Chapter Twenty-Six: Mildred's Recovery

That evening, Constance kept vigil over Mildred, hoping that she would recover soon. Mildred had awakened before, but had gone unconscious again.

"Millie, my darling. You must wake up. We beat her. Mistress Broomhead is dead." Constance told Mildred. She sponged her feverish forehead. Millie could hear everything and was trying to respond. It was like she was comatose but as soon as she heard the words "Mistress Broomhead is dead", her eyes flicked open.

"Mildred, you're all right!" Constance exclaimed. Mildred was looking around, confused. She saw the worried faces of Constance, Contantine, Samantha, Ethel, Misss Cackle and Maud.

"Mildred, do you know where you are?" Asked Amelia. Mildred shook her head no.

"Mildred, who are these people?" Amelia asked. Mildred was silent as she tried to remember.

"S..St...Star?" Mildred asked questioningly.

"Yes, the baby is Star." Said Constance. "Who am I?

MMildred squinted as flashbacks came at her full-force.

"Aunt Constance Hardbroom?" She inquired softly.

"Who am I?" Asked Miss Cackle.

"Miss...Miss Cackle?" Mille wondered, dazedly.

"Who are these two?" Miss Cackle gestured to Contance's parents.

"Grand...mother? Grand...dad?" Mildred was woozy.

"Mildred, who am I?" Ethel asked.

"E..Eth..Ethel ...Hallow?" Said Mil.

"Yes, Mildred. I'm your friend now." Answered Ethel.

"Who am I, Millie?" Asked Maud.

""M...M..Ma..Maud...Moonshine?" Came the reply.

"You are at my school, Cackle's Academy." Said Amelia. "You attend school here and this is now your home. Who is Hecketty Broomhead...or rather, was?"

"A bad person...bad woman...bad witch." Mildred answered.

"Yes, she was a very bad witch and an overall evil human being who never cared about her child or grandchildren, nor her great-grandchildren." Amelia told her.

Mildred lay in bed. "Tired..." She said.

""Go to sleep, Mildred. We will keep an eye on you." Constance said as she snuggled Star close. 'We may be free, but I will still protect my daughter and niece.' She thought. Star was visibly fussy from the day's events. Constance went to her dormitory to calm her.

"Oh, my Constance Nightstar. I know things were scary and sad today. You should not have been there. Obviously by your reaction, you do understand...but Mummy was supposed to shield you from all of that." Constance's voice cracked. Star let out an upset squeal.

"Shhh, shhhh, shhhh. It's all right now. Everything's going to be all right, little love." Constance crooned. Star was only eight days old, but so much had happened in that time. "Shhh.. Mummy's here, Princess. She will never leave you. Come on now. You're safe, Millie's safe, Mummy's safe.. So are all of the magickal schools, teachers, and pupils. That naughty woman can never hurt us again."

Star hated when her Mummy or her cousin Millie were upset, but she couldn't have everything she wanted in life. Mildred was recovering, her brain's pathways were beginning to rebuild themselves, being a witch, but it would take a while before she would be fully recovered.
