Unable to Close My Eyes
K.L.
The iridescent red of the alarm clock flashed 3:41AM.
It had been a little over six hours since the duo had climbed under the silk covers and only four since the lights had been turned off; conversation losing to the yearn for sleep.
However, one set of eyes remained open; the minutes that passed held no reprieve. Sleep would not come. It never did.
The moon hovered high in the sky, spilling through the open window illuminating the world within.
On the bed rest two figures. One, with her locks splayed out across the pillow, seemed to rest comfortably a small smile creasing her lips. The other however lay on her side, propped up by one arm and using that palm as a cradle for her head. Moonlight bathed both bodies revealing much of the surroundings and in particular a pair of emerald eyes.
Tenderly, the woman would merely gaze at the resting figure. Never once did her gaze leave. Never once did they lose their shimmer. Never once did they droop.
It was not a lack of need for rest that drove the woman to her awakened state. No, that wasn't it. Then what? What could drive one to the brink of alert attentiveness when all the body craved was deep slumber?
Love.
Yes, love. An emotion that drives even the most sane to insanity; that fuels war; induces isolation… It is an emotion entangled in the tapestry of our existence.
For you see it is Fate that brings these two lovers together and Love that keeps them so. But on occasion Fate will drive them apart, playing a cruel trick on the fragile hearts of the beholders.
So it is when they are reunited, when all in the world rights itself, that the young emerald eyed woman finds herself unable to sleep... Ultimately it is fear that drives her to such an extreme no matter how much her body may plea… Fear is the winner. It always is.
As the night turns to morning, she will find no rest. For if she should close her eyes, for but an instant too long all that she has before her… may slip away. Into the darkness, it will take her love, take her far away. To a place where they are no longer together; in a world detached from this…
Fear; crueller than Fate. For though Fate will separate them, it will only be for but an instance in the span of their life. Fear… fear will never leave. It will bury deep in your heart and play with the raw emotions that rest there. It will not let you rest. For the moment in which you close your eyes it will attack without mercy; without relent. It will amplify the feeling of being alone… without her…
Yes… it is fear that will keep her awake; the fear of losing everything she holds dear…
