"It is not flesh and blood but the heart which makes us fathers and sons."
-Johann Schiller
He wasn't Fred. He was Fred II.
He was sick of it, sick of never being able to be who he wanted to be. He was born with a set of shoes that he was "destined" to fill. Fred was expected to grow up and be just like his father's twin brother because they shared the same name.
It was not that he didn't like being named after late uncle, he just wanted people to realize that he wasn't his uncle. Yes, he was a twin, yes they both were Gryffindor Beaters, and yes, they were both pranksters but he was different. He liked to read, do his homework, and was more than likely going to become a prefect in his next year at school. He shared a lot of traits with his other uncle, Percy -the uncle that his father always use to mock.
Fred's father didn't know that he enjoyed these schoolwork activities -he had never told him. Around his father, Fred was just like, well, Fred. He pretended to be careless when it came to school and be all about pulling pranks. He just wanted his dad to be happy.
Sometimes, George would talk to his son like he was his deceased brother -recalling memories, old pranks, and other things. Fred would never mention it, though, because these were the only times that he got catch a glimpse of his dad's real smile. Usually, after his father realized his mistake, he would apologize and then look somber, like he had just lost his twin all over again.
Fred felt terrible for his dad -he couldn't even imagine living life without Roxanne. They were just as close as Fred and George had once been -attached at the hip, completing each other's sentences, planning jokes together. There was something about being a twin that created a different type of bond between them, something stronger than just two siblings.
Fred wanted to be there for his father, to make him proud. All he wanted in return was for his dad to understand that he was not his brother Fred, but his son Fred. He wanted him to be okay with him being that Fred.
This was done for Who Dunit Why I Dunit's creative challenge.
