Chapter 6
Final Battle and Presentation

The four armored heroes stood before Vanko, who stared them down without much fear.

"Good to be back." he smirked arrogantly.

He doesn't seem that worried about facing all of us. Like he's got something up his sleeves. Shinji thought to himself.

"Oh, this ain't gonna be good." War Machine said.

Vanko unfurls his whips, the energy glowing brightly and nearly blinding the quartet.

Not what I was thinking. Shinji thought.

"I got something special for this guy. I'm gonna bust his bunker with the Ex-Wife." War Machine said as he activated the mini-rocket that was in his left shoulder.

"The What?" Iron Man asked as the weapon launched and unceremoniously struck Vanko in the chest and bounced off, landing in the small river that he was standing in.

The group looked at the mini-rocket as it fizzed at Vanko's feet. Shinji could feel an anime-style sweat-drop appear his head.

"Hammer Tech?" Iron Man asked.

"Yeah." War Machine said, dejected at what just happened.

"I got this." Iron Man said as he fired his mini-stinger missiles from his own armored shoulders.

Vanko covered his face with his helmet as the mini-missiles bounced off his suit. He lunged towards the quartet and lashed out with his whip, causing the foursome to scatter. Iron Man blasted into the air and fired at Vanko, who retaliated by lashing out, grabbed one of Iron Man's boots, and hurled him over to a pile of rocks.

War Machine fired up his machine guns and blasted the armored villain. Vanko lashed out and whipped the gunmetal gray soldier, striking his mini-gun and severing it from his shoulder.

Rescue flew towards Vanko and tackled him backwards. Vanko grabbed the young woman and tossed her away as Iron Man and War Machine double teamed him. The pair were punching and kicking at him, but Vanko grabbed them and spun around, throwing them off of him and then unfurling his whips once again.

Centurion, meanwhile, had flown towards the mini-rocket that Rhodes had fired, grabbed it and began fiddling with it, using the new mini-tools in his gloves.

Iron Man punched Vanko hard in the face, but Vanko was tougher, and backhanded Stark away. War Machine continued to fire his machine guns, from his arms this time, which was starting to annoy Vanko. He lashed out as struck Rhodes in the chest, nearly hitting his arc reactor.

Stark and Rhodes were down. Vanko was about to finish them off when Rescue flew in and blasted him in the face and chest with her repulsors.

Vanko snarled as he grabbed the armored woman with his hands and begun pounding on her, before he threw her off. He then wrapped his energy whips around the girl and began electrocuting her.

She shrieked heavily as her armor was scorched and started to melt.

"SHINJI!" she cried out in pain.

Suddenly, Centurion jumped on Vanko's back and started pounding on his head.

Vanko growled as he released Mari and tried to reach for Shinji.

Shinji hung on as much as he could, before jamming the mini-rocket into Vanko's shoulder and jumped off, his boots blasting Vanko in the back, stumbling forward as he turned around to face Shinji.

Stark and Rhodes were on their feet, the pair behind Vanko as Shinji was in front of him.

"Everyone, Fire At The Missile!" Shinji shouted.

Vanko noticed the missile sticking out of his shoulder, but was unable to reach it. He fired off his jets and started to rise out of the enclosed park. Shinji leapt at him, and grabbed one of energy whips in order to keep him in one place.

"Let Go!" Vanko screamed as he energized the whip and tried to electrocute the young man.

"AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!" Shinji screamed as the energy surged through his armor. "SHOOT... HIM!" he shouted.

Stark raised his hand and fired off a bolt of repulsor energy at the missile in Vankos shoulder. Rhodes was also on his feet, and fired at the missile Shinji had imbedded in his shoulder.

The two energy beams struck the mini-rocket and ignited it.

BOOM!

Shinji was tossed back towards Mari, while Vanko felt the heat and force of the explosion pound his body in incredibly painful ways.

"What the hell..." Rhodes gasped as Vanko crashed hard into the ground.

"Like it? That was the Ex-Wife." Shinji said with a groan.

"The what? That thing didn't work." Stark said.

"I got it to work." Shinji said.

"Really. Why didn't it do that when I fired it?" Rhodes asked.

"From what I could tell, it was miscalibrated. I reworked the internal firing mechanism, and... Boom!" Shinji said. "Course... it needed it a trigger."

"Not a bad piece of tech." Stark commented.

"Yeah. When it works." Rhodes said.

"Yeah." Stark agreed.

The pair walked up to Vanko, who was coughing up blood and look more than a little burnt.

What's more, he was laughing.

"What's so funny, sunshine?" Rhodes asked.

"You lose." Vanko coughed/laughed.

Suddenly, the Hammer Drones that were all around them, started blinking like crazy.

"What the..." Stark gasped as his HUD was going crazy.

"These drones are rigged to blow, Tony! We need to get out of here!" Rhodes shouted.

"Pepper?" Stark gasped.

"Mari-Chan!" Shinji cried out.

"Shinji... I can't move!" Mari shouted to him.

Shinji easily picked Mari up and exploded into the sky.

Rhodes took off before them, and Tony was in the air heading towards Pepper.

The Hammer Drones exploded, Vanko laughing as he was consumed by the explosion of his own armor. Shinji carried Mari in his arms, following Rhodes to a nearby rooftop that overlooked the Expo, where he set her down in order to examine her.

"Is she alright?" Rhodes asked.

"Argh!" Mari cried out as Shinji removed her faceplate and started to uncouple the armor plates of her suit.

"Yeah, I think she is." Shinji said as he carefully helped to remove her suit.

"Barely." she groaned as she tried to sit up. "I'll be fine. Just... get me out of this tin can." Mari said to him.

A few seconds later, Stark arrived with Pepper Potts in his arms.

Pepper, however, was screaming and yelling in panic as Tony removed his damaged helmet which was sparking.

"Oh, my god! I can't take this anymore!" Pepper shouted.

"You? Look at me." Tony rebutted.

"My body, literally, cannot handle the stress. I never know if you're gonna kill yourself or wreck the whole company." she shouted at him.

"I think I did okay." he argued back

"I quit! I'm resigning." she said with a sigh. "That's it." she said with a deep sigh.

Tony actually looked shocked at what she said. Rhodes, Shinji and Mari looked at each other, realizing that the pair had noticed them yet.

"What did you just say? You're done?" he asked. "That's surprising. No, it's not surprising. I get it. You don't have to make any excuses."

"I'm.. I'm... I'm not making any excuses." Pepper retorted.

"Well, you actually were just making excuses." he said.

"No, I wasn't making excuses."

"But you don't have to."

"I'm actually very justified." she defended.

"Listen. Hey, hey. You deserve better." he said.

"Well..." she shrugged.

"You've taken such good care of me. I've been in a tough spot, but you got me through it, so... Right?" he asked, taking her hand in his.

"Thank you." she said.

"Yeah." he replied.

"Thank you for understanding."

"Yeah, yeah. Let's talk clean-up." he said, changing the subject.

"I'll handle the transition. It'll be smooth." she said.

"Okay. What about the press? Because you only had the job for a week. That's gonna seem odd, and..."

"Well, with you it's like dog years."

"I know."

"It's like the Presidency.."

KISS!

Pepper was a little taken back by Tony's sudden action, but she wasn't protesting or complaining.

Off to the side, Shinji, Mari and Rhodey were just looking on with some amusement.

"Weird." Tony said.

"No, it's not weird." Pepper replied.

"It's okay, right?" he asked.

"Yeah."

"Run that by me again."

"I think it was weird." Rhodey said to them.

The pair look over to see Rhodes sitting down a few feet away from them.

How had they missed him?

They then noticed that Shinji and Mari were also there, just watching them.

How had they missed them?

"You guys look like two seals fighting over a grape." Rhodes said.

"I had just quit, actually..." Pepper started to say.

"Yeah, so we're not..." Tony tried to defend himself.

"You don't have to do that. I-I heard the whole thing." Rhodes replied.

"You should get lost." Tony said.

"We were here first. Get a roof." Rhodes said to him, Shinji and Mari grinning.

"I thought you were out of one-liners." Tony snarked.

"That's the last one." he replied.

"You kicked ass back there, by the way. All of you." Tony congratulated the trio.

"Thank you. You, too." Rhodes said, speaking for the armored trio. He then stood up and turned to Tony and Pepper. "Listen, my car got taken out in the explosion, so I'm gonna have to hang on to your suit for a minute, okay?"

"Not okay. Not okay with that." Tony said.

"Wasn't a question." he said as his faceplate closed and he took off into the air.

Shinji and Mari just watched him go, before Shinji picked the young woman up and blasted off into the air. Mari wrapped her arms around Shinji's neck with a smile.

"We'll be at the warehouse, if you need us." Shinji said as the pair flew away.

Tony and Pepper watched them go, before turning back to each other.

"How are you gonna resign, if I don't accept?" Tony asked the now laughing Pepper.

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

(SHIELD Safe House, the Next Day)

Tony was looking around at the various video monitors, some of which were replaying an incident that was taking place at some university. Something about a monster attack. The empty warehouse served a purpose for the top secret spy organization, mostly since no one would think to look for them in a place like this. He then noticed a file that said 'Avengers Initiative' on it. He was about to pick it up, when a dark-skinned hand pushed it back down.

"Not sure I want you looking at that. I'm not sure it pertains to you anymore." Nick Fury said as he removed the file and brought up another one. "This, on the other hand, is Agent Romanoff's assessment of you. Read it."

Tony took the file and opened it.

"'Personality overview: Mr. Stark displays compulsive behavior.' In my own defense, that was last week." he said.

Fury just looked at him.

"'Prone to self-destructive tendencies.' I was dying! I mean, please. And... aren't we all?" he asked.

Fury continued to look at him.

"'Textbook narcissism'?" he asked in mock-shock.

Fury looked at Stark and Stark looked back.

"Agreed." Tony admitted. "Uh, here we go. 'Recruitment assessment for Avenger Initiative. Iron Man? Yes.' I'll have to think about it." he said to Fury.

"Read on." Fury added.

"'Tony Stark not... Not Recommended'? That doesn't make any sense. How can you approve me but not approve me? I got a new ticker. I'm trying to do right by Pepper. I'm in a stable-ish relationship." he defended himself.

"Which leads us to believe that at this juncture we'd only like to use you as a consultant. As for Iron Man... well, you're not the only one who can wear the suit."

"True, but the only other person who measures up is Rhodey and... Shinji!" he said as he looked at Fury.

Fury just gave him an impassive look. Like he was playing poker.

"You don't want me. You want Shinji." Tony said.

"In some ways he makes a better Iron Man than you."

"I won't argue he's good, but... he doesn't like you."

"And I don't fully trust him. Even after that file you gave us on him."

"It seemed like a gesture of good will. Get you off his back and all that."

"Alternate dimensions. Giant robots. Humongous alien creatures. Intelligence Swapping? And I can't even imagine how bad his own father had to be to make you seem like the better choice." Fury stated.

"Oh! Was that a dig? From you?" he laughed.

"Point is, despite all his 'complications', Shinji Ikari makes a better Iron Man than you. He wears the suit, you consult on all this, and maybe... just maybe... the world will see a brighter tomorrow." Fury said.

Tony seemed to consider that before smirking.

"Hmm. Okay, Fury. Even though you can't afford me... I'll do this, in exchange for a small favor."

Fury looked at him questioningly.

"Rhodey, Shinji, Mari and I are being honored in Washington... and we need a presenter."

Fury smirked and nodded at that.

"I'll see what I can do."

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

(Time Skip, Shinji's Warehouse)

"I still think Senator Stern was unhappy about giving us those medals." Mari said as she helped Shinji put the final touches on the last suit of armor.

Behind them, James Rhodes was just watching patiently, along with several military soldiers who had just arrived.

"Are they ready?" Rhodey asked.

"Yes, they are." Shinji said as he wiped the sweat from his brow. "The presentation should be great."

"And I am not happy about this." Tony Stark said as he stepped into the warehouse, appearing behind the soldiers and Rhodes.

"Sir, we discussed this." Shinji said as he helped Mari put the last suit into operational order.

"We need to dismantle these weapons." Tony argued.

"Tony..." Rhodes said.

"We're ready, Colonel. Shinji said.

"Alright, let's get them loaded up." Rhodes said to the soldiers.

"Shinji..." Tony said as the soldiers moved.

"Sir, it took me six months to get all of these drones repaired and reassembled, turned back into fully functional battle suits, and after everything that Vanko did to them, including blowing them up, that wasn't easy." Shinji said to Tony.

"And again, you did this... why?" Tony asked.

"I told you. To get the military, the government, and the press off your back." Shinji said.

"Off my back? By giving them weapons that I didn't want to give them?" he argued.

"Actually, you haven't given them any weapons. These drones-turned-battle-suits were the former property of Hammer Industries. I just rebuilt them from the scrap we turned them in to, and reconfigured them so that they can't be easily slaved by any particular system. The Iron Man suits are still far superior to these Hammer suits, but now these suits are superior to anything that the US military currently has in it's arsenal. And still superior to anything any other country could possibly come up with. So... there is very little chance that.."

"That what? That the government won't try and attack every other country in the world that has these suits?" Tony asked.

"There is that possibility. Which is why I came up with this very special protocol." Shinji said as Mari helped the soldiers load the suit into the trucks.

"Protocol? What protocol?" Rhodes asked.

"Iron Man's initial purpose was to privatize world peace, but getting rid of the weapons that had fallen into the hands of bad people. If the United States government doesn't want to do that... if it just wants to use these suits to wage war because it has the technology... we can showcase them doing exactly that. No hidden agenda. No secret black ops mission." Shinji said.

"You mean... spy on them and if necessary, expose them for what they're doing?" Rhodes asked, slightly surprised by this.

"Yes." Shinji said. "All they have to do... is not kill innocent people."

Rhodes actually grinned at that, liking the idea.

"Huh. Interesting. I'm still not happy with giving them, or inadvertently giving them, any kind of weapon system, but..." Tony said.

"I know. I don't really like it either. It just seemed the best way to keep them from hounding you repeatedly while you're trying to make Stark Enterprises into something other than just a weapons manufacturer." Shinji said.

"If they find out about this..." Tony started to say.

"You didn't make this technology, sir. You, or actually I, just made it work." Shinji said.

"Still don't feel right about this." Tony repeated his concern.

"I know. But... it's something that I felt was necessary in order to make sure that nothing interfered with Iron Man's mission."

"You mean, your mission." Tony said.

"Me?" he asked, getting Mari and Rhodes to pay attention.

"I did tell you. Fury wants you on his Avengers Initiative. They want me as a consultant. Mostly because of what happened during my birthday and all." Tony explained.

"Yes, but I thought that was only a joke." Shinji said.

"It wasn't." Tony said.

"Really." he said with a deadpan look. "Uh... I'm not sure I wanna be part of something that Fury is really in to." Shinji said.

"He think's we're gonna need a tough team to handle things. A team of superheroes." Tony said.

"Funded by the government and run by SHIELD." Rhodes said.

"With me as a consultant." Stark smirked.

"I'm not sure about this. I mean... I'm not a hero." he said as Rhodes helped carry out the last of the suits.

"Neither am I, which is why Fury wants you." Tony said.

"I need to think about it. In the meantime, I've got a bunch of deliveries to make." Shinji said.

"Fine. See you in a couple days." Tony said.

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

War Machine, who had been fully repaired by Shinji and Mari, was flying escort for the armored battle suits as Shinji and his team are delivering them. Tony was still not happy about letting Rhodes keep the suit, but Shinji had been insistent that he was the better choice.

"I'm still not sure about this, Shinji." Rhodes said from his suit.

"Perhaps, but this will get the government off of Mr. Starks back." Shinji said from the car with Mari right next to him. The communicator between them working perfectly.

"I know that, and while I like the idea of the government having the best tech and weapons possible, this whole thing about spying on the government..." Rhodes started to say.

"It's only so that they don't do bad things. Like killing innocent people."

"You're overstating things, Shinji."

"Not really. Plus, these suits can't be slaved. They are capable of operating independently. The only thing you have to worry about, is choosing the right pilot."

"In the interest of public safety and security, the government will do whatever it deems right." Rhodes said.

"Killing unarmed civilians is never right." Mari stated.

Rhodes said nothing as he continued to fly.

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

The group arrived at the Air Base, where they were directed to a massive open-desert field that was cleared out for the demonstration. There were several distinguished guests present, each of them anxious for this weapons test.

"I'm still not sure about this, Colonel." General Saunders said as Shinji and his people got the suits ready for the demonstration. "What with the disaster at the Stark Expo and all."

"I understand that, sir. However, these aren't drones. They're armored battle suits that one of Mr Stark's employees refitted in order to make them functional. And I've personally chosen the pilots to handle them, from each of the Four Branches." Rhodes stated.

The General seemed to relax at hearing that.

"Our people?" he asked.

"Our best, sir." Rhodes replied.

"Alright. Let's see them." he said with a smile.

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

The group of senators, generals and even a few scientists were assembled on a large platform with stadium-like seating before the large open area.

Lieutenant Colonel James Rhodes stepped out in front of them. At his side was Shinji Ikari.

"Ladies and gentlemen. Allow me to skip right to the presentation of your new military battle suits. We'll be going in alphabetical order, so, to start with, we have the Air Force Battle Suits." Rhodes said.

The non-reflecting light gray armored suit flew in and landed in front of the platform. It had Air Force markings on it, and a single dark-blue faceplate with no facial features.

"The pilot for this suit is Lieutenant Carol Danvers." Rhodes said.

The armored figure saluted the group before she took to the air.

"Shinji?" Rhodes said, turning the presentation over to the young man.

"The Air Force Battle Suits are equipt with RAM stealth paint for absorption of all reflecting rays as well to be unseen at nighttime. They are equipt with a Vortex Ring Gun on its shoulder, Air-To-Air Missiles on it's legs, Rotary Wrist Blasters, and specialized Flight Stabilizers for maximum ariel maneuverability. These suits are specially adapted for ariel combat, as they possess a lighter armored plating than the other suits you will see here today. They are more maneuverable and possess a specialized thrust system giving them five times more flight time than the other suits." Shinji explained to the assembled group. "To show you it's capabilities, the US government has provided several attack drones to act as enemy combatants."

The suit flew around as a group of unmanned mini-drone flew into the air and attacked her.

Carol turned the weapons systems on and fired, blasting the drones out of the sky and into dust using the Vortex Gun and the ATA missiles.

Within seconds the drones were finished, and Carol flew down, buzzing the crowd. Some of the people in the audience just chuckled.

Rhodes just shook his head at Carols antics. She was a damn good pilot, but a little wild at times.

"Next up, we have the Army Battle Suit." Shinji said.

The armored suit came into view, walking over in front of the crowd stand. It was desert-colored with the word 'Army' painted on it's side, with a large gun on it's back and a silver-colored faceplate in it's helmet.

"This is Sergeant James Bourne of the Army Rangers." Rhodes said as a trio of large-looking robot tanks rolled into view.

James saluted before he turned to the tanks.

"The suit is equipt with a Shoulder-Mounted M242 Bushmaster, and Milkor M32 40mm Grenade Launcher." Shinji said as the Army Battle suit readied itself for action.

It's feet let down a trio of clamps that secured it to the ground, even as it's Bushmaster lowered into position.

"Equipt with ceramic and elastic materials that are sandwiched in the middle, it provides superior protection against small arms fire, anti-tank rounds, and High Explosive Anti-Tank penetrators. The suit is armed with a huge M242 Bushmaster auto-cannon and a Milkor M32 40mm Grenade Launcher. The Bushmaster auto-cannon can alternate between semi-automatic and automatic firing when it is stationary. The gun is mounted on a rail system sandwiched in between the arm and shoulder, that allows the gun to retract straight up when not in use. The armor piercing rounds could be potentially fired at targets 4.5 miles away. The M32 Launcher is integrated in the drone's forearm, and is retractable. When in a serious fight, they engage facial covers, that protect their heads, using special, lighter but stronger components that protect the rest of their body." Shinji said.

The group watched as the Bushmaster gun fired off several rounds and blasted the robot tanks to pieces with just a couple shots each.

The group clapped at the demonstration.

"This next suit, is piloted by Lieutenant Marc Spector of the Marine Corps." James said.

The group watched as a camouflaged armored suit stepped onto the battle field.

Marc saluted the assembled group and then turned to advancing robot tank drones.

"The Marine Corps. Battle Suit is equipt with Electromagnetic Pulse devices, one M32 Grenade Launcher, and Electric Saw Blades. Multiple high-definition cameras are linked to satellites and are streamed to their HQ servers. Strategic analysis software filters the feed against established mission objectives to provide nearly instantaneous tactical directives. The suits are armed with special Electromagnetic Pulse Shielding systems, the M32 Grenade Launcher are capable of blowing open tank armor, and the electric saw blades in the left arm can also tear through tank armor. Generated from within the torso and dispersed from the front, these Electromagnetic Pulses disrupt or disable electrical systems within a roughly 100-ft. radius. Insulated components throughout the armor protect the suit from it's own pulses." Shinji explained.

The five drones surrounded the Marine Suit and were prepared to fire, when Marc suddenly threw his hands forward, and blasted the five drones with his EMP weapon, disabling and shutting them down for good.

"Last but not least, we have the Navy Battle Suits." Shinji said.

The group looked over to the left as a dark blue suit of armor, with large shoulder-mounted missile pods, came into view. The suit itself seemed bulkier than the other ones.

"The pilot is Navy Seal Sean Watanabe." James Rhodes said.

The Seal saluted the crowed before turning back to the open range.

"The Navy Battle Suit is specially designed for underwater combat operations. As such, it is larger to accommodate an Oxygen system for the pilot, and are capable of diving deeper than a Seawolf-class Submarine. It is equipt with a Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser system, as well as an Infrared Scan & Track system which tracks incoming projectiles, calculating distance, speed, and location of fuel tank for targeting and elimination. Singlet delta oxygen is combined with ionized iodine gas to create the beam capable of destroying the target. These suits are armed with the FIM-92 Stinger Missiles. The dual shoulder-mounted Surface-to-air missile pods each contain 12 separate missiles arranged 6 by 6, for a total of 12 mounted missiles. These can be fired independently or concurrently up to 3 at a time, only six per pod, due to the heat. These missiles are controlled by the IRST system to target hostiles and guide missiles. An additional 32 missiles are stored in the torso of the suit for additional fire power."

The Navy suit turned around, and let loose a volley of missiles that blasted the open range of the desert they were in.

Nothing was left standing or moving.

The assembled crowd could only watch in astonishment, before they started clapping.

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

While the senators, generals and scientists were standing around and admiring the four suits that were lined up next to each other, as well as talking to the pilots about how they handled the armored weapons, Colonel Rhodes was congratulating Shinji on a job well done.

"Congrats, Shinji. Everything went off without a hitch." James said to the younger man.

"I hope so. I worked hard to make sure there were no bugs in the systems." Shinji said as the General approached them.

"Very impressive, Mr. Ikari. But... how much are these suits going to cost us?" General Saunders asked.

"Nothing." Shinji stated simply to the general.

"Nothing?" he asked in confusion.

"Nothing. They're a gift." Shinji stated.

"I'm afraid I don't follow." the General said.

"We're giving these battle suits to the US Government as a gift, to derail any hostility between the government and Mr. Stark."

Saunders eyes seemed to light up in realization. "Basically to get us off his back." he translated.

"Yes. These suits, while not as powerful as the Iron Man technology, they are still far more advanced than anything currently in the military's arsenal, as well as that of any other country." Shinji said.

"I see. Then, I thank you for this." he said. "Uh... how many suits are we talking here?"

"12 suits, per Branch of the military. So, 48 total." James Rhodes said. "I personally supervised their delivery, sir."

"I see. That's absolutely incredible." he said to the pair. "I thank you, Mr. Ikari. And as for the Pentagon and the Senate, please inform Mr. Stark that I will make sure they give him plenty of... breathing room."

"Thank you, General." Shinji said with a bow to the man.

As the general walked away, Rhodes gave Shinji as 'thumbs-up', before Mari came over, threw her arms around Shinji's neck and kissed him fully on the lips.

"MMPH!" Shinji gasped as the young woman smothered him with affection.

"Way to go, Shinji-kun! I knew you could do it!" she laughed heartily.

"I couldn't have done it without you, Mari-chan." he smiled back as he held her in his arms.

"Then how about we go out and celebrate?"

"Oh? Did you have something special in mind?"

"You could say that." she smiled and lead him away from the testing range.
