The Snowy Day

I was walking alone towards my house. It was a cold, snowy day. But it didn't feel quite as cold as it should have for all of the snow that was coming down. Maybe that was because of the black umbrella I was holding. The street I was walking on was completely deserted. It must have been because it was kind of late in the day. I must have stayed in town for a bit too long.

I kept moving along. Enjoying the quiet. The only sounds to be heard were the steady crunching of my footsteps. Soon I was heading up the hill A place that I knew very well for the amazing view of the city it provided. But since I was late enough as is, I decided to forgo taking in the view for tonight.

But as I walked past that look out point, I saw a sight that seemed a little out of place. There was a lone girl there, about my age, wearing a white kimono just staring out into the city, without moving a muscle.

I walked past her at first. Not really interested in stopping. But for some reason, I felt like I should stop. So I did so for a moment to regard her. From where I stood see her side profile. She seemed very cute…

"Good evening," I called out. She seemed to be an interesting person.

She turned her head to regard me, and I felt the breath leave my lungs and my eyes widened.

She wasn't overwhelmingly beautiful, but for some reason, at that moment, I couldn't think of anyone more beautiful than her. She stared at me with a vacant expression that for some reason, I felt drawn to. There was…an emptiness to her eyes that drew me to her like nothing else I had ever experienced.

Then I felt my heart speed up as she gave me a small smile.

I don't know how long we stood like that. It honestly felt like a whole hour had gone by. But then she turned away and walked down the hill. For some reason, I couldn't chase after her. I couldn't even call out to her as she vanished in the distance.

I stood there for awhile, not quite sure what had just happened. But I did know one thing for certain. I would meet that girl again. I was sure of it.

Looking back on it now, I'm pretty sure that for me at least, it truly was a phenomenon that not very many people get to truly experience in life.

Because what happened on that snowy day, even though I didn't fully know it or understand it at the time, was truly, once in a lifetime, love at first sight.
