Another one-shot fic. This is set while the tree is falling and Longtail runs back to get the mouse and Briarpaw-now Briarlight- runs back to get him.
Longtail stood in her way."Leave the mouse! We can catch another."
"I'm not wasting prey!" Mousefur growled. "It's an insult to StarClan!"
"Then I'll get it!"
Longtail ran back to the freshkill-pile, 'It's just a mouse! Why does it matter so much?'
"Longtail come back! It's not safe!" Briarpaw yowled behind him.
Crack!
Briarpaw let out a screech. "Get into the elders den!"
'And where would that be?' he thought in annoyance, but chased after Briarpaw's scent.
Crack!
"Longtail get back!" Briarpaw's voice echoed the elders den. He ran faster.
He hopped into the elders den.
Crack!
"What was that?" He asked nervously.
"One of the trees above the clearing is tipping… a huge branch fell off, that was the most recent crash." She whispered. "Longtail… are we going to die?"
Longtail sighed, "No, Briarpaw we're not. How close is the tree now?"
Crack!
Briarpaw gasped. "Its falling!"
"Is it close enough to hit us?"
"I don't know… It looks like it might… Longtail? I think Mousefur loves you."
"She doesn't love me. We're just really close. We've been in the same den our whole lives. Apprentices, warriors, elders… we love eachother in a brother sister way." He purred.
Briarpaw nodded, "I don't want to die yet…" she mewed
"Me neither, Briarpaw, me neither."
"Its almost here! Back up, Longtail, back up!" Briarpaw screeched, backing up as much as she could.
Longtail tried, but there wasn't enough room in the back for them both. "No 's not enough room for both of us back there. I'll have to take my chances."
"Do you promise you'll live?" Briarpaw whimpered.
"I promise."
Crash
"My legs!" Briarpaw yelped as a branch landed on her hind legs. "Longtail? Did you get hit?"
No answer.
"L-Longtail?"
No answer.
She turned as much as she could.
And there was Longtail's body
"You promised…"
Twisted. Limp. Lifeless.
