Summary Kirk and Spock's first brief meeting at the academy leaves Spock making value judgments.
Warning(s) None
Notes I was thinking last night that Spock and Kirk sure had an easy time reconciling in the latest movie, and it got me thinking about touch telepathy, emotional states, and how Kirk might be perceived if he's open to a person (or Vulcan). Kirk's AOS character is rather dark and perhaps that is part of why Spock was so unreceptive since it seems to be fanon that Kirk's emotional state is very intense and suffocating even when completely positive. I wanted to make this fic bigger and more encompassing, but it didn't feel like it, so this short scene is what it is.

Before There Is a Place to Belong

It was illogical to place a value judgment upon he whom Spock had not formally met. Although that would be conceding the emotion behind any value judgment and thus would not have a structure of logic. Yet, deep within himself, Spock could not help but dislike Cadet James Kirk instantly. What complicated this instantaneous assessment was that it was completely based upon emotionality, yet not from Spock, but from Kirk.

"You okay?"

The question brought Spock back from his musings. The young professor had just walked headlong into Kirk when both rounded a corner. His mind still reeled from the intensity of the emotions Kirk had inadvertently transferred in their contact. "I am as I should be," Spock stated, managing to sidestep Kirk's hand reaching to steady him.

"Well if 'as you should be' is looking like some deer in the headlights, you're doing a great job," Kirk commented. He dropped his hand when Spock moved away, his eyebrows pulling together.

"I am required at the atmospheric lecture," Spock stated firmly. Now that he was out of Kirk's touch, his control was righting everything that went wrong in their brief contact. He swiftly headed in the correct direction without sparing a look back at the underclassman standing in the hallway. Cadet Kirk was darkness, not completely but enough that Spock could almost sense the tendrils of it encircling his throat. There was sadness, guilt, pain, a rushing flood of all that was negative overshadowing what kindness and caring might be lurking underneath. The most alarming part of the brief contact they had when their fingers brushed briefly was the cadet's intensity. Even the smallest emotion Kirk held in that instant was suffocating. Spock took a silent, deep breath and entered the lecture hall.
