Luna stood on her tiptoes trying to reach a dusty, old tome on the top shelf in the library. Draco was walking down the aisle when he spotted her. His heart jumped once as she tilted the stool, which was balancing precariously on a chair, forward slightly to get a better angle. Draco took a deep breath telling him self it was only Loony Lovegood, and she was probably strange enough that nothing bad would ever happen to her.

For a moment Draco considered walking on by, but then he decided to stay and watch to see what was going to happen. Nonchalantly, he leaned against the end of the bookshelf opposite her, just out of her line of sight, as he watched her. As he relaxed, he heard Luna humming a tune. As he strained his ears, he began to recognize the song. It had a light, slow melody, and although Luna sang every other note off-key, perhaps on purpose, it was a lovely, little tune. Despite his resolve to show disgust to everyone that did not meet his high standards, Draco felt himself being drawn into the music. It was driving him mad; he just knew that he recognized that song.

All at once, it hit him. It was a lullaby. His mother must have sung it to him when he was, no, it couldn't have been his mother. Could it have been— no! This was not the time for stupid, sentimental memories. How dare that idiotic girl sing that song!? Furious, Draco shouted at the girl, "Stop humming, Loony!"

Surprised, Luna teetered for a bit on the stool on the chair, but she regained her balance and turned toward him. Her mouth opened in an O of surprise, but then the corners drooped down before she said, "Hello, Draco. You're not supposed to yell in the library."

Draco strode toward her and looked up at the girl. "I do not care! Stop that noise."

Luna furrowed her brow, "But I have stopped. You don't like it?"

Swallowing, Draco shook his head, "It's a stupid song. Not that it matters, but you shouldn't be humming in the library. I was, uh... studying and you distracted me."

With a half smile, Luna apologized, "I'm sorry to have bothered you." Carefully, she turned back to the bookshelf and reached again for the elusive book. Draco became aware of just how close he was standing to the strange girl. Her shoes were at shoulder height, and he slowly looked up her legs. He stopped a few inches past her knee-length skirt and swallowed. Draco was shocked to realize that Luna had attractive, if a bit thin, legs. His face reddened as Luna looked down at him, book finally in hand. Without thought, he reached up to her and helped her out of her tower.

Luna hopped to the ground and quickly released him. Head tilted, she looked up at him, bemused. "Thanks."

Indifferent, Draco shrugged and tried not to watch her as she walked quickly away. He cleared his throat and wondered what on earth had come over him. Being kind to Loony was not appropriate; no matter how attractive of... anyway, there was no use in pursuing that train of thought.

Still, he could not help but feel a tinge of annoyance with himself. After all, what was the ultimate use in pushing everyone away? Perhaps, one day, he would ask her to finish that song.
