He opens the door all the way and steps out into the hall.

"Why are you here? Aren't you supposed to be out trolling around bars with your new roommate?"

"No. I'm not supposed to be."

He makes a face. He had overheard her in the break room telling one of the secretaries about her plans.

"Are you drunk?" He asks.

"A little," she says, taking a step closer to him.

"Why are you here?" He repeats, unaware that he's leaned in towards her.

She stares over his shoulder, back into his empty apartment. She doesn't meet his eyes as she whispers "You must think I'm cold."

He doesn't deny it. He doesn't think to pass it off as a comment about the weather. Instead, he takes her hand and she pulls his head down and kisses him. He lets her. He encourages her.

Later, sprawled on his bed, he cannot make sense of what's happened.

"Peggy?" He says quietly. He is not sure if she is awake. He is not sure if he wants her to be. "Are you staying? Because you can, if you want." He doesn't know if he means tonight or indefinitely.

She is awake. She lifts herself up on her elbow, her hand still on his chest. And then she stares. She is just still and quiet and she won't look away. He doesn't know what to do. He's no good at this.

As she looks at him, he realizes he meant indefinitely. He meant 'don't leave me alone again.' He meant 'I need you. Fix Me. Fix all of this.' Worse, he thinks, she knows he meant all of these things too. He disgusts himself.

"I'm sorry, Pete," she finally says.

He is horrified to feel his face crumple. She's leaving, he thinks. Again. He stares at her, his eyes wide and his heart racing, and hears her voice in his head "I had your baby…I had your baby…I had your baby and I--"

And then she is kissing him. Her body is pressed against his and her hand runs up his chest to rest against his cheek. She pulls away and leans her forehead against his.

Suddenly, he is sure that she didn't mean "I don't want to stay" or "I can't stay." She is talking about before. About last time. About it. The child.

"I know I did everything wrong," he tells her. Up until now, he hadn't felt that way. But being here with her now, he knows it's true.

She smiles shyly at him, the way she used to smile, and lays her head back down on his chest. He takes a deep breath and runs his hand absently up and down her back.

She stays. Indefinitely.
