Chapter 6: Teaching A Old Dog New Tricks
White ears twitched in irritation as Inuyasha waited for the group to pack up camp. He was eager to get a move on so they could get Kagome back. The inu-hayou was also on edge and for good reason too. Last night while everyone was resting he felt a spike of a powerful aura that he hasn't felt since Sounga was cast back to hell. For this reason alone, he felt on the surprising side a little excited. If it was true then maybe just maybe he could get to know the old man he never got to know growing up...
"We're ready Inuyasha.", Miroku replied as he came to a stop beside the hanyou. Inuyasha gave a silent nod and the group started walking towards the House of Moon. Miroku and Sango exchanged glances before shrugging and following after him. They too had felt the aura last night but didn't want to say anything. If Inuyasha wasn't worried about it then they wouldn't either. Though both we're curious as to what held such a powerful aura...
Toga gently laid the unconsciousness miko down upon the futon before facing his surprised son. This wasn't exactly how he wanted his eldest to find him and with his unconsciousness mate no less. Giving a quick glance to the heavens, Toga felt for sure that the goddess was certainly laughing at him right now. 'Oh, just laugh it up Amatseru.', he thought with a smile.
He knew this would be a shock to Sesshoumaru, for the last time his son had seen him, he was bounding off to battle never to returned again. While he knew that it had indeed hurt Sesshoumaru, Toga had followed his heart that night. Maybe now that he was older he could understand his decision beyond that night and the circumstances as well.
Now however Toga planned to be more involved in both his sons' life whether they wanted it or not. Giving a small smile Toga turned and embraced the Taiyoukai startling him.
Sesshoumaru was bewildered by his father appearing out of nowhere. He had no idea what to make of all of this! And how come he never felt him approach as well? Obviously, his father was more powerful than he originally thought. But now the question that was most bothersome to him was did he want the lands back? Was he going to have to step down?
When released Sesshoumaru began to ask this but was silenced by Toga.
"I know what your thinking my son and no I do not want the lands back. It was your birth right to inherit them when I died and it shall stay as it is.", Toga replied with a smile as Sesshoumaru gave a nod. Knowing that he wasn't going to lose his title another question came to him. "Father , why have you come back?", he asked with curiosity while Toga sighed before leaving the room. When Sesshoumaru didn't follow he stopped and turned to give him a questioning gaze.
"Come, the miko will be fine here. There are things we must discuss with her not in our presence.", he responded when Sesshoumaru gave a quick glance at Kagome before hurrying out of the room behind his father.
Entering a room farther down the hall Sesshoumaru was immediately overwhelmed with the feeling of nostalgia. It was a room that only he and his father used together when he was but a pup. Memories spring forth, remembering he and his father sitting in the very same chair he was in now. He remembered the many times running in herye and jumping into Toga's lap while he read scrolls. Often he would set the work aside and play with Sesshoumaru. They were memories of a time when he was happy. But those days were gone and it was time to face the present. 'Those days are long gone.', Sesshoumaru thought as he closed the door behind them.
Standing before the elder youkai, Sesshoumaru waited patiently for he to began. "This room brings back pleasant memories doesn't it Maru?", he asked using the nickname he gave his son. Toga almost laughed at the very slight widening of Sesshoumaru's eyes. It was good to see that his son did feel emotions regardless of how hard he tried to hide them. That was one thing he could never understand about Sesshoumaru. Catching on to what his father was doing Sesshoumaru quickly schooled his features back to the blank emotionless stare. Toga gave a slight smile at his son before glancing around the room. It had obliviously not been used in some time if the layers of dust were any indication. His son must have avoid this room completely after he had passed. A frown appeared on his face as he thought just had much Sesshoumaru had been hurt by his death. Giving a mental shake of his head Toga forced those thoughts away for another time.
"So my son, I see you have taken a mate. What made you decide to take you brother's miko?", he asked with a raised eye brow.
Sesshoumaru gave a possessive growl at the comment, "She wasn't the half-breeds. He never laid claim to her.", he growled out as Toga gave a sudden laugh.
"Still having fights with your brother I take it?", Toga replied with a shake of his head. If only he knew the whole story behind Inuyasha and his mother...
"Half-brother.", Sesshoumaru automatically corrected out of habit.
"Why do you hate him so much Maru? I've never known you to hate someone or something without valid reason.", Toga asked with seriousness. It really did worry him because he held this much hatred towards Inuyasha and with him being a hanyou...well it would definitely cause problems in the future. This needed to be fixed now.
Sesshoumaru turned from Toga at that moment and stared at some painting on the opposite side of the room. He really wished his father hadn't asked that question. It would bring about some very uncomfortable feelings that he wasn't sure he was ready to admit too yet. But then again its been over 300 years since he had seen his father, well physically at least. He gave a deep sigh before turning and staring Toga in the eyes and he let it all go.
"I felt betrayed. I felt I wasn't a good enough son for you and that's why you had to leave me and mother behind. When I heard news of your death it was as if this Sesshoumaru was stabbed over and over repeatedly again. We had hope that it was just a misunderstanding and that you were just injured. But when they found your remains...", Sesshoumaru trailed off before quickly looking away from Toga who held a shocked expression upon his face.
"When I found out that Inuyasha and his mother lived, I blamed them for your death. If it wasn't for them then maybe you would have still been alive. And I wasn't the only one who thought that either. You wanted to know why I hate him, its not because he's half human like you are possible thinking. It's because he had your acceptance and love. I never felt any of that when I was younger due to all the training I had to under go. I knew I had a title to live up to but not once did you ever say, that you were proud of me.", Sesshoumaru said with such intense look that Toga bowed his head with shame.
He never knew he son had varied for his attention so much until he was no longer apart of this world. And all he really wanted was for him to be proud of him. Toga never in all his years regretted what he just found out. He in fact was very proud of Sesshoumaru and loved him just as much. Not once did he think that Sesshoumaru would doubt his feelings for him. Resting his head against his hands Toga tried to gather his thoughts in order before he spoke. The last thing he wanted to do was aggravate the situation worse than what it already was.
Sesshoumaru watched his father out the corner of his eye. His father he dared to say looked-unsettled by what he had just told him. Confusion made its way on his face as he watched his father battled his internal thoughts. Was he wrong in what he thought was the truth? Was he once more assuming what he perceived as the truth when in fact it wasn't? Was he wrong to doubt his own father? He honestly didn't know anymore. So much time has passed and he has grown up but those thoughts and feelings never went away. Just went into a box in the back of his mind until needed later on. This was exactly the reason he disliked emotions. They were troublesome.
Once Toga had gather his thoughts he lifted his head from his hands and waited for Sesshoumaru to look him in the eye. This situation was not to be taken lightly and what he was fixing to tell his son would very well shock him.
"It was never my intention to make you doubts my feelings for you my son. I do admit that I never said I was proud of you often but the most of all I never said I loved you. I am so very sorry Sesshoumaru for making you doubt me. And I was never trying to replace you nor your mother with Inuyasha and Izayoi.", Toga said with sincerity shining in his eyes. He honestly did feel bad for what he had done. "But I do not regret my actions that night. Izayoi was in danger and as her mate it was my responsibility to protect her. Your mother knew this and understood it. My son it is not uncommon for our kind to have more than one mate. It's rare but not uncommon for it to happen.", Toga replied as Sesshoumaru looked surprised.
All this time he thought his father only had his mother when he had another mate... so that explained a lot of things...
"Considering I had mated your mother first she was and will always be Alpha female in my pack. Izayoi knew this and understood it as did your mother. Your mother later on grew to accept and befriend Izayoi. And I do believe your mother would have helped them had the bond still been active.", Toga replied while Sesshoumaru looked confused.
"Once the main holder of the bond is gone, which would be me neither parties of the bond can be felt anymore." Still looking confused Toga went into more depth on certain bonds.
"My son there is a lot you most learn about bonds. There are two types of bonds that our kind uses, one is just a simple mating bond and the other is a rare type of bond called a soul-marking bond.", Toga said while Sesshoumaru listened with interest.
"A mating bond is just what it is called a mating bond. It is achieved when one takes a mate. The bond that is formed is a connection between the two or three parties involved. You can feel their emotions and also where they are located at all times. This is the bond I had with your mother and Izayoi. Now the soul-marking bond is very rare from what I was told and its somewhat a mystery as well. From what little I know about it when a couple mates, the female's soul is marked by her counter part's soul or aura. This soul- marking will tell all who she belongs too. But if the female is powerful as well, the same will occur to the male as well. And if this happens both are literally tied together, even in death. That is all I know on that kind of bond.", Toga finished as he watched Sesshoumaru in deep thought. Obliviously, something was troubling the boy.
"Father, I do believe that the Miko and I have achieved the soul-marking bond.", he replied somewhat hesitantly. Toga gave a smile to his son right as a knock was heard on door, a guard presented himself to Sesshoumaru and his father.
"My Lords.", he bowed quickly two them before straightening back up. "Pardon the intrusion but there is a group of humans and Prince Inuyasha outside the gates.", he replied as Sesshoumaru merely raised an eyebrow while Toga began smiling from ear to ear.
As the guard left Sesshoumaru gave a quick glance out the corner of his eye to his father. The old dog was practically beaming at the thought of meeting Inuyasha. But then again he couldn't fault his father for wanting to meet the one son he never got to see grow up. Giving a nod to his father they both made there way to the front gates to greet the group. Once outside the castle Sesshoumaru watched as his father began to walk faster. Inside he gave a smile at Toga's enthusiasm to meet Inuyasha.
"Inuyasha! My boy, its been too long since I last saw you!," Toga said deeply as Inuyasha turned shocked eyes upon the one person his never truly meet.
"Father?"
