Author's Note: This story was written for SweetestIrony's Gohan/Videl week 3.0. The starter sentence was "'Man,' s/he said. 'If I had a zenni for every time that happened, I'd be...'".
It was in Classroom 202 of Orange Star High, and class had just finished. A nervous boy named Marker was talking with Videl, building up to a question which had been thinking about for a few days. Gohan stood nearby.
Marker ran a hand through his hair. "So, I was thinking, if you didn't have a date for the dance, maybe you'd like to...go with me?"
Videl gave Marker an icy stare and took a protective step to the left, towards Gohan. "You know Gohan's my boyfriend, right?"
"Wha-what?" Marker said. "You...two..."
"We've been going out for the past three months," Videl said, wrapping her arm around Gohan's side.
"Wow," Marker said, totally shocked. "Sorry, dude, I didn't mean to ask out your girlfriend right in front of you! I just...I never thought you two would end up together!"
Marker walked away, shaking his head in disbelief over the horribly embarrassing situation he had just gotten into.
Gohan frowned.
"Man," he said. "If I had a zenni for every time that happened, I'd be richer than your dad," he said.
"Every time what happened?" Videl asked.
"Every time someone is surprised to hear we're dating," Gohan said. "Doesn't anyone think we're a good couple?"
"Oh, Gohan, it's not that," Videl said. "We're not a bad couple; we're just...not what people expect."
The two of them left the classroom together, and they continued talking as they went through the hall.
"You mean people don't expect a cool, pretty girl like you to end up with a nerd like me," Gohan said.
"Hey, don't get so down on yourself," Videl said. "That's not it!"
"Then, what is it? Why don't people expect us to be a couple?"
"Well...by all accounts, we should hate each other. After all, when we first met, I was obsessed with finding out your secrets."
"...And I should hate you because your dad took credit for beating Cell," Gohan said, finishing the thought.
"Right," Videl said. "That's why people are surprised to learn we're dating. You'd think we'd be worst enemies, not best friends."
"I guess it is ironic that we ended up together," Gohan agreed, smiling.
Videl squeezed his hand, happy to see he wasn't upset anymore.
"It's the sweetest irony..." she said.
