"Do you miss when I was in charge?"

Egypt didn't know what prompted Turkey to ask a question like this. He suspected that it was the last argument with Greece; the argument that made the latter totter to his house all battered and bruised. Even now, Turkey was refusing to part with his mask, and it was rather inconvenient to dab antibacterial cream around the thing. When did he become the go-to man whenever either nation had a dispute? Greece had been to his house a couple weeks ago fuming about Turkey; frankly, Egypt wished they would get along so he would have some peace once in a while.

Turkey was looking at him like he was expecting an answer and Egypt pondered this. He had been under a time of foreign rule before. He had gotten used to others picking their way into his house. It was really nothing special. His mother had told him about the bosses of old, the pharaohs that controlled the entire Nile and built elaborate tombs from personal self-esteem issues – because surely if they hadn't made a big enough impact alive, they were going to do it right in the afterlife.

Pharaohs were to be respected. They were demigods on Earth, the children of Amon the sun god. Their word was law, and to disagree was to turn your back on the gods.

Egypt believed in the gods. He still found time to pay them homage. He would never desecrate any of his holy grounds, in the same way he would never consider himself worthy of the gods' affection, even if it came from someone indirectly related to the gods. If a boss came from the gods, he would not get his emotions involved.

So to answer Turkey's question, he supposed he didn't miss it at all; after all, now Turkey was not controlling him, was now an ordinary nation, and he did not have to be ashamed of his feelings anymore.

He didn't know how Turkey interpreted his silence (sadness? Nostalgia? Anger?), but the older nation seemed to know where his thoughts were going and gently eased the bandages from his hands as he pulled him closer for a kiss.
