All The Things We Never Did

Henry and Natalie meet again for the first time in years at their ten-year high school reunion.

Henry just got dumped by his girlfriend. He's upset about it, but part of him is screaming with joy. Maybe now he and Natalie can get back together.

Natalie works as a secretary and lives four hours away from her old town. She hasn't had any boyfriends since she and Henry broke up. Honestly, she's even considered getting a cat a few times before remembering that she'd rather not be a crazy cat lady.

They both know that they're only stuck in this room full of people they loathed in high school to see each other again.

Henry spots Natalie first, noting that her dress is the exact shade of blue she wore to the spring dance so many years ago and wondering if she did that on purpose. He doesn't know if he should go up to her. What if she doesn't want to talk to him now? What if she hates him? What if she has another boyfriend?

Screw that, he decides, walking up to her. "Hey, Natalie," he says awkwardly.

Natalie looks up from the floor. "Oh, hey, Henry," she says without much emotion, even though she is bursting with excitement inside.

Henry sees Natalie's hunched-over figure and shifting eyes and realizes she must be uncomfortable here, just like him. "Do you want to go outside?"

Natalie shrugs. "Sure."

They sit on the grass outside, and Natalie is the first to speak. "What happened to us?"

"I don't know," Henry admits truthfully. He can't even remember who broke up with who, let alone why.

"We never traveled the world." Natalie hugs her knees to her chest.

"Nope." He inches closer to her.

"We never bought a house together."

"Nope." He can feel her shoulder brush his.

"We never got married."

"Nope." Cautiously, he takes his arm and puts it around Natalie. She doesn't move it away, but she does glance at her watch.

"It's late," she says. "I should be going."

Suddenly, Henry has a crazy idea. He has to try it, or it might be another ten years until they see each other again. "Wait, Natalie?"

"Yeah, Henry?"

"Marry me?"

She nods.
