She could remember lights.

City lights?

Yes. That was it. There were city lights.

There were memories in this place. Floating in and out and in-between, one moment she would know and then it would be gone in a flash. She was floating too, just like her memories, in an in-between place. Not there but not gone.

She couldn't remember what had happened. She knew that she should remember.

It was just flashes sometimes. Pictures of places that she felt that she should know.

Other times it was sounds and sights and smells. But those came few and far between.

But she could always remember lights.

She found herself thinking of a picture it was gone soon enough but she grabbed hold of that flash of color, that fleeting picture of what had been. A summer day, the sun shining, the sky bluer than ever, and she felt that tremble in her mind.

It happened when she looked at most of those pictures of past moments that she couldn't remember ever happening. Like there was something more to it. She knew that there had to be.

Words would form and finish in her head.

He-

I love-

Fireworks-

They would all end before she could know what they meant, but those words were the only ones that stayed with her as she floated in the darkness, the darkness that she knew was darkness because she could remember lights.

The images were coming more often now, though she didn't know how long she had been floating.

Sometimes she would hear voices, saying things she didn't understand, saying things that sounded so far away. She wanted to follow those voices.

Comatose patient.

I'm sorry.

We're not sure when she'll wake up.

Words that she knew were supposed to make sense.

Wake up soon

He came back today; I know you would have liked to have been there

You gotta wake up…

Please

She recognized the voice.

The voice reminded her of the lights.

Lantern lights this time.

A festival, maybe?

Yes that was right. It was a summer festival. The fireworks were going to come soon.

He was so excited for them. But who was he? His face was blurred, like it wasn't really there. Like she didn't want to remember just yet.

She was walking down a street filled with vendors, someone was following her. She knew someone was following her.

She turned down another street, something hit her.

She was on the ground, she was bleeding.

"It's going to be okay!"

It was his voice.

She had wanted to watch the fireworks with him.

The lights exploded in the sky, bursts of colors in the darkness.

She didn't want to be hurt.

Things were going black.

The fireworks.

The lanterns.

She could remember lights.

She could remember him.

She needed to wake up.

She wasn't floating anymore. She was running now, she was running for the light.

And then it wasn't dark.

She was in a bed. Her eyes were closed but she could hear the whir of the machine that she was hooked up to, and the steady beep that measured her heart rate.

He was there, his hand holding hers.

With all the strength she had left in her; she gently squeezed his hand.

Naruto.

"Sakura?"

Yes. Sakura Haruno, could remember lights.

Because even in the darkness Naruto Uzumaki was always there.
