nothing."
I held my hand out to her, "I'm someone else," I reminded her. "I'm even of the male persuasion."
She stared at my hand, "Are you serious?"
I nodded, and before she could respond, I took her hand and led her to the dance floor, before guiding one arm around my neck, and holding her at the waist. All the other couples were just swaying to the music. We would stand out.
"Just follow my lead," I whispered, and her mouth opened to object, but got distracted trying to follow my steps as I twirled her around the floor.
She seemed shocked, but I felt her fingers wrap around my neck, and for the first time, I had no fear of being strangled. She was finally starting to keep up, and asked, "When did you learn how to dance like this?"
"Can you keep a secret?" I prompted, even for a second, forgetting our past. She nodded, "My mother needed a partner for her ballroom dancing class."
She laughed, and as she did, I pulled her just a little closer, "I would make a joke, but it's just…too…easy…"
Her words became hesitant as she caught my eyes, releasing my hand, and moving hers behind my neck, moving us into the same position as the other couples, but somehow I didn't mind so much. I remember that we were out here was because Sam liked the song, and as I listened to the lyrics, I could almost feel why.
So close to reaching that famous happy end
Almost believing this was not pretend
And now you're beside me and look how far we've come
So far we are so close
Admittedly, I got caught up in it all, and when the song ended, I barely noticed. Neither did she, and her arms stayed wrapped around my neck.
"Have I told you how beautiful you look tonight?" I told her quietly, knowing I'd neglected to before. She shook her head as her cheeks got darker. "Well, you do."
"You clean up pretty nice too," she said, as her hand slid down my chest to rest somewhere near my breastbone. I was almost sure she could feel my heartbeat through my shirt. I covered her hand with mine, and I felt frozen.
This is Sam. I reminded myself. She's your best friend. She's Sam.
But amazingly, that didn't hinder the feelings I was having. But the hip-hop song was slowly sifting into our moment, and there was nothing I could do to stop it.
Except…
"Hey Sam, I'm thinking about leaving early," I was encouraged by her crestfallen expression. "I was wondering if you needed a ride."
She smiled a little, and submitted, "Sure."
"Great, let's go make sure Ethan can drive Carly home," I said, feeling way too responsible, and taking her hand to lead her through the crowd. I noticed that we were holding hands, almost. The way our fingertips skimmed each other couldn't really count as holding hands, now could it?
We found Carly and Ethan, and as she saw our hands hovering, her eyes connected with mine. I demand an explanation.
Later, I promised, before breaking eye contact, "We're leaving a little bit early? You can get home alright?"
She nodded, though her features showed that she was still a little perturbed by the situation. For once, I honestly didn't care. I just smiled at her before pulling Sam in the direction of the doors.
When we were outside, I helped her into the passenger seat of my car, which somehow didn't seem clean enough for her. Two hours ago, I wouldn't have minded, but suddenly, everything felt different. It's just Sam, I shouldn't need to impress her, but I felt like I had to.
The whole ride was silent. I was too busy thinking; resisting. When I pulled up to her house, she hesitated before moving to get out, but at that moment, I got out to open her door for her.
"You don't have to do that," she tried, but I just smirked and helped her out. "Don't smirk. You don't have to treat me like a girl just because I'm in a dress."
"I'm not treating you like a girl because you're wearing a dress," I told her, running my hand along her arm before taking her hand in mine. "I'm treating you like a girl because you are a girl, a beautiful, amazing girl…."
She stared at me for a second, before simply answering, "Oh."
She look down at our hands for a moment, then when she realized what we were doing, dropped it to grab her elbow nervously, and said, awkwardly, "So…"
"…Yeah," I added, just as awkwardly. "So, rehearsal tomorrow?"
She smiled as she nodded, and I knew she was hiding something, "I'm looking forward to it."
She stared at me, waiting for me to say something, but I couldn't translate what I was thinking into words, so I just stood there like an idiot.
When I didn't say anything, she reached for the doorknob, but I intercepted her, "I had a nice time tonight."
"So did I," she admitted, before wrapping me into an unexpected hug. I just held her for a moment before she let go and went inside, only turning around to say, "Goodnight."
As soon as the door closed, I knew what I had meant to say. I felt things. I don't know what they are, but I want to find out. I want to be with you.
But I hadn't, and not it was too late. The moment was gone. So instead I cursed myself and sat down on her stoop. It only took a few seconds before my phone started vibrating in my pocket.
"Hello?" I answered warily, not even bothering to look at the screen.
"Freddie," it was her, "Look, I know that you're in love with Carly, but tonight you ignored her, and you couldn't take your eyes off me, and I may be imagining things, but I…"
"Sam," I interrupted, "I'm still on your front porch."
"Oh," she said quietly. "I'll be out in a moment."
She hung up and opened the door at the same time and I couldn't help but smile as I turned and patted the spot next to me on the stoop. She sat down, but couldn't figure out how to finish what she had been saying only a few moments ago. So I helped her.
"Yes," I told her. "I felt things for you tonight that I never felt for Carly, even when we were dating. I…I want to try it, if you want to."
When a few silent moments went by and she didn't answer, I added, "You know, if the answer is no, I'd rather you just said it. My pride would be bruised enough without your fists getting involved."
I was only half kidding. It was taking too long. Maybe I was wrong about Sam. It wouldn't be the first time.
She shook her head, "I'm not trying to figure out how to say no. I'm trying to figure out how to say…it's just…try…dating? Us?" she asked nervously.
I nodded, "Weird, isn't it?"
She chuckled, "Just a little. But…I want to try."
If I hadn't been so focused on her lips, I would have been able to fool myself into thinking I had dreamed it, but I had read every word, "Yeah?"
She nodded, and I started to lean toward her. We were so close I could feel her breath on my face. This was it. So…
…close. My phone went off in my pocket. I wanted to ignore it, but Sam had already pulled far enough away to be out of my reach. So I answered it.
"Freddie! Where did you guys go? I want an explanation!"
"Listen Carly, can I call you back? I'm a little busy…"
"No you cannot! What is g—"
I knew Carly would be angry about being cut off with a dial tone, but at the moment, I had a one track mind, and that track was leading directly to Sam's lips.
I threw my phone in the bushes to avoid any more interruptions and used my now-free hand to support myself as I leaned closer to her.
"So where were we?" I asked, and to my surprise, she pulled my face down to hers and our lips met. I couldn't help but smile, even as we kissed, that it had all worked out.
When we pulled away, we both just smiled. It had been stop-and-go for so long, and we'd finally made it here. I knew it was where we were supposed to be.
"So, I'll see you at rehearsal tomorrow," she said, mocking my earlier attempt to leave.
"Of course," I said. I pecked her on the lips as I got up to leave. "I'm looking forward to it."
I took one step toward my car before she pulled me back by my tie and kissed me, hard. A minute later, she pulled away, breathless, and let me go. I took her hand and kissed it, before helping her up.
"Goodnight Princess Puckett," I said quietly as I watched her go into her house. I waited, even after the door closed, and took a deep breath, before walking back to the car slowly. And I couldn't help but hum…
So close to reaching that famous happy end
Almost believing this was not pretend
And now you're beside me and look how far we've come
So far we are so close
I'm not sure I loved the ending, but I love the song. I hope you like my little Disney inspired oneshot. I did. Please review :]
