Tears of a Jedi
By Angel Kamiya
It was almost time for Qui-Gon Jinn's funeral and Anakin was trying to find out why Obi-Wan Kenobi wasn't there yet. After Obi-Wan had been made a Jedi Knight by the Jedi Council, the young man had left to walk through the Theed royal palace on his own. They hadn't been able to talk for hours now. Everyone that worked in the Palace had been so busy preparing for the celebration that they didn't get the chance. Anakin was still having a hard time believing that Qui-Gon Jinn was really gone.
Anakin walked through the palace. The boy had lived a very simple life as a slave so being inside such a grand palace overwhelmed him. Naboo was so different from Tatooine. There were still a few guards stationed at palace, but almost everyone was outside getting ready for the parade. The guards nodded at the boy and let him travel uninterrupted because Queen Amidala had told them that he was a special guest. Anakin smiled when he realized that he would be able to spend some more time with Padme later that day.
When Anakin finally found Obi-Wan, he froze. The man was leaning against the wall with his arms folded across his chest. The Jedi standing there looked the same but there was something different about him. Obi-Wan was wearing his brown cloak and had his hood down covering his face. It looked like he wanted to hide from the galaxy.
"Master Obi-Wan?" The boy asked, worriedly. "We have to go now. The funeral is about to start."
Anakin was surprised when the Jedi Knight didn't respond. It was like Obi-Wan hadn't even heard him. Anakin didn't know what he was going to do.
"Master Obi-Wan?" Anakin repeated, in a small voice. "What's the matter?"
"Qui-Gon is gone. He is really gone," Obi-Wan whispered, still not looking up.
Anakin stared at the man and was amazed when he saw that there were tears in his eyes. This was something that surprised him. Anakin had never believed that Jedi cried. In all the stories that he had heard about them, they had simply been unstoppable warriors that showed no emotions. That hadn't been true.
Obi-Wan was crying.
The Jedi were people too. They was just better at keeping their feelings hidden from all those around them. Anakin was so overwhelmed by this new knowledge that he was unable to say anything for some time.
"I'm sorry," Anakin said, staring down at the ground.
The two of them stood there silently for what felt like an eternity. The only sounds came from the celebration taking place outside the palace. Anakin didn't know how he could help Obi-Wan. They had only known each other for a short time and the only reason they were together was because of Qui-Gon. It was obvious that Obi-Wan had wanted to be left alone. Anakin wondered if the man was angry at being disturbed.
"I always thought he would be there when I was made a Knight."
"I know that Master Qui-Gon would have been proud of you," Anakin said, knowing what he was saying was completely true.
"Thank you," Obi-Wan smiled, realizing that it was time to leave. "We better get going. They are waiting for us."
Obi-Wan placed a hand on Anakin's shoulder and they walked through the hallway of the Palace. They left together. Speaking with the boy made him feel a little better, and now he was ready to see his old master one last time. They went to see Qui-Gon Jinn's body be burned and become one with The Force.
