Not Quite Ready

This is my first fan-fic here, so any reviews would be really helpful: D It's also based more on the film (as I haven't had a chance to read the book as a friend of mine was literally forcing me to write this…. Not mentioning any names (Lizzie)).Thank you to Lizzie for every single day saying "post something tonight." I'm here now!

This is my version of Clare's agonising wait for her husband to return for the last time.

Disclaimer: I do not own the Time Travellers Wife, or any of the characters portrayed in this story.

New Years Eve, 2006

I watched silently as my Henry disappeared in front of me. His face, fading into the realm in which he would inevitably be shot, held one single tear as he drifted, until all that was left of him was a heap of clothing in a wheel chair. I reached under me to pull out the ring, the ring that I had picked up so many times and placed over my own, waiting for my best friend to come back to me and pick it up. This time would be different.

I sensed a movement to my right, and turned to look. Alba, my darling Alba, so like her father in many ways, stood watching me. She knew it was coming, I knew it was coming. She lifted one little hand and gave me a faint wave, a small sad smile on her lips. My baby was so strong; she had her father's heart. I gathered up the clothing that was beneath me and stood up. The fireworks were still going, it being new years. I didn't know how long Henry would be gone for, but I knew that it couldn't be that long. I watched as another sparkle of fire flew into the air, and closed my eyes to remember the first time we met.

"There's no such thing as time traveller's" I said indignantly.

"If you hang around long enough, you'll see me disappear." He replied.

The memory was so clear. It didn't seem like thirty years ago.

I knew that Henry had arrived back. Before the screaming and the shouts, I felt his presence. Every moment with him raced through my mind at once- every touch, every kiss, every silence, every cry, every laugh. I wouldn't change it for the world. He was my heart and my soul. Without him I didn't know what life would be like.

Then the screaming started.

"I love you, and I'm gone," Henry whispered.
