Once we tasted wonder, untainted and wide-eyed.
But your heart paled in a storm of sorrow. Love condemned.
I still love you~
'The end is near'
'What do you mean?'
'I'm not sure. It just feels like everything is coming to an end.
Not for you though..
Not for you.'
L bit his lip and looked up, the rain splashing down on his melancholic expression. The mellow moonlight shone quietly through the dark blanket of cloud and spraying rainfall. Everything was grey apart from the sparkling red of the lights atop each high-rise, blinking to their heart's content. The storm raged around the two slight figures standing on the roof. It was as though no-one else existed in Tokyo at that moment except for those two young men, facing each other, their eyes intensely fixed.
'I must confess to you Light.
For the first time in my life something I haven't felt before sits inside of me.
Doubt.'
The weak brooding figure walked over to the edge and hung his tired body over the side railings. Through the stormy mist, he peered down at the dark city below. His head hung down and the water drizzled down his neck and through his dripping black hair. His hands gripped the railing and he closed his tired eyes…
Light went over silently and stood behind him. His arms reached out and wrapped around L's weak body, clutching his chest. He rested his head on his wet back. L froze in shock but stood still draped over the side, feeling suddenly protected by Light's embrace.
And then, ever so gently, the tears began to stream down his face. He slowly lifted his heavy head up to the clouds as the rain trickled down his forehead. Light traced up L's spine with his forehead and burrowed his face into the side of L's cold neck. He never wanted to let go.
But this could never happen. It could never last. They were enemies from the beginning. How could the hunter and the hunted ever live and love forever? There was no happy ending. Only the painful struggle of the distance they forced themselves to keep, except for this one defining moment where L fell to pieces in Light's arms, and the anguish was so overbearing that his calculated mind and thoughts shattered and his intelligence meant nothing.
He savoured the moment nonetheless.
L turned to face Light, still entwined in his arms. He looked deeply at the expression on Light's tortured face. His soaked hair dripped water onto his trembling lip. So much pain. So much resentment. He cringed in shame and lowered his head, silently trying but failing to hold the tears back.
L placed his pale hands on either side of Light's face and pulled it slowly closer until their icy lips pressed against one another, dependent on each other's embrace. L's long fingers gently caressed Light's hair. They held each other for what seemed like an unforgiving amount of time. Eventually, L's lips broke away and he leaned them up to Light's ear, about to say something but hesitating. Shaking, he clenched his teeth and propped his chin against Light's shoulder, crying with frustration. It was as if the rain was his tears. Struggling, he once again lifted himself up to Light's ear and whispered..
I forgive you Light.
Thirty minutes later.
Black.
'Watari?...'
Flash.
And Light was suddenly staring into L's wide dead eyes.
One single tear ran down his face. He quickly wiped it away.
And it was gone.
Just like L.
