Brother, little brother, why did you let me go?
You let that Slavic giant steal me from my home
He dragged me from you through the cold, cold snow
Believe me, brother, I put up a fight –
But I was no match for my wintery foe.
Brother, he made me build a wall through Berlin
I know it's separating our people from their kin
It's a dividing line stopping me from seeing you
So tell me, brother, do you miss me too?
Brother, it's been a while, and my people have changed
No longer do they speak the language called after your name
Even I learned his strange alphabet, but I'm growing weak
Communism isn't all it's cracked up to be;
Brother, you're lucky to have a democracy.
Brother, it's been longer still
And as the years go by, I'm growing ill
For these people will forget about their once-proud nation
And they must welcome these changes with forced elation
Brother, I tried to cross the wall
But the guards shot me, and down I fell
So I had to settle for vandalism instead
I painted my side black, gold, and red
Brother, I think it's been long enough
My women are angry and my men are getting rough
Their hands – mine too – are itching to tear down this wall
That Commie can't keep us apart for long!
Brother, finally, they're destroying the wall!
Long overdue is its time to fall
I'll be right with my people, in the midst of the crowd
And my voice will be the loudest as the wall tumbles down
Brother, it's done, the wall is destroyed
And all around me, I hear cries of "Mein schatz!" and "Mein freund!"
But brother, I'm lost, and I don't see you
So please, brother, tell me you're searching for me too.
Brother, I see you – you have tears in your eyes!
This is the first time I've seen you cry
You sweep me off my feet; please don't let go…
And you cry into my shoulder, "I missed you so…"
And God, brother, I missed you too – more than you'll ever know.
There is no longer an "East" and a "West"
There is just us, under one name – we both know it's for the best
We are Bundesrepublik Deutschland,
Reunited at last.
Some notes: Slavic giant refers to Russia - Russia was indeed the technical "owner" of East Germany (formerly the territory of Prussia) after WWII. East Germany was Communist, as was Russia. West Germany, which was controlled by the western allies (France, England, USA), was a democracy. The black, gold, and red paint with which Prussia vandalized his side of the wall are supposed to represent the modern German flag, even though in the way I wrote it, the colors are out of order.
I know this isn't about Germany as a whole, and that Germany himself would probably live in West Germany, but my headcanon states that he and Prussia live in Berlin - which was split into East and West by (duh) the Berlin Wall. So yeah...
Also, if anyone could let me know how to use line breaks (because I wanted to add space in between every few lines), please send me a message. Thanks so much!
What did you think? Thank you very much for reading! :)
